Great Gaming Keyboard
on August 27, 2019
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
The Logitech G815 is a very nice and satisfying keyboard to own. Out of the box, it's aluminum finish top feels very substantive. While the bottom half of the keyboard is made of plastic, the entire thing still has some weight to it which is kind of a nice thing. Being a wired keyboard, it's not expected that you'll be running around your living room with it, but that it will sit somewhere fairly regularly.
For performance, this wired keyboard performs as expected and on par with other wired gaming keyboards. This keyboard comes with 4 macro settings and 5 programmable keys. The Logitech G Hub software allows you to set pre-programmable settings based on program so you don't even have to pick a macro setting. It will automatically activate based on the program that opens. Another nice function is that this keyboard will deactivate keys that you determine if you desire should they be problematic during game play (think the windows key).
The keyboard RGB lighting is fully programmable per key which is not particularly unusual for a high end gaming keyboard, but is still very enjoyable to experience. Another great feature is the volume scroll wheel which is a bit large for my taste, but some may find this an added benefit. It's more like a scroll log than a scroll wheel, but it serves as a nice way to quickly adjust the volume. Finally, the keyboard comes with an added USB port which can be plugged directly into your keyboard. The keyboard USB cable splits at the PC end which is where the two accessories separate.
In conclusion, the Logitech G815 is an excellent keyboard for gaming. It does come with a high price tag which may deter some buyers, but for those who are serious about gaming and value the quality and precision of their keyboard, it won't.
Pros:
-Quality build
-Aluminum top
-Customizable gaming keys and macros
-Key travel (long) and responsiveness
-USB connection directly from keyboard
Cons:
-Price
-No built in wrist rest

Good Athletic Headphones
on August 13, 2019
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
The JLab Epic Air Sport True Wireless headphones are a pretty good option if you're in the market for a true wireless headphone--whether for athletic use or not.
Build quality is nice, but not exceptional. That said, they still feel sturdy and like they can hang with you for years of use. Some may find the charging case a little large, but I find that it is nicely built and big enough to not be easily lost, but big enough to provide some very nice added benefits that I'll discuss in a moment.
Fit, feel, and comfort of these headphones is pretty good. Ideally, prefer a straight earbud without a hook, but the hook does add an extra element of security so these buds aren't going anywhere. JLab has also gone above and beyond in providing six silicone gel tips and one cloud foam tip to help you find the perfect fit.
Battery life is exceptional for these headphones. The headphones themselves are rated at 10+ hours at medium volume. I have been able to get about 10-14 during a typical workday which can include pauses. However, the biggest plus is that the charging case (that some may consider larger than necessary) can supply an additional 60+ hours of charge to the headphones! That's awesome! What could be better than that you might ask? That the charging/carrying case itself serves as a separate battery pack that can charge another device! To me, that is a huge bonus. Keep in mind that your headphones require a lot less juice than your phone, but this will definitely give you an extra 25-40% on your phone charge.
The controls on these headphones are pretty useful. They just take some getting used to. So you'll have to read and train yourself how many taps to which earbud it takes to do what you want.
As far as sound (because these are headphones right?!), I find them to be above average but not stellar. They come with three pre-set EQs (balanced, bass boost, and JLab signature). I found that the signature was the best in terms of good lows, mids, and highs without distortion. The bass boost required additional volume to bring out those highs. The sound is good, just nothing that blows me away.
In conclusion, these are some good headphones at an average price point but with some impressive features--especially considering the charging case that essentially services as a backup battery pack for all your devices.

