More Dense, Better Home Viewing
on July 9, 2017

I have seen all the Dan Brown movies and enjoyed them all. 'Inferno' is the most difficult viewing, with a very complicated plot and an unreliable narrator. The movie almost veers into horror territory in the first half, and Tom Hanks' character takes quite a beating. The plot really requires more than one viewing to enjoy, the first time to enjoy the twists and the second to see the intricacies involved. While perhaps not quite up to the level of "Da Vinci Code', this is still infinitely smarter than 99% of the movies coming out today. It's great to see a character who isn't a superman but still a hero. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A Protest Album, Of Sorts
on July 9, 2017

Gov't Mule has been around over 20 years and weathered all kinds of changes, but at heart they are still a meaty hard rock band, a bit of a throw back to the 1970s. Warren Haynes always like to do thinks a little differently, so this time it is a political protest, but along the lines of, "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.". There is a widening of the stylistic pallet this time, and with the passing of Butch Trucks and Greg Allman, Gov't Mule finally wanders into Allman Brothers / Grateful Dead territory with 'Traveling Tune' and soul with 'Sarah, Surrender'. The highlights are 'Revolution Come... Revolution Go ' with it's style changes and a very Zeppelin-esque 'Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground,. Overall, a great addition to a very rich discography.

Affectionate Look at the End of a Touring Band
on December 17, 2016

Rush toiled in the field of rock for nearly fouty years before gaining respect and it has finally caught up to the band. This documentary beautifully captures a band at the end of their road life, aged veterans admitting their frailty. It is not a concert film, but examines the band, roadies, managers as well as the rabid Rush fan base that has sustained the Canadian trio all this time.
Bitter sweet is the best description I can come up with. These three guys kept plugging away against all odds, not being cool until thier very unhipness became cool a few years ago. But Rush sets the bar very high, a hard rock trio playing three hours a night at the very top of thier skills. This film announces the end of that era.
We get to see the back stage drama as the band's last mammoth tour crossed the continent and the emotions begin to surge, both in the band and with the fans. Each member of the group gets to state thier case, and it is no surprise that Neil Peart is the one pulling the plug. An intensely private man who has suffered upspeakable tragedy and managed to overcome the devistating loss of his family, he also drums at a world class level. Neil has decided to go out on top instead of accepting diminishing returns.
This is a companion piece to the excellent "Beyond the Lighted Stage' and the technical aspects are excellent. As a bonus, around an hour of older concert footage from the 1990s is included. Overall, it is hard not to get emotional saying goodbye to old frineds, but they did it right - as they always did.

A Specific Look at a Specific Time
on December 17, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
The latest Beatles documentary looks at a very specific time, from right before they invaded America until they stopped touring (and a little beyond, actually). While familiar, it does cover some new ground. Concentrating on the spiraling media circus surrounding the Beatles phenomenon, it does a good job of showing how it became less fun over time, starting out great and turning first into a chore and then a dangerous situation.
Technically, film and video was gathered from all over the world for this documentary and it is an impressive achievement, aged media looking and sounding good in the Blu Ray age. This story has been told before but not this concise, and hearing from people outside the Beatles camp - reporters, spectators, and even roadies - was perhaps the best part.
The two disc version has some really nice special features on the second disc for a change. The original documentary must have been longer in scope, because there is a lot of material about the early Liverpool days of the band not covered in the main film. Besides five complete song performances there are a few other expanded short documentaries that were very nice, and the total time of the documentary is nearly double.
Overall, a worthy purchase, but really aimed at the older nostalgia age group or casual Beatle fan.

A Sampler of Space Rock
on December 11, 2016

For those unable to fork over $571, Pink Floyd offers this sampler from the 28 disc 'The Early Years' set. It is the strange psychedelic music that one would expect, but the choices are a bit odd. While there is a bit of unreleased Syd Barrett, neither of the two legendary songs slated for his last single with the band, 'Vegetable Man' or 'Scream Thy Last Scream', are included, which is a shame since they need to be heard to be believed. Otherwise there few BBC cuts but a few soundtrack outtakes and remixes, and some long or live cuts firmly in the space rock tradition of early Floyd. But they will make you pay full price for the good stuff. Still a nice collection, but not essential.

