Overall Nice Gaming Platform

I think Dell did a good job with this laptop, it provides decent gaming specs while still keeping it reasonably portable and affordable. This laptop is deceiving, it’s made of plastic but feels as solid as most metal cased laptops. It looks sleek and the overall design definitely distinguishes itself as more than an ordinary laptop. On the downside its slightly heavy for a 15” laptop. While the i5 processor matched with the 512 gb SSD make this a responsive laptop it’s the GeForce GTX 1660 video card and added software that make it a gamer. Besides the video card Dell also includes the Alien Control software that allows you to monitor the hardware as well as do some fine tuning of the hardware to improve your gaming experience. You don’t get total control of the hardware but you can select from 4 pre-configured thermal profiles that will manipulate the CPU, GPU, Thermal Comfort and Acoustic Comfort levels to give you the desired outcome. You can also build gaming profiles and store these for specific games. I found that even without doing much tweaking this laptop was plenty powerful enough to handle all the games I tried at full HD without any noticeable stutter or issue. Dell also includes the G key (F7) which when pressed really increases the performance of the laptop. I found the trick to this key is to know where you will need it within your game because you are going to want to press it before you need it.
The display does full HD 1080 resolution but it is not a touch screen. Overall the display was responsive and had good visual clarity and color. The speakers are located under the laptop and have sound ports that can be very problematic at times – see below. The power jack, USB ports, Ethernet port, HDMI, SD and headphone jacks are all located on the sides. There are 2 USB 2.0, one USB 3.0 and one USB-C port. The keyboard is lit up in blue light which is quite cool and much easier on the eyes when playing games with the lights off. I found the keys to be quite responsive and the large touch pad was easy to navigate with. The 3d audio equalizer that comes with this laptop is really nice especially with a good set of headphones. The power brick is on the large size and the power cable to the laptop is the thickest I have seen in a while. Dell claims the laptop will charge quickly thus the hefty supply and cable.

A couple of things to note about this laptop. I found this laptop to be a good compromise between my more powerful desktop and my lightweight laptop. I use headphones when I use this laptop because if anything either blocks or sits near the sound ports under the laptop the audio quality degrades rapidly. You can set the laptop on a table and the sound quality is pretty good however if your notebook or even your pen get near the sound ports it can cause the sound to become muffled and distorted. Bottom line is that if you want good sound quality you need to make sure the laptop is on a solid surface and the sound ports are clear. Luckily there is an audio headphone jack on the side and I had no issues pairing my blue tooth headphones or ear buds. Another item of note is that the bottom of the laptop can fry my legs at times even though there are two fans to help dissipate heat. The heat generation is definitely tied to how hard you run the laptop but if you are buying this to run all out while gaming expect some serious heat on the bottom and out the back. Also when you kick in the G key for higher performance the fan noise can be quite loud and annoying, another reason to use headphones if you are going to be doing any serious gaming.
For a mid-tier laptop I think the G3 delivers solid gaming performance. The Alien Control Center and the overall look and feel of the laptop and keyboard help it stand out from the competition.

Pixelbook Go is the Chromebook that goes anywhere, then keeps going. It's barely 2 pounds* and just 13mm thin. So whether you're collaborating on a Google Doc in a cafe, catching up on emails during a flight, or watching movies while on vacation, you can do more on the go.*Weight varies by configuration and manufacturing process.

