Good Vacuum, w/ Minor Shortcomings
on October 23, 2018
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Turbo 2281 was pretty easy to assemble out of the box. Everything came nicely packaged, including the three add-on tools (LED lighted crevice tool, powered brush, dusting brush, and extender wand). During assembly, I noticed the hose to unit connections were more rubberized than I've noticed on previous vacuums. Maybe this helps with a tighter seal, but I just don't feel like I ever got the connections solidly connected. My other vacuum has sturdy plastic parts that make a nice clicking sound when they are in place so you know you've got it right. While assembly was easy, I will say I'm disappointed that the vacuum unit itself doesn't have a place to mount all of the attachments. The last thing I need is finding another place to store random pieces of equipment... and then remembering where I stored them.
Once assembled and turned on, the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser packs quite a punch. It has a lot of suction! This is a great thing for a vacuum cleaner, but you could tell the suction was causing resistance when on carpeted floors. This can be partially offset by switching to the higher level floor setting. As I was making my rounds in the living room, I appreciated the maneuverability of the Bissell, but did note that it was heavier and not as easy to move around as my current upright (Shark Rotator Powered Lift-Away Speed). While it isn't a huge issue for me since I don't have a huge place, if you're doing some heavy duty cleaning over a larger area, the Bissell could wear out your wrist. I don't mean to say that it is as heavy as some of the older solid metal vacuums from back in the day, but it is heavier than most that I've used recently. All of that said, suction was great and it did pick up a lot of hair out of the carpet that you never even knew was there... WHERE DOES IT ALL COME FROM!?
What I really loved about the Bissell and where my Shark comes up short, is the powered rotating brush. Plug this in and flip the switch and you will seriously question whether or not it is safe to use on your furniture. It spins at an incredible rate and you worry you might take off the upholstery! I risked it and was amazed that it truly did erase all of the cat hairs that had become embedded and intertwined in the fabric of my couches. In just a couple of minutes, they looked brand new and free from cat hair! So I can't give this feature higher praise. If I could give it 6 stars, I would.
In conclusion, I think that the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Turbo is a good vacuum. I'd much rather use it solely to remove pet hair on my furniture than as a standard upright since it is heavier and less maneuverable than my current vacuum. Even then, it's worth it just for the powered rotating brush!
Pros:
*Suction suction suction! It has plenty of it
*Powered rotator brush
*Ease of assembly
*Lighted LED crevice tool
Cons:
*Heavier than most
*All tools cannot be mounted on the vacuum.
*Louder than I would prefer

Excellent Picture, but Stand & Ports Need Work
on October 18, 2018
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
My experience with Dell monitors has always been very pleasant. Of course, not all monitors are created equal and some have been far more enjoyable than others but still good experiences all around.
The Dell S2319NX 23" certainly lives up to my expectations for Dell quality. Packaging is nice and out of the box, the monitor looks to be built well. Assembly is pretty straight forward. Base connected to vertical support via a screw and the Base + vertical support connect easily to the back of the monitor. Unfortunately, my biggest complaint about the S2319NX is that you can only make adjustments to the tilt of the monitor, not to the vertical height. Maybe that isn't an issue for everyone, but for those working at standing desks or of different heights, we might want to customize our viewing height. You can't do that here and there doesn't appear to be any way that you could use this monitor with a multi-monitor (or single) stand that you purchased yourself. I'm clearly not a fan of the stand, but I do like the fact that the monitor has a nice sleek appearance on the back which isn't always the case. Additionally, the bezel is extremely small which I think adds an extremely modern appearance as your screen isn't bordered by a bulky box.
The picture is very satisfying. Colors are vibrant enough with plenty of brightness. Viewing angles were also quite nice and enjoyable viewing at almost up to 180 degrees. The monitor comes with the standard array of customization options which should allow most of us to find a desirable setting that suits our particular needs. I found the menu buttons slightly lacking in that you don't know what the button does before you push it.
The S2319NX does have an audio in and audio out, but does not include any built in speakers. I'm fine with this as it would just detract from the monitor itself. The monitor only has one VGA port and one HDMI port on the back which can limit its possible uses, but just requires some manual swapping like we had to do in the old days before everything (except this monitor) had six ports for every imaginable connection. Additionally, the power supply is a bulky AC adapter which I haven't noticed on any of my other monitors. This will likely be hidden behind your desk, but is a minor frustration having to cram it in with all the other bulky power packs and power strips.
In all, I think the Dell S2319NX is a good value (especially right now, it's on sale for $129.99 AND was on sale earlier for $99!). If you need a good quality monitor that will likely still be very functional even after 2-3 computers have been tossed in the garbage, this is a solid bet. Almost all of it's deficiencies can be overcome by relatively minor adjustments, but I think the lack of additional HDMI ports and vertical height adjustment are my biggest complaints and may be a deal breaker for some. If I'm just using this for a basic home office or work computer, it'll more than satisfy your needs.
Pros:
*Picture quality
*Response time
*Small bezel
*Stylish back design
*Price
Cons:
*Lack of vertical height adjustment
*Lack of more than 1 HDMI port
*Inability to mount on anything other than the included stand