A Must Have
on August 7, 2019
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
The Nextbase 322GW dash cam is really a must have if you drive anywhere regularly. For less than $200, this camera can provide a great deal of peace of mind for you or a family member. Even though this camera isn't the top of the line model, it still features 140 degree 1080p resolution and a really nice suite of features via the app/computer software.
Out of the box, the Nextbase 322GW is smaller than my cell phone and comes with a nice suction or adhesive mount and plenty of 12v adapter wiring to run from the source under/around the dash, up the A pillar and under the roof trim to the rear view mirror which I think is the ideal location to keep the camera discreetly located while still being accessible.
By connecting your phone to the camera or directly via the VERY MUCH appreciated touch screen display, you can adjust the settings on the camera. You can change the video clip length (1, 2, or 3 min), resolution, frames per second, etc. As with most cameras, once the memory is full, the oldest video is overwritten. What I love about the Nextbase 322GW is that it has an automatic (if selected) option where certain G-forces/shocks can trigger a file to be protected. There is also a button on the camera where you can manually protect a file or take a snapshot picture.
With the default 1080p and 60 frames per second setting, you will get the best quality. I found this to be more than sufficient for everyday commuting uses. In fact, I think the 30 fps would do just as well. That being said, your settings should reflect your available storage and individual preferences with regard to how long you want/need the video saved. You're going to burn about .5 GB for ever 3 minutes of 60fps 1080p video collected. One major downside of this camera is that it doesn't include a SD video card. As cheap as these cards are, it really would've been a positive if one was included rather than forcing buyers to likely get home and then run back out or order a storage card. They could've built this into the price and I don't think it would've turned anyone off. If you have a 30 minute commute, that's 10GB for a round-trip commute. For me, I'm comfortable with the 32GB card that Nextbase provided to aid me in this review. If an accident happens, I'll most definitely save the video or it will automatically be protected so I'm not sure why I would want older videos when no incident occurred. The parking mode feature that is included with this camera could be a benefit. It operates on the built-in battery and automatically activates when the camera senses any kind of shock/vibration. While this initially interested me, I'm not sure how useful it is. My testing showed that even a loud rumble from a passing vehicle/truck can trigger the recording. At 1 minute each, it can quickly eat up storage. In addition, it only records after a vibration/shock. Unless someone hits you from the direction of the camera, you won't see anything. Even then, you would only see the vehicle/person leaving so you're not ever likely to catch someone with this feature or at least with any usable evidence.
In conclusion, I think every responsible person should have one of these cameras...In fact, they should be mandatory in vehicles on all four sides. Think about how many traffic incidents that it would resolve. For this specific camera, I can't recommend it enough. Once viewing on your computer (which you would likely do for court/insurance), the software overlays lots of metadata (Speed, GPS coordinates, direction, map, g-force, etc) which is extremely helpful. Driving with this piece of very very reasonably priced equipment would give me so much peace of mind and proof that I would not otherwise be able to have.
Pros:
-Price
-Video quality
-Features
-Meta data overlay
-Size
Cons:
-Setup

Great Indoor Antenna
on July 17, 2019
Posted by: abl001

The RCA Indoor Flat Amplified HDTV antenna is a great option for those looking to cut the cable. However, it's a very good idea to use the RCA Antenna Finder (https://www.rcaantennas.net/channels/) to make sure this antenna is right for you. Those living in extremely hilly terrain or far away from the broadcast towers may not be able to receive all the signals they expect.
The RCA Antenna came nicely packaged and is about 9h"x8.5w"x0.5d." It feels sturdy and substantial. I also like that this antenna is designed to lay flat rather than be stood up or mounted somewhere. That makes it easy to lay on top of a TV stand, DVD/BluRay player, etc so that it blends in with your decor.
I first tried this antenna in my office/extra bedroom since it is somewhere I don't want to pay for an extra cable connection, but still want the convenience of TV. This room is in the interior of my apartment and I received all of the major networks clearly although there was occasional interference from the CBS stations. I do live in an urban area, but the towers are all outside of the city and on the far side of town from me so none of my signals show in the "Green" from the RCA signal finder site. Even then, most were crystal clear at all times and even with some heavy downpours.
I would highly recommend this product for anyone looking to cut the cables or as an option to add TV service to a room without the added cost of an additional box. I think most will find there are a ton of channels that they didn't know about with an interesting variety of programming. A benefit of this product is also that it is pretty cheap ($39.99) so even if it isn't perfect, it's still a one-time purchase that will give you FREE over the air TV. Whether it be for your primary use or for a spare bedroom, I think that's a bargain. Additionally, if it doesn't meet your needs, you can simply return it.
Pros:
*Design
*Cost
*Signal Reception
Cons:
*Isn't terribly powerful, so it won't likely work if you are 75mi away from the towers and in a hilly terrain.