Lightweight and Fast
on November 17, 2019

If you have never owned a Chromebook and are thinking about buying this one you might want to read this review. I will try to cover the things that I’ve learned. As far as hardware this Pixelbook Go is nearly perfect. It has to be one of the lightest and thinnest laptops I have ever owned and it’s the ultimate in portability. It has a solid medal case and the bottom has ripples that make it super easy to grip. Even though its light its very fast due to the solid state hard drive and processor. I wouldn’t attempt any serious video processing but for the average home or student it should be fine. The display is full 1080 and its sharp and bright and the touch screen is very responsive. The keyboard is lighted which is a plus but the keys are dead flat so it’s tough to find the home keys by feel. There are three total ports, two are USB-C style ports and the other is a headphone jack. The USB-C is used to charge the laptop and it has a fast charge feature. The supplied power cube is larger than most and may present an issue because it plugs directly into the outlet vs being a corded power brick. The battery life on this Chromebook is listed as 12 hours and I have gotten close to that number. There are two front firing speakers alongside the keyboard that produce sound way beyond what you would expect from a laptop! The built in wireless is fast and my throughput on my wireless is what I would expect. The Bluetooth quickly found my mouse and ear buds without issue.
Using Chrome OS was a bit of a transition from Windows. Everything is browser based versus menu based so you need to learn the correct urls to get the information that you want. For example if you want to get the system information you need to open Chrome and type chrome://system. And then you either read through the webpage or use the search feature to find whatever you want to see. There are some simple things that are still menu based like the display settings, volume, wireless setting and a few others. To access the programs you select a Circle in the left hand corner and it brings up your apps. Everything seems to be there its just a totally different way of accessing it from a Windows system or even from an Android phone. A major plus for this Pixelbook is the inclusion of Google docs which I was very happy to see could handle any Word or Excel file I tried to open. After a quick search I learned how to use Chrome to access the files on my home network. Natively Chrome is set up to get files from the cloud and not your local network. The good news is that there is a lot of information on the web on how to use Chrome OS. Google also included a photo viewer that is super fast in loading and includes enough features to make it worthwhile. Because Chrome OS is app based there are tons of applications that are available. I downloaded the Spotify app and was able to really enjoy my playlist using the speakers on this Pixelbook. Overall its kind of an adventure transitioning from Windows to Chrome OS but this Pixelbook has made it fun and worthwhile. The typical user who uses this Pixelbook for playing media and using the typical apps or games will have no problem adjusting to Chrome OS.
As I said this Pixelbook is close to being perfect. There are a few things that I wish they would improve. I am not a fan of the keyboard as I stated above but its not a show stopper. I was worried about the small amount of physical hard drive space included in the system. The push is for everyone to use the cloud but because this Pixelbook is so perfect for travel getting access to the cloud could be an issue. To avoid this issue I purchased a 500 gig external SSD that is USB-C compatible and that solved the concern. Lastly I wish Google would have include some additional utility apps like an equalizer for example. Yes I went out and downloaded a couple of equalizers but then I had to figure out which ones worked the best without bombarding me with ads. It would have been nicer to have more of the basic apps included in the system.

Sound Performance
on October 31, 2019
Posted by: explore42

Overall I thought these ear buds performed reasonably well . The 3 hour battery life, the occasional dropped connection and the delay in lip sync maybe problematic for some.
Fit: The Sesh ear buds are totally wireless and mount in the opening of your ear. There is no ear hook so all the support and comfort of the fit relies on the way the silicone end piece fits in your ear canal. Three sizes of end pieces are provided and after a little testing I found one that fit well enough that I could move around without fear of an ear bud falling out.
Setup: The directions provided with the Sesh are not very intuitive. I ended up going to the website where better directions are provided. The ear buds come in a very nice case where they are magnetically pulled into the charging position. On the outside of the case there is line of led lights that show the battery level. Each ear bud has a small LED on the side to show you when its charging and when its pairing. The ear buds go into pairing mode as soon as you remove them from the case. I found that this was the best way to pair them, if they did not pair properly I would just reseat them in the case until the red light came on and then I would remove them and try to pair them again. Usually the ear buds paired quickly but there were times where it took a couple of attempts. There are extensive directions on the web site to address any pairing issues.
Functionality: The ear buds each have a single mechanical button on them that are used in various combinations to do everything from changing the volume to answering the phone. If you plan on using the ear buds for control expect to spend some time memorizing the commands. Secondly because of the fit the only thing supporting the ear bud is your ear so when you are pressing a mechanical button it can be annoying to your ear. I tested the Seth using my Ipad, Laptop and Samsung phone. I was able to pair with all the devices and go issue free within about a 20 ft space. Beyond 20 ft I would occasionally get drop outs but once I was back within range the ear buds would sync automatically. I was also able to connect with Siri, Ok Google and Alexa with good results.
Sound Quality: The ear buds provide the sound quality I would expect at this price point. No they don’t have booming bass or crystal clear highs but they do provide reasonably good sound quality. The overall sound performance will depend more on the quality of the music you stream and the equalizer – player program you use. Given good music to play I believe these ear buds can deliver. If you are using these to watch YouTube or a streaming movie expect to see some lip sync delay. It wasn’t the worse I have seen from wireless ear buds but its definitely there.