Good Portable Scanner / Setup/Installation Hassle
on October 18, 2018
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
The Brother ADS-1200 came at the perfect time in my life. As I try and 'de-clutter,' I'm also trying to help my aging parents do the same while also making things like pictures and documents more accessible to our increasingly digital lives.
The Brother ADS-1200 really is extremely compact. I've had the pleasure of using a variety of different scanners from high-end business scanners to those made for more personal use--including one designed specifically for photos. First, out of the box, the ADS-1200 is very compact and can fit practically anywhere. This is good for those with limited space. Second, it's small enough to be very portable. While I find that it's build quality is sufficient for desktop use, I would not want to be throwing this in a bag and bouncing it around the country side without some sort of protection. Perhaps a carrying case?
Setup was rather involved. There is no included software, but you do have access to software options via the Brother's website. Keep this in mind if you will need this software out in the field as the scanner is definitely not plug-n-play. Once you've downloaded and installed all the software, I checked for other updates for my scanner and it needed an additional firmware update. While the process wasn't overly complex (at least for me), it wasn't seamless and I can see notice users (like my parents) getting hung up. Additionally, the ADS-1200 isn't wireless so it will require a USB (C) cable to connect to your laptop. This IS NOT included for some reason with your scanner. Make sure you either have an adapter or a true USB C cable to use. Once you do have your cable, the good thing is that the scanner can be powered entirely off of the cable which makes it great for portable/field use.
Once you have your scanner setup, scanning is relatively easy and quick. The ADS-1200 does full color duplex scans via the automatic document feeder which claims to hold up to 20, but I'd recommend less to minimize potential feeding issues (sporadic) with 15+ pages in the ADF.
Scans were quiet, quick, and of high quality. The software you download can further enhance your scans should you so desire. Whether scanning full size documents, business cards/IDs (built in slot/scanner), or pictures, the Brother ADS-1200 handled them well. Occasionally, documents (particularly longer documents) would come out slightly crooked. This isn't a huge issue for what I'm doing, but if you're one of those people where everything has to be straight, it might annoying.
In conclusion, I would recommend the Brother ADS-1200 for any light-duty scanning that you might need. Personally, it's helping preserve family memories that have been stored in boxes collecting dust. Now, they'll be digitally available forever. It's small size and portability also means that I can do this while still socializing with family. I sat mine on the coffee table and worked a couple of hundred pictures while still getting to visit with family rather than being stuck in my office with my multipurpose scanner. I can also throw it in a bag (gently) and take it to where my family lives and do work there. I think the ADS-1200 is a nice option for your scanning needs and won't break your bank in the process.
Pros:
*Size
*Portability
*Can be powered via USB or AC Adapter
*Speed
*Noise
Cons:
*Feel like it should've come with or have a carrying case to protect it during transport
*Doesn't include REQUIRED USB C cable. Since most people don't have USB C cables sitting around like they do USB A cables, I feel like some people will be surprised and disappointed once they get home and can't use it.
*ADF gets prone to misfeeds above 15 pages. But for a portable scanner, 15 should sufficient for most.