Almost Awesome

I've test a lot of speakers. Some hit and many miss. Some seem more effort and thought was put into coming up with 'extra' features than refining and improving the actual core product. The Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 keeps things simple and compact while delivering enjoyable sound for personal entertainment or for a party.
The Wonderboom 2 is a little bigger than soda can which makes it compact enough to take anywhere. It'll fit in a backpack, a laptop bag, or even a loose pocket. It comes with a small strap which comes in handy to carry with one finger or hang (beach umbrella, boat, tent, etc.). I was impressed with the build quality of the Wonderboom 2 which is wrapped in a durable mesh speaker fabric on the sides while the top and bottom are capped with a rubberized plastic material. I thought the speaker felt durable enough to take some drops and be crammed into a tightly packed bag although I wouldn't want to go dropping it on concrete just to test that theory. It is also water and dust proof which I did test and it worked well in the bath and pool.
Obviously, if you're buying a speaker you are buying it to get decent sound. You'll definitely get that with the Wonderboom 2 and actually a little more. It's plenty of speaker to have at the pool, on the boat, or in the kitchen for a small house party. If you want a speaker to blast over 50 people or provide beats for a flotilla on the lake, look for something else. The Wonderboom 2 has impressive highs, mids, and lows, for a low/mid-range (price) speaker with similar portability. Again, it's not going to rattle your shelves with its bass, but it provides enough so that sounds have depth and there is no 'tinny' sound at all. The speaker does have an outdoor boost mode, which did boost the power of the speaker but I found it was at the loss of clarity--too much for my taste. Again, if you need it to be that loud, buy another Wonderboom 2 and link with this one to provide a more uniform and pleasant sound coverage or start with a more powerful speaker to begin with.
As far as features go, the ability to link multiple speakers is great. The outdoor boost is a little much and the decrease in sound quality was too noticeable to make it worth the added volume. As mentioned in the opening of this review, it seems like so many products these days have a companion app for added features or even to control basic functionality. While I don't necessarily mind an app, I've found so many to be poorly thought out and left behind just as soon as the next product hits the shelf. Thankfully, the Wonderboom 2 has no companion app. You can control the music (play, pause, next) from your phone or the speaker itself via the huge buttons. There's no microphone so no phone calls or smart assistant functionality here, but who's ever used that via their speaker anyway? One major miss here and the main reason I didn't give this $99 speaker 5 stars, is the lack or ambiguity of speaker battery level. Most of my other speakers show the speaker battery level when the phone is connected AND have some sort of voice alert when powering on or when low of the battery level. Granted, these voice alerts aren't too specific ("Battery level about 70%"), but they are better than greater than 50% charged and less than 50% charged which is sort of what the Wonderboom 2 gives you.... If you know how to interpret it's beeps. I guess they thought that was universal? I think it's a big miss. I don't care that the charging is still via micro USB. I've complained about it so much I think I've just been beaten into submission. Micro-USB it is.
In conclusion, the Wonderboom 2 is an awesome little speaker that is incredibly portable and with an impressive 12-13 hours battery life. This should be more than enough for a full day outside or to get you through any house party. If you need something compact and that gets the job done with minimal fuss, this is your speaker. At $99, you really can't beat it--especially if you're going to use it sporadically. If you're going to use it regularly, I think it's even more of a value.
Pros:
*Size
*Battery life
*Simplicity
*Sound
Cons:
*Battery charge indicator
*Outdoor mode sound quality loss