Heavy Hitter

My first impression when I took this Dell out of the box was wow this thing is solid. By solid I mean the exterior metal cover looks and feels like a high quality refined piece of equipment. My second thought was wow it weighs a ton. But I wanted the larger 15 inch screen and I wanted the 2in1 which means heavier hinges on the screen so it was a trade off I was willing to make. At this size and weight this Dell 2in1 will never replace my tablet but what it does do is allow me to have some versatility that a standard laptop would not. Spec wise this laptop does a good job of delivering a decent performance for its cost point. You can spend a lot more to get an upgraded video card, 4k video display and an upgraded processor but for my needs the Intel video, HD screen and Intel i5 processor was a perfect match. It has more than enough power to let me stream HD video or work any office application without heating up or bogging down. I am not sure if the HDR display capability really means that much on a 15 inch screen but it’s nice to know it’s there. The MaxxAudio Pro boost included with the laptop really took me by surprise. I own several laptops and the audio quality in my headphones was the best I have ever heard from a laptop. Not sure what it’s doing differently but the sound quality is outstanding. The 500G SSD drive is super-fast and because of that the laptop boots up very quickly. The laptop has 2 of the newer USB 3.1 slots, an HDMI port and a Thunderbolt 3 port. The Thunderbolt port looks like a USB-C port but it has more functions than a standard USB port. I use mine to attach an external SSD drive thus I get much higher transfer rates than a standard USB would. The 2in1 performance will depend on what you are looking for. I like the fact that I can flip the screen over and have a tablet like device that still uses windows style apps. In the tablet mode this 2in1 performs solidly and I am yet to find an issue whether I am running a windows app or a standard pc program. The laptop also list that its Wifi 6 capable but since my home wireless is not wifi 6 I have not been able to see the benefit. Eventually when I do upgrade my router its nice to know this laptop will be ready to go. The only negative I have with this laptop is that it doesn't have an ethernet jack or an ethernet dongle cord included. I really like this Dell 2in1 and would highly recommend it for the average user.

Elements Guides you to be an Expert Video Editor
on October 26, 2019
Posted by: explore42
from Cincinnati Ohio
Over the years I have shot videos using VHS and HD camcorders, 4k action cameras and various Android and Apple phones. I would use the video editing program that came with the camera or phone to help clean up the images but most of them were lacking the features and capabilities I found in Elements. Elements allows me to enhance and combine various video clips shot from multiple devices into a single movie. Because the program is feature rich it can be confusing at first but luckily it includes multiple ways to help you learn how to use the program. It also incorporates facial recognition and auto tagging which helps organize and categorize your video segments. When you open Elements there is a film strip showing many of the typical task as well as an Auto Creation section where the program has auto created a movie for you! If you click on a task on the film strip such as Trim Your Video it will walk you through the steps that are needed to trim your video. You can bypass the film strip options and enter Elements Video Editor directly where you can select Quick, Guided or Expert mode. In the Guided mode there are 23 task that use animation to show you how to get many of the most popular task done with the least amount of issues. Once you learn the steps you can skip the Guided mode and go directly into the Expert mode. In Expert mode there are more features and options including one I needed which removes the graininess (noise) from old or poorly exposed movies. Adobe gives you total control over editing the video image in Expert mode while keeping it simple enough that anyone with enough time can master the techniques. The software allows you to create your own movies by combining video clips, photos, text and music. There are so many features and options in this program when it comes to transitions, music and video quality enhancements that you can spend more time selecting options than actually creating the movie. I run this program on a high powered PC and it does take time and resources when exporting or rendering a movie. Make sure your system meets Adobe’s requirements.