Smooth as a Baby's Bottom Shave
on October 10, 2018
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
I have used razor blades, electric foil shavers, and electric rotary shavers. Prior to the Norelco S9000 Prestige, I have been using a Norelco 5000 series.
The packaging of the S9000 is excellent. It looks and feels like a premium product. That quality continues as you open the box and reveal an extremely nice looking electric rotary shaver. The shaver is lighter than my previous razor and feels great in my hand. The chrome well let everyone know you didn't skimp on on your razor. I would've preferred to have some kind of charging stand, but that's more superficial.
The shaver itself comes with several features (nanotech blades, BeardAdapt sensor, and rings coated with metallic pigments to reduce friction) that seem more like marketing gimmicks. Maybe they are, maybe they aren't. What I can tell you is that the shave is better than my 5000 series. The S9000 Prestige has three speed/power settings: Sensitive, Normal, and Fast. Sensitive is the slowest speed but still provides a "thorough" shave. Normal would be for everyday use and fast is supposedly when you're in a hurry. For a razor that claims to not need multiple (or at least fewer) passes, I'm not sure if these settings really have an impact. After using the S9000 a couple of and playing around with the different speeds, I couldn't tell that any speed worked better/worse than the other. It might make more of a difference you had an extremely thick beard or longer growth. In any case, the shave you get is as close as you can get to a read razor blade shave. I found that the cutting heads followed the contours of my face well so that definitely minimized the number of times I had to go over areas.
One thing I really like about this razor is that it shows a detailed 3 digit battery charge percentage. Based on my use (using the normal speed), a full shave takes about 3-4%. My other Norelco razor just has a 3-bar battery indicator, but I can easily get 1.5 week of shaving off of a single shave. It looks like the S9000 will exceed that!
My only other critique (aside from wishing there was a charging stand) is the way the cutting heads are removed/opened for cleaning. My 5000 series has a hinge which you can easily flip open, clean, and leave open to let dry. The S9000 lacks the hinge so it totally detaches each time you open it. I worry it may come detached or get lost because of this. I prefer the hinged version.
In conclusion, I am very impressed with the S9000 Prestige. It definitely out performs earlier models so you're getting a better shave for the extra $$ that you're spending. I also like that you can shave wet (foam or gel) or dry. You can also get the shaver completely wet like while you're in the shower so it's very versatile. Whichever way you want to shave or where you choose to shave, you'll be impressed.
Pros:
*Close shave
*No irritation
*Excellent battery life
*Quick charge (1 hour for full battery / 5 min for a regular shave)
*Design, build quality, and appearance
Cons:
*Lack of hinge on the shaver heads like in previous models
*Lack of charging stand

Amazing Addition to My Kitchen
on October 10, 2018
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
The Ninja Foodi TenderCrisp really has me excited. The ability to cook healthier meals with minimal fuss is a big plus for me. The Ninja Foodi really delivers on this.
The build of the Foodi was, as with all Ninja products, extremely high quality. Everything from the box to the pot itself to the instructions seem well thought out and built to last. I will say that it was a lot bigger than I expected and this is the smaller of the two Foodi size! I was a little worried after my first use because I went to put under the counter and it wouldn't fit through the door! Thankfully, one set of doors was wider and it did fit, but keep that in mind. It's too big to store on your counter top (in my opinion) even though it is aesthetically pleasing to look at. My first thought when I saw it was that it resembles R2D2 from Star Wars and I think that's fitting as it can really do pretty much anything.

I've never owned or cooked with a pressure cooker before but I sure do love what usually comes out of them. The only drawback is that food cooked in a pressure cooker is usually cooked to mush. You won't get that with the Ninja Foodi. Food comes out perfectly cooked AND with a texture that is pleasing to look at and taste! Additionally, pressure cookers usually get so hot that they can cause some food to burn/stick to the edges (or is that just my mom overcooking?). This requires soaking the pot to soften all of that charred food to a point where it can be washed off. The Foodi comes with a non-stick coating and so far, so good! Food wipes out quickly and easily which makes cleanup a breeze. The Foodi also comes with a good assortment of included recipes which I'm excited to make my way through.
I do have a couple of minor critiques. The first is how the unit looks when using as a pressure cooker. The air fryer lid remains attached and flipped up (open) while the pressure cooker lid is sealed. This just looks weird and depending on your cabinet setup, you may have to pull it out or use it on your island/stove. As I mentioned before, the device is not small at all so it gets even bigger when the lid is flipped open. Maybe there wasn't a way to design around this, but I'm mentioning it anyway. The second critique is the timer beep. It's too soft for my liking as you really can't hear it in another room or if the TV is on.
In conclusion, I'm loving my Ninja Foodi so far and can't wait to see what additional dishes I can churn out for myself! I would highly recommend to anyone looking for an InstaPot type appliance that can do even more!
Pros:
*Build Quality
*Healthier Eating via air frying
*Design
*Digital display
*Super fast cooking
Cons:
*Size (very large!)
*Lid design