Good for Basic Gaming & Everyday Activities
on June 20, 2019
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
The Acer Nitro 5 Gaming Laptop is a solid entry level system that will meet the needs of most light to moderate gamers. Note that most serious gamers are going to be looking for a desktop OR will need a much higher end gaming laptop. The Nitro 5 does a good job of balancing portability and gaming capabilities without really excelling at either.
The Nitro comes nicely packaged in a solid black box with the laptop, power adapter, and this is the second time that an Acer laptop has come with a surprise! This time, a neoprene case was included which was a thoughtful addition even though I prefer more storage space and will use my own case. It's a small thing, but I give Acer props for including it.
Build quality is nice, but not the best I've seen. It definitely looks like a gaming laptop with sharp angular designs and red accents. The lid has a black brushed plastic finish while other surfaces are a classic matte black finish. This is fine, but I would've preferred a pattern design or some other type of finish that would've made it look and feel a little more premium other than just on the outside. Something else to note is that my experience is the finish is a fingerprint/smudge magnet. One annoying design feature is the power cable placement right smack in the middle of the right side. This is odd and really annoying for me.
Performance wise, this laptop has a 2.4GHz quad-core latest generation (9th gen) Core i5 processor with 8 GB of RAM (expandable up to an impressive 32 GB) and a dedicated and less impressive NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 with just 3GB of memory. This particular card is at the very bottom of NVIDIAs GeForce series, but it is still capable of handling most of your AAA titles so long as you lower the graphics settings. There is also plenty of power to satisfy the needs of most users. Note that if you are a power/hardcore gamer, you will not be satisfied with this particular system. Acer has a wide range of Nitro 5s with varying specs. So if this system isn't quite enough for you, one of the others might be a better option. Personally, I'd recommend looking for a system with AT LEAST double the SSD storage. This model does have an spare m.2 slot so you can expand your onboard memory or just buy the system with the memory you know you're going to need up front.
This laptop, while being designated a 'gaming' laptop, will do all of the daily tasks that any other laptop will. Windows, web browsing, Office, etc. So this is a great option for a high school or college student. (Parents, this would be a great gift for that recent high school graduate heading off to college-especially at this price point!) It'll handle almost any game that you throw at it with good performance. It'll also pack up nicely and give your student an impressive laptop to take notes on in class. The battery life on this system isn't spectacular, but it will easily get you 5-6 hours with light use (non-gaming or graphics intensive).
In conclusion, the Acer Nitro 5 is a decent laptop that handles both everyday tasks as well as being capable of modest gaming so long as you can be content without maxing out the graphics settings. It's size makes it big enough to be enjoyable, but small enough to be easily stowed away in your backpack (or the included case!). So after you're done doing your homework, you can switch to gaming with your friends without any delay. I'd recommend this for anyone who doesn't want to drop a fortune on a custom gaming system, but wants the flexibility to enjoy modern games with their friends.
Pros:
*Size
*Design (with some caveats like the power cord placement)
*Price
*Performance (based on price)
Cons:
*Keyboard feels a bit soft
*Small SSD.

Great Protective Case & Keyboard
on June 18, 2019
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
The Logitech Slim Folio does not disappoint if you are looking for a quality and sturdy case to protect your beloved iPad. Before you even open the box, the Logitech Slim Folio will surprise you at its weight. I was pretty surprised since I have had several other cases and they are usually pretty lightweight. Not the case with the Slim Folio. I'd estimate it 75% heavier than similar cases/keyboards. Out of the box, the Logitech Slim Folio has the feel of a high quality case and keyboard. The material is solid with a nice smooth texture. I found it easy to connect to my iPad and it felt very secure. Due to the added weight, it really does feel more like a laptop than an iPad, BUT that also adds to the feeling that your precious iPad is safe and secure.
Connecting was as easy as with most other bluetooth connections so there isn't a lot to say about that. Once connected, I found using the Slim Folio to be a breeze and quite pleasant. The keys felt like they had substance with enough travel to give me a satisfying sensation of using a real keyboard. What is really nice and not found on all keyboards (even laptops which is just unbelievable) is that this keyboard comes with backlit keys! This may not seem like a big deal until you are using a keyboard without a backlit keyboard and then you'll soon wonder why anyone would ever build a keyboard without it! This keyboard/case has three different 'modes' like many of its competitors. The first is a traditional laptop mode with the iPad locked into a slightly titled position and the keyboard in front. This worked well and I enjoyed using the keyboard. The second is 'sketch mode' where the iPad lifts and covers the keyboard while remaining slightly tilted instead of flat/horizontal. Personally, I like this position for standard use of the iPad such as surfing, social media, chatting, and watching videos depending on your seating position. The third mode is 'read mode' where the keyboard flips behind the iPad and you are supposed to be able to hold it to read. I don't find this mode very usable since the case does add bulk to an already large iPad and handling it with one hand is not comfortable or feasible for any length of time.
In all, I would definitely recommend the Logitech Slim Folio Pro for anyone looking for a keyboard that will transform your iPad into something a lot closer to a functional laptop as well as providing a durable and stylish cover.
Logitech rates the case/keyboard to last 3 months on a single charge (via USB-C thankfully!) with an average of 2 hours of daily use. That's really quite impressive if it lives up to those expectations. For the purposes of this review, I cannot verify whether that is accurate but it is what they are claiming.
Pros:
-Durability
-Battery Life (advertised-not confirmed yet)
-Texture
-Cost compared to similar Apple products
-Backlit keyboard
Cons:
-Weight