Not Quite the Ultimate
on October 19, 2019
Posted by: explore42
from Cincinnati Ohio
Overall I like the software and its features. However it doesn’t include the Anti Tracking which to me is a major part of protecting your identification. Secondly it doesn’t include the Driver Update software which is included in competitive software. Both of these are major negatives. The installation is more user intensive than I would like and may prove to be problematic for some. The Android Cell phone protection seems to work but the App isn’t labeled correctly. One thing to note is that this software does not force you to enter a credit card for future automatic renewals which I consider a major plus.
Installation - This software does not automatically remove competitive security software. After you download this software it is up to you to remove any other security software. This isn’t an issue for me but might be for someone else. After you download the software it also does not automatically activate everything, it only activates the Internet Security and Password Protect features. Its up to you to activate the Tune Up and Secure VPN features.
Setup - The software does an initial scan of your system and makes numerous recommendations. This actually was quite interesting because I have never seen this level of detail. I chose to implement all the recommended settings and functions the software recommended and did not have any issues.
Running - Its difficult to say how well the software is performing. So far I haven’t gotten any viruses or malware but I didn’t get that with the other brands either. The software doesn’t seem to have affected the overall performance of my computers but only time will tell if it stays that way.
UnUltimate – You would think if you bought the Ultimate software that you would get everything available but that’s not the case. The Anti Tracking software is not included and cost an additional monthly charge. It also does not include the Driver Updater which is another fee to purchase. On a plus side the number of pop up ads trying to upsell me on these products so far has been minimal.
Android Protection – This software also protects Android phones but you wont find an AVG Ultimate App in the App Store. I just downloaded the latest AVG Internet Security and when I entered my activation code it took it. I have no idea whether I am getting all the protection of the Ultimate since there was no Ultimate app.

Solid Performer

This Ninja vacuum blender is a very well built, sturdy blender. Once you place it on the counter the little vacuum feet lock it down and no matter what we blend the unit sits rock solid. I have made several things from pureeing vegetables and fruits to making icy margaritas and this blender never bogs down or has any problem performing the task due to its high capacity motor. The vacuum feature is new to me and it definitely keeps juices from frothing over when you blend them. This blender also includes a micro juice filter that limits the pulp in the juice. The high speed blades in combination with the filter delivers a silky smooth juice that is extremely well blended. It’s also great at turning ice cubes into very smooth slushie style drinks, there aren’t any chips left over its that good at crushing the ice. The best feature of this blender in my opinion are the seven IQ buttons. These are preprogrammed settings for extract, puree, smoothie, frozen drink, ice cream, juice and dressing. I have used most of them and they work wonderfully by automatically pausing and blending over a predetermined time depending on the button pushed. No more having to figure out how long to push what button, you just load in the ingredients and push the IQ button for fantastic results. They also include a personal sized blender cup which is very convenient for creating a juice, smoothie or a chocolate malt in a single serving size. There are a few downsides to this blender but they aren’t major issues. The power cord is very short which means you have to be close to an outlet. The main pitcher is huge, it holds 72 ounces but the downside is that it doesn’t fit under our cabinet for storage because of its combined height with the base. The vacuum is a really nice feature when making juices. It removes the air from the pitcher prior to the blending process but it can be loud when it runs. I assume for safety reasons the main pitcher is a single piece, the main pitcher has the blades built into its base however this makes cleaning slightly more difficult. My old pitcher was a two piece system where the base with the blades could be easily unscrewed from the pitcher for thorough cleaning but this not the case with this blender. Ninja supplies an adequate manual, quick guide and a limited recipe book. They are good enough to get you started but no where near extensive enough to help you unlock all the capabilities this blender has to offer. Overall I am very happy with the blender and its performance.