Understated Design w/ Supercharged Features
on October 2, 2018
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
The Logitech G Pro is truly a gamer's delight. It comes with wire and wireless options, but for those wanting to cut the wire, you won't notice a difference. Those wanting to stay hard connected will be pleased with the lightweight, yet durable rubber coated wire that doesn't interfere with the mobility of the mouse. Response times whether wired or wireless were completely undetectable by me and the range was more than enough to reach 20+ feet.
For those that like a more substantial weight, this mouse isn't for you. The mouse is extremely lightweight. I tend to prefer something in the middle, but if you're playing games all day, maybe a lighter weight is better? That's all personal preference. Those of you who like a featherweight mouse will be thrilled.
The G Pro is 100% ambidextrous. You can switch out your rightie and leftie with ease. One thing I love about the G Pro is that it comes with magnetic button covers in case you want to cover certain buttons to make them unusable. Of course, the mouse buttons can be fully customized to your liking.
Finally, as my review title indicates, the design of the mouse is very minimalist. It doesn't jump right out and tell you it is a hard core high-end gaming mouse. The LED logo can be customized to your color preferences, but you won't get a laser show like some accessories.
I found the battery life to be excellent. It is rated for up to 60 hours of continuous gaming on a single charge. I can tell you, I haven't used the mouse for 60 continuous hours. Adulting has limited my free time such that it would be impractical. However, I did use it about 30 hours over the course of one weekend and it was still going strong.
In conclusion, I would highly recommend the G Pro for those serious gamers that like a light weight but feature packed mouse.
Pros:
*Understated design (This is my personal preference)
*Magnetic button covers
*Wired/Wireless option
*Battery life
*Response Time
*Range
Cons:
*Lightweight (I prefer a mouse with a little more heft to it, but this is personal preference so I won't deduct any stars)

Packs A Lot of Sound in a Small Package
on September 24, 2018
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
The Sony XB01 is an excellent continuation of the XB family of speakers. I have the XB41 and XB31, the XB01s much larger brothers and continue to be impressed with the sound quality, performance, and especially battery life of all speakers.
The most important thing for a speaker is sound so I'll start with that. Sony has managed to squeeze a lot of sound out of such a small speaker. It will fill your room with quality sound or provide some atmospheric background sound for an outdoor space. Perfect for a day at the beach, pool, or campsite. It is water resistant (IPX5) so splashes won't kill it, but don't take it for a swim. Does it produce the best sound I've ever heard? No. Does it produce sound of such quality that I'm not ashamed to show it off? Absolutely. In fact, I'd gladly show off this speaker that is about the size of small fist but can fill a room/rooms with nice sounding music. With most small speakers, your expectations need to be adjusted. You aren't going to rattle windows with rumbling bass. However, the sounds are respectable coming from such a small speaker and high notes aren't tinny which is honestly what I expected.
Build quality is very high. It feels durable and able to survive being taking outdoors, sitting on your desk at work, or tossed around in your beach bag. All would be appropriate and easily handled by the XB01. The four raised control buttons blend in with the black on black design, but are easily recognized with touch. It also comes with a nice convenient strap that you can use to hang the speaker or carry from location to location. It also comes with a short micro-USB charging cable.
In conclusion, I would highly recommend the XB01. It packs a lot of punch for such a small speaker. If you want something that is going to have more thump, opt for one of the larger siblings. If you want something smaller to take around with you but still has 6 hours (incredible given the size!) of battery life and the power to fill a room, then the XB01 just might be for you. It's also worth mentioning that this speaker sells for $34.99! Quite frankly, I find that remarkable as I've had other speakers that cost substantially more and delivered similar if not less. So, yeah, I think the XB01 is a pretty darn good deal. Add it to your list of stocking stuffers for the holidays because I can't imagine anyone would be disappointed getting this. The uses are practically endless.
Pros:
*Size
*Weight
*Cost
*Sound quality
*Build quality
*Battery life
Cons:
*Given the price, I don't really have a con to list here.