Breaking New Ground Doing the Same Old Stuff
on December 11, 2016

'Havana Moon', musically, is as close to a greatest hits package as the Rolling Stones have ever produced. What makes it special is the location: the first ever rock concert in Cuba in front of over a million people. While a free event without the merchandizing and other activities that have become standardized at rock concerts, the set list mostly sticks to the big hits. When you are the Rolling Stones, that's not necessarily a bad thing. The Stones bulldoze there way through two hours of dance friendly classics, with only a few deep cuts like 'Midnight Rambler'. For the casual fan, this is a terrific set, but for the die hard, you've heard all this before. But it is still very good, and some day the Stones won't be around. Then this set will be iconic.

Vastly Improved

I'm old enough to remember both the Beatles and when this album came out originally in 1977. Then it was anything but essential, a shriek-covered aural mess not worth the bother. But technology has peeled away the audience to reveal the great band playing underneath. You can really near the bass and drums for the first time. The Beatles are a tight band, storming through their sets in top form. Now, cleaned up, it does become essential, the only true document of the touring band that stopped in 1966.

Sleeper of the Summer

This movie crept in and out of the theaters without much notice, but it is not to be missed. A deliberate throwback to the buddy action comedies of the 1980, this one tops them all with a funny perspective on 1977 and some great comedy stylings from Ryan Gosling. I never realized that Gosling could be so funny and frumpy and he is great, but he is topped by the actress playing his daughter, Angourie Rice. Russell Crowe plays straight man here, and he does the job well, plus a colorful assortment of bad guys to keep things moving. Great action set pieces and wonderful Los Angeles locations make this a must-see movie.

This action-adventure chronicles the escapades of a swashbuckling and brutal pirate, Captain Flint (Toby Stephens), his shipmates and his rivals in the early 18th-century Caribbean. The series is a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island," and is set 20 years before the events depicted in that literary classic. While bounding the Spanish Main and jolly-rogering across the seas, Flint accepts a young recruit, John Silver (Luke Arnold), to join his crew, while later quashing a mutiny, questing for treasures, broadsiding other pirate vessels and exchanging fire with the ships of the British Navy who have been charged with blowing Flint out of the water.

My New Favorite

Maybe I am a sucker for pirates, but I really like this series. The production values are superb and the gratuitous elements effectively shocking. Each episode in the series gets better because no alliance is permanent and the characters are always evolving. The scripting in this series is fantastic, as is the acting. There are no true heroes but the material is close to historically accurate - closer than Hollywood usually gets, anyway. By the time you get to the end of the last episode, things are completely turned around is the most unexpected ways.
If you are looking for an unpredictable action series, you can't do better than this!

This box set release compiles all four entries of the Jason Bourne film series. Matt Damon starred as the amnesiac special agent in The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum, while Jeremy Renner took the lead role of Aaron Cross in The Bourne Legacy. This collector's edition features a bonus disc with special features, including a look at the upcoming fifth film in the series, and the return of Damon, 2016's Jason Bourne.

Great Series Plus Nice Bonus
on September 18, 2016

This steel book has the first Bourne movies together with a bonus disc of special features in a very nice package. The bonus disc are about an hour of extra special features, mostly highlighting the incredible special effects needed to go into the chase scenes in the movies, and I enjoyed them. As for the movies, the Bourne series is uniformly excellent.
The first movie seems very European. Matt Damon makes a great reluctant hero and Franka Polenta is fabulous as the woman dragged into his situation. The second movie enlarges the scope, moving away from the intimate mayhem into more large scale set pieces. The ending sting in New York City feels shocking because the viewer has been in Europe so long. The third film is somewhat frustrating, as the first hour is about keeping Jason Bourne away from NYC, but when he finally gets there, the action goes epic.
The joker in the pack is 'Bourne Legacy', which received mediocre reviews. Not as many people have seen this one, and it is a shame. Not only does Jeremy Renner make a great hero but Rachel Weisz is superb as the female lead. I think it ranks up there with the other Bourne film as well as doing other things unique to this film, especially in showing the horrors of a drone strike. Don't overlook this one!
