Did Wes Anderson come from a dysfunctional environment as a child? It might explain why all of his characters come from dysfunctional families or are socially awkward. I'm not complaining though. It's these quirks that make his films so unique and enjoyable. While The Darjeeling Limited isn't as good as Bottle Rocket, Rushmore or The Royal Tennenbaums it is still a pretty good movie with great music. If you haven't seen it yet i would recommend renting it and watching it before you decide you'd like to buy it.
What's great about it: Like most Wes Anderson movies, it's great to look at
What's not so great: Not as good as his earlier movies
For those unfamiliar with the Kinks, you should really familiarize yourself with them, and this is a great way to do it. The Kinks are usually sited by rock bands when asked who their favorite bands are and for good reason. This is one of the most versatile rock bands in history and this collection gives a good idea of their wide variety of sounds. The only problem is that it, like most other Kinks collections, it doesn't include one of my favorite Kinks songs: Nothing in This World Can Stop Me Worrying About That Girl. If you find that song on a collection, get that.
Most live albums are easy to compliment because they're usually just greatest hits albums, but there are a lot of so-so live albums out there. This isn't one of them. This one rocks from the beginning with the pounding beat of remote control. Forget the fact that Joe Strummer and Mick Jones mix up their words while playing live. If you're a Clash fan and you don't have From Here To Eternity, get it!
The greatest album from the greatest punk band in history. The Clash aren't just screaming and cursing, they actually have a message (usually) and if you aren't familiar with the Clash this is about as good an introduction as you can get. There is a 25th Anniversary special edition that came out a couple years ago with bonus tracks, and I would get that, but if you want the bare bones London Calling, go for it.
Serious Elvis Costello fans probably already own this album and know how great it is. This is arguably the best album by Elvis Costello and the attractions and could be the greatest album of the New Wave era of the late 70s and early 80s. If you already have a copy of This Year's Model, the $30 price tag might not be worth it, but the extra demo and live tracks are nice.
What's great about it: Great music, great lyrics, lots of extras
Rushmore is one of the greatest indie dark comedies ever produced and the collection of music that makes up the soundtrack really helped to make the movie what it is and give it a truly unique feel. Movie soundtracks don't usually get much better than this. It's obvious that when Wes Anderson imagined this movie he had Cat Stevens, and The Who, and The Faces in mind. Even the original tracks by Mark Mothersbaugh are great. The only problem with the soundtrack is that it's missing the song "Jersey Thursday" by Donovan which is in the film. Even if you haven't seen the movie buy the soundtrack.
Spiderman three was such a disappointment compared to the first two. Most of the plot was based upon a series of coincidences, the characters have no real motivation to do the things they do, and there are way too many cheesy moments and bits of dialogue. The disc is good for watching how they made the effects (which also weren't that great) but I wouldn't recommend it.
What's great about it: Some good extras
What's not so great: Campy writing and a plot full of holes
I saw the Police play in St. Louis and watching this is almost as good as seeing them live. The DVDs and CDs are all great. If you didn't get a chance to see them on this tour, get this and enjoy it any time you want. Plus, it's half the price of the cheapest ticket to the show! What more could you ask?
Overall Iron Man is a great movie. The only problem with it is the climactic scene. The big battle at the end sounds like it was written by a fifth grader. It goes from being a smart funny movie to one with campy dialogue in a mediocre final battle. But the disc and features are great.
What's great about it: Smart, funny superhero movie with great extras.
For all of the Elvis Costello fans out there, if you've never heard the Juliet Letters you should get it. I would think the only E.C. fans who wouldn't like this would be people who absolutely hate classical music, but if you like Elvis you already show you have great taste. The DVD is great because after years of listening to the CD I could finally watch it as it happened. It's a brilliant collection of songs and I highly recommend it for anyone who loves great music.