Better Than Most Mounts
on June 12, 2019
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
I'm not generally a fan of phone mounts since my experience has been they are cheaply made and depending on where you live and the driving conditions, they just don't last. The iOttie iTap 2 Magnetic Dash & Windshield Mount has change my opinion on the quality issue.
Out of the box, you can just feel that the Ottie iTap 2 is better made than some of of the alternatives. It comes with a powerful suction cup for use on the windshield which requires no adhesives. If you want to mount the iTap 2 on your dash, you'll need to use the included adhesives to attach the mounting plate to your dash and then use the suction cup directly to the plate. I'm not a huge fan of using any kind of adhesives on my car so I only used the suction cup. Even in some mid 90s outside temps (inside the car probably closer to 110-115), the suction cup held firm.
To use the mount with your phone, you need to attach one of the included metal plates to the back of your phone. There is a smaller plate and a larger plate. The smaller plate should be sufficient for almost any phone, but particularly for those that utilize wireless charging as the plate can interfere with that capability. As I mentioned earlier, I'm not a fan of adhesives as they are a pain if you ever try to remove them. If you have a case that has enough room behind your phone, you can simply put the case on your phone over the metal plate. It fit fine in my Silk case and kept me from having to use adhesive on my beautiful phone.
The small magnet was sufficient to keep my phone in place in all but the worst bump on the crumbling streets of Memphis and that's saying a lot. Given that that these mounts are of more use to me on longer out of town drives where the roads aren't nearly as bad, I'm thoroughly impressed.
The mounting arm had good range of motion without being too loose. It looks and feels like a quality accessory in my car so I'm very pleased to use this and recommend to anyone looking for a nice mounting option.

Great Option for Wireless Charging
on June 8, 2019
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
I was a little hesitant regarding this product since it is from a third-party and this is my first venture into wireless charging. However, Belkin is a respected company and this product did not disappoint.
Out of the box, the Belkin Boost Up Wireless Charging dock looks nice and stylish and fits with the designs of the iPhone and apple watch. I was a little concerned about the angle that the iPhone has to be, but turns out, I actually enjoy having my phone sitting up as it makes it easier to check on alerts and silence alarms since you can see exactly where you are touching.
The power cord is flush with the bottom of the charging dock which is a nice touch. It really is a huge help to go from 3 cords winding around your nightstand or desk to 1. It doesn't save a tremendous amount of space, but consolidating all of your charging makes things a lot more tidy.
Even with a silk case for iPhone 8+, I had no problem getting my phone to charge. One concern was how secure the phone would be, but Belkin thought of this and there is a concaved/cut out area that allows the phone to rest securely without sliding off. The charging puck for the Apple Watch has strong enough magnets so that the watch is fully suspended while the bands rest on the base.
A surprise and added bonus of this charging dock is that there is a standard USB-A port on the back of the dock if you need to charge a third device! While it doesn't charge as fast as the wireless chargers (which are very fast!), it will still charge an iPad if you aren't in a hurry. I find it's best for other smaller devices like headphones for which it is more than adequate.
Overall, I highly recommend the Belkin Boost Up Wireless Charging Dock. It solves a problem and does it in style.