Exceeded All Expectations...And Then Some!
on August 31, 2018
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
If you're like me and grew up partially in the analog photo days and still have boxes of pictures that you'd love to share or store (digitize), the Epson FastFoto FF-680W Wireless Photo and Document Duplex Scanner is for you. While I do love stumbling on an old envelope of pictures, I know that getting them digitized and uploaded to Dropbox, Facebook, or simply to my hard drive would make them much more accessible. And while having that tactile experience of sliding through pictures can't be replaced with scrolling through an online album, I won't miss the dust that I have to inhale each time I want to look at old pictures.
Out of the box, the Epson FastFoto has an impressively small footprint--about 12" wide, 6-7" deep, and another 12" tall. This is good news for those with less space available and certainly less space than a flatbed or all-in-one would require. Setup was a breeze and can be connected wirelessly or via the included USB. From box to scan took me a little over 5 minutes which is pretty good for any time of scanner as they are usually more complicated than attaching other types of accessories. You will need to have internet access since installation of the Epson software is required for use and this can only be done via their website.
I had about 5 envelopes/albums of pictures from the 90s that I used to test the Epson--each one with about 30 4x6 pictures. These pictures have been kept pretty clean too so very little dust--although I would always recommend using something to lightly dust/wipe your pictures to minimize transfer of said dust onto the scanning surfaces. Even doing this, transfer is inevitable and Epson was kind enough to include a cleaning cloth and a carrier sheet if your pictures are too dirty/damaged (torn/rough) to run through on their own.
The Epson sped through each album like it was nothing! Within seconds, pictures were appearing on screen in the designated album. Since this model is a duplex (front/back) scanner, you can get the back of the picture (hand written notes, dates, etc.) scanned as well. Having converted some of these back in the early 2000s via a flatbed, I can tell you this was a MUCH better experience. Not only were the pictures free of distortions, the color and details were spot on accurate. There are three settings for quality, 300dpi, 600dpi, and a software enhanced 1200dpi. I think for most everyday users, the 600dpi is sufficient, but the 1200dpi does have some useful applications if you are looking for a larger format.
What I really find useful is that you can include specific data (Date, location, etc.) for batches that you are scanning. This can then be included in the file name AND the metadata of the picture! I'm a huge fan of metadata so this thrilled me.
Another great feature is the image enhancement. You can choose to have the original AND a copy of the enhanced version (recommended) or just keep the enhanced. I preferred the enhanced version about 2/3 times--but I still like to keep the originals.
I had this album of 30 pictures scanned, enhanced, and readily available on screen to be shared or stored with approximately 1-1.5 minutes. Even typing this review, I'm still impressed by that... Years of memories can be 'upgraded' and modernized in seconds to minutes.
But wait! There's more! While the Epson FastFoto is primarily meant for pictures, it works just as well for scanning documents. I had a small box of various documents (150-200 pages) that I wanted to scan for my records. These documents were mostly 8.5x11 pages, but many included receipts and other non-standard sizes. The Espon handled them with ease and now I have one less box to store!
In conclusion, I can't say enough good things about the Epson. Since I don't take analog pictures anymore, my picture digitizing will probably be minimal, but I've decided to reach out to friends/relatives and offer to scan their pictures. *People will gladly pay you to do this! It's something they need and want to do, but never get around to doing... and it's so easy! Even if I never scanned another picture, I think the document scanning and the simplicity of the scanner are well worth the price.
Pros:
*Speed
*Accuracy/Quality
*Duplex
*Small footprint
*Wireless
Cons:
*None... Possibly one wish, would've been a 1200dpi (optical), but it isn't at all necessary and the 1200dpi software enhancement works fine.

The modern, tilted design gives you the best angle to experience its lifelike colors and ultrarealistic Quad HD resolution, and an anti-glare panel lets you work or watch anywhere you want. This HP 27Q display's 2 ms refresh time provides crisp, latency-free media, ideal for multi-monitor setups.

Beautiful Monitor!

The HP 27q is an excellent monitor and I'm very happy to be able to use it. Out of the box, the colors are true and bright. There are many standard settings like cool, warm, normal, i-style color, and user. The default is normal which is actually quite good. I prefer the i-style setting as it just makes things pop.
Viewing angle is also good with this monitor. While I wouldn't go quite as far as the specs say (178 degrees), it is easily viewable from a wide angle although the quality does diminish as your angle widens.
The base of this monitor is fairly large and isn't 100% flat on the top. That's probably not an issue for 99% of people, but I do like a flat base as I typically have things scattered all over and a flat surface helps me do that--especially if I'm taping notes or stickys.
Build quality is excellent and people will think you shelled out some dollars for this monitor even though it has a very reasonable price point of $299. To me, that is very well deserved given the high quality. The bezel is very thin which makes it look like a floating picture and something out of a movie. I love it.
In conclusion, I would highly recommend this monitor for a gamer, home office user, or corporate employee looking to replace the standard Dell that sits on their desktop.
Pros:
*Color
*Clarity
*Vividness
*Bezel size
Cons:
*Base
*Only one HDMI port

