Pixar rarely makes any missteps, and Inside Out is no exception. It's another animated masterpiece from the studio that already brought us wonderful films like Up, Wall-E and The Incredibles. This imagines a fantasy world of emotions as characters inside the head of a 11-year old girl named Riley. This fantasy world is very fully realized conceptually and ii is a wonder to behold how things as complex as human emotions can be explained away with cartoon characters and situations. Very clever, fun and emotional.

Alice falls down the rabbit hole and an incredible adventure begins that takes her through Wonderland where she meets iconic characters like the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the Caterpillar, The Queen of Hearts, Tweedle-Dee & Tweedle-Dum, the March Hare, and of course, the Mad Hatter. A must-see for anyone that enjoys classic animation films.

Interstellar is a personal movie about family guised in the tropes of science fiction. It features superb actors giving great performances in a story that reminds us how important it is to look up at the stars and imagine the possibilities. A must-watch.

This film is a must-see for all cinephiles. It takes one actor’s fight for relevancy in today’s world and turns it into a perfectly flowing, wonderfully orchestrated and expertly acted film. Much has been made about the tricks of cinematography that were used to make it look like the entire film is shot in“one-take”, but I felt that it was effectively used here to make the film feel more like a stage production, which heightened the drama. Amazing cast… Michael Keaton and Edward Norton in particular were amazing, as were Naomi Watts, Emma Stone and Zach Galifianakis. Watching the rehearsals and the behind the scenes stuff in the bonus features, really made you realize how perfectly orchestrated everything had to be for the film to work and it drove home how much of a high-wire act it was for the actors and crew. But beyond the mechanics of the movie, it tells a great story that is equal parts twisted drama, dark comedy and fantasy. It just won Best Picture and it’s hard to argue against that win based on the merits of this film. Bravo.

This is a very personal film, made by Richard Linklater, about the universal experience of growing up in modern America. Shot over 12 years in small vignettes every year to illustrate the ups and downs of being a boy at different points in the life of the main character. We as viewers get to see his loving but separated nuclear family grow up along with him along with some other tertiary characters. It all somehow comes together into a cohesive and moving film that isn't about anything in particular but becomes a study in life.

David Fincher does not disappoint his fans... this is a smart thriller about the fact that you may not know exactly what is going on the head of your spouse, as well as a scathing satire about how media can sensationalize a news story and turn it into a 24-hour circus. The actors are great, especially Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, who are perfectly cast in their roles. There is of course a twist in the story and the film changes tone about halfway in, but the joy of this film is how it changes from a pretty standard procedural into something fresh and new.

First off, Billy Corgan is an amazing songwriter and rock frontman, but without the other members of the original Pumpkins lineup, he's just Billy Corgan. Which is not a bad thing, but it's also not a great thing. This album is an entertaining listen, and it's very short - the nine songs flew by and I was halfway through the second listen before I realized that I was hearing repeated songs. For a completionist like myself, it's a must-have album, but I imagine that for most people, they would be better off just listening to the albums from the '90s again.

Guardians of the Galaxy comes from an obscure Marvel property, but it has definitely come into the mainstream with this blockbuster that is on most "best of 2014" lists. It has a ragtag group of characters that are brought together by circumstances that force them to become better people and act as a team to save... you know, the galaxy. A great message wrapped in a fast-paced plot and colorful special effects.

As a Zach Braff fan, I waited a long time for a follow-up to Garden State. But this movie is nowhere as good as his previous film. It's not bad, it's just not great. I did enjoy seeing his unique sense of humor in small throw-away scenes like when he sees an empty pamphlet holder in a hospital waiting room with the label, "This pamphlet will save your life." And his cast is pretty phenomenal, especially the young Joey King who hits every emotional scene with a punch. For Scrubs fans, there is a too short scene with Donald Faison as well.