Good Solution for Non-Wireless Audio Sources
on May 27, 2019

The Twelve South AirFly Transmitter does exactly what it says it is supposed to do without any frills. This is kind of nice in a day when so many things throw in bells and whistles that are not executed well and sometimes you wonder why a company decided to include a 'feature' at all.
The AirFly Transmitter comes nicely packaged and the transmitter around the size of a key fob for your car. It is made of a quality hard plastic shell and comes with a soft fabric carrying pouch that will hold the transmitter, the micro USB cable, and the aux audio cable. It's small size and carrying pouch make it ideal to carry with me while traveling. In fact, it will fit inside my Sony WH-1000XM2 carrying case so that's one less thing I have to worry about accidentally leaving behind. Even though these headphones have the ability to connect directly via wires, it can get cumbersome when you have a tray table with food/drink, blanket, cell phone charging cable, etc. and you are trying to not accidentally yank cables out of their ports.
There were no lag issues that I noticed while on the plane. Volume was also fine on the two flights that I tested this on. However, I think this will also depend on the specific plane and In Flight Entertainment setup/equipment being used. When I tested this on my work desktop running Windows 10, it performed just as expected which allowed me to listen to YouTube videos or TV in the background while continuing my productivity. I found the audio quality to be fine, but I wasn't listening to anything of substantially high quality. I don't really think that is the purpose of this product.
Battery life is approximately 8 hour which gets me through most of my flying days and work days. The AirFly is easily and pretty quickly charged via the micro USB cable.
One thing that may cause some issues... Since the AirFly Transmitter has no screen which would allow you to select a specific device to pair to, trying to pair in an environment with lots of Bluetooth devices jockeying for attention may prove difficult. Think of an airplane with 2-300 other passengers all trying to connect to their various devices... This could prove especially difficult if the AirFly favors one device over another and you don't have the ability to turn that device off. If you're at home, you can determine which device is causing the problem and eliminate it from the equation.
Other than that obvious potential problem, I think the AirFly Transmitter solves a real problem and at a pretty reasonable price and I would recommend it for anyone looking to eliminate a set of wires from their audio listening experience.
-Pros:
*Price
*Size
*Simplicity
*Build Quality
-Cons:
*Possible connection difficulty in crowded Bluetooth environment

I would recommend this to a friend!

Keep the music going at your next party or backyard barbecue with this Sony portable Bluetooth speaker, which features a six-hour battery life. The compact size fits neatly on a desk or table, while the splash-proof design makes this speaker perfect beach adventures. Use the on-speaker buttons to start your tunes or turn up the volume. This Sony portable Bluetooth speaker comes with EXTRA BASS sound to bring out the best in your playlists.

Can you skip songs using the volume buttons on the speaker?

Yes. By pressing the play/pause/call button twice quickly during playback, the XB01 will skip to the beginning of the next song. I found it necessary to wait a second or two until the next song began playing before skipping to the next song. If it registers your presses too close together (3 presses), it may think you want to go back to the beginning of the current song.

How are these for running on a treadmill, I have a problem keeping Apple earbuds and other wireless earphones in my right ear when I run. Will these stay in for someone with small ears?

I think this will vary by person and the individual shape of your ear, but I don't have issues on the treadmill.

Surround yourself with robust audio performance in a slim package with this LG ultra-slim soundbar. Compatible with the latest LG televisions, the compact soundbar pairs seamlessly to deliver an immersive audio-visual experience. The 4K high resolution audio on this LG ultra-slim soundbar lets you hear the action in every scene.

Two questions: 1) Since this sound bar does not have a center speaker, how is dialogue clarity? 2) Can the subwoofer just be used occasionally; that is can it be turned off and on?

1) Dialogue clarity is excellent! 2) The sub can be turned down via the remote control so that it is virtually inactive. You can also adjust the sound EQ to turn the bass up or down to your preference. I found the LG SJ8 to really perform well in not overpowering the bass like some subs can do.

Immerse yourself in music or movies with this LG TONE Studio wearable speaker. It has four drivers to let you experience three-dimensional surround sound and feel low-frequency vibrations from the bass through your body. This LG TONE Studio wearable speaker is Bluetooth compatible for easy connection to your smart devices.

so this is a speaker that you wear around your neck? Does the sound work with and without the ear buds?

Yes. There is a switch on the neckband that allows you to easily switch between headphone mode and external speaker mode. You can set the unit down and listen without wearing it, but the sound quality is much much better when worn as intended.