Excellent Indoor/Outdoor Antenna Option
on July 31, 2018

The ANTOP AT400 is an excellent option for those looking to cut the cable. I've been searching for a way to cut the cost of TV and my main hangup is that I'm addicted to the DVR function. So, this won't help you there, however, I was very pleasantly surprised at how good the ANTOP AT400 picked up signals for local channels I didn't even know existed. Granted, I live in an urban area, but that also means I have lost of signal interference. It wasn't a problem for the ANTOP AT 400 and all of my local broadcast stations came in crystal clear--indistinguishable from my cable service. Most of the other substations aren't of much interest to me, but I can see their value.
This would be excellent for someone wanting to cut the cable OR for that RV/weekend cabin/lake house/tailgate tent. Forget paying for some satellite service, the option of using this as a table top mounted (or other similar location) indoor antenna is extremely versatile. The fact that it can be mounted outdoors should your signal reception require it, means it is even more useful and flexible. Thankfully, I get strong signals where I am at but your individual results will vary depending on a whole host of factors. The ANTOP website has a nice feature that shows you where the signals are coming from and what you should expect from any given antenna.
As far as design, it is a little larger than I expected. It isn't exactly pleasing to look at, but it isn't unattractive either. If using inside, it could easily sit behind your TV or on a shelf. While it won't win any style awards, it looks just like any other piece of modern technology so I'm sure your wifi router and cable modem would feel right at home next to it.
If mounting outside or in the attic is your preference (or necessary), it comes with the appropriate mounting equipment and instructions. Obviously, a rule of thumb with these antennas is the higher the better but your location and signal strength will determine if it is actually necessary.
In conclusion, I think it's an excellent option to give OTA service to a TV in your home, weekend residence, camper, etc.
Pros:
-Signal reception
-Multiple stands/mounting options
-Simplistic design
-Cost (less than one month's cable bill!)
Cons:
-Size

Keep the music going at your next party or backyard barbecue with this Sony portable Bluetooth speaker, which features a six-hour battery life. The compact size fits neatly on a desk or table, while the splash-proof design makes this speaker perfect beach adventures. Use the on-speaker buttons to start your tunes or turn up the volume. This Sony portable Bluetooth speaker comes with EXTRA BASS sound to bring out the best in your playlists.

Can you skip songs using the volume buttons on the speaker?

Yes. By pressing the play/pause/call button twice quickly during playback, the XB01 will skip to the beginning of the next song. I found it necessary to wait a second or two until the next song began playing before skipping to the next song. If it registers your presses too close together (3 presses), it may think you want to go back to the beginning of the current song.

How are these for running on a treadmill, I have a problem keeping Apple earbuds and other wireless earphones in my right ear when I run. Will these stay in for someone with small ears?

I think this will vary by person and the individual shape of your ear, but I don't have issues on the treadmill.

Surround yourself with robust audio performance in a slim package with this LG ultra-slim soundbar. Compatible with the latest LG televisions, the compact soundbar pairs seamlessly to deliver an immersive audio-visual experience. The 4K high resolution audio on this LG ultra-slim soundbar lets you hear the action in every scene.

Two questions: 1) Since this sound bar does not have a center speaker, how is dialogue clarity? 2) Can the subwoofer just be used occasionally; that is can it be turned off and on?

1) Dialogue clarity is excellent! 2) The sub can be turned down via the remote control so that it is virtually inactive. You can also adjust the sound EQ to turn the bass up or down to your preference. I found the LG SJ8 to really perform well in not overpowering the bass like some subs can do.

Immerse yourself in music or movies with this LG TONE Studio wearable speaker. It has four drivers to let you experience three-dimensional surround sound and feel low-frequency vibrations from the bass through your body. This LG TONE Studio wearable speaker is Bluetooth compatible for easy connection to your smart devices.

so this is a speaker that you wear around your neck? Does the sound work with and without the ear buds?

Yes. There is a switch on the neckband that allows you to easily switch between headphone mode and external speaker mode. You can set the unit down and listen without wearing it, but the sound quality is much much better when worn as intended.