Bang Up Job
on September 11, 2019
Posted by: explore42
from Cincinnati Ohio
I rated this Shark vacuum robot four stars because of its performance to cost. There are more feature rich robot vacuums out there at a higher cost but at this price point I think this vacuum does a fairly nice job. Getting the vacuum to work using the manual buttons was easy. I unpacked the unit, attached the brushes and put it on the charger. Once it was fully charged I hit the clean button on the top and off it went bumping and bouncing around the rooms. It does a decent job vacuuming the floor in a random pattern, this is not a self-learning or programable vacuum. So far it seems to cover a room reasonably well but it tends to bump into things way more often than I would have expected. Basically there is a bumper guard on the front that tells the vacuum when it has hit something, Once this happens the vacuum will rotate a certain amount and try to move forward again. This process repeats until the vacuum has worked its way around the obstacle or until it’s turned all the way around and headed back the way it came. Because it’s using the hit and turn method the cleaning pattern is never the same two days in a row. Also because the vacuum sits low I have had it wedge itself under furniture that I would never have considered possible. After a couple of vacuum sessions I was able to identify the problem areas around my house and I fixed these either by placing something to block the vacuum or I used the magnetic strip that came with the unit. On the plus side it has no issue sensing steps and only once has it stopped half way across the step and turned on an alarm. Each day I run it around my second floor and it does a nice job vacuuming. The downside of this vacuum is in the wireless and Phone App for me. The vacuum would not register with my dual band 2.4 and 5 ghz router so I had to register it to my guest network which is a dedicated 2.4 ghz channel. Once I did that I was able to get the app and vacuum to sync with my phone. According to the App you are supposed to be able to control the vacuum just like you would with the buttons on top of the vacuum. For me this was not the case. I was able to get the vacuum to start cleaning but I could never get it to return to the Dock using the command on the phone. Luckily the vacuum does a really good job of returning to the docking station on its own when it’s getting low on battery. The App does notify you when the vacuum has an error and it also gives you a history of how long the vacuum ran each day. You can use the App to schedule a time for the vacuum to start cleaning but the session is always 60 minutes which is a limitation.
Pros:
• Reasonable job vacuuming carpet and hard wood floors.
• So far has found the docking station on its own every time
• No problem sensing the steps
Cons:
• Wireless can be difficult to set up.
• Docking command in the App would not work
• The Dust Bin Button makes emptying the Dust Bin difficult
• Because of the bumping it might be too noisy for some to use at night

Great for anyone with Food allergies
on September 3, 2019

I got this air fryer for several reasons and none of them were for French fries. I thought that since this cooks so quickly with little or no added oils it would save us time, energy and be a healthy alternative. Also for anyone who has food allergies or is a vegetarian it gives you a way to cook food totally separate of other items being cooked in the kitchen. Because the unit is self-contained and easy to clean it’s a great way to make sure the food is cooked without coming into contact with any contaminants. The Ninja XL is easy to set up and operate. There are 7 cooking modes and it has a wide temperature range so there are a lot of cooking options. Pick your cooking mode – most of time we use Air Fry, set the temperature and timer and hit the start. There is an instruction book and a small cook book that comes with the Air Fryer that has general recommendations on the settings. Once you get used to how quickly this thing cooks you can better estimate what time to set on the timer. The first time we cooked some chicken breasts my wife had to get a meat thermometer to double check the temperature because she couldn’t believe they were done so quickly. You have to be vigilant as you try cooking new things because this will cook the food faster than you expect.
- The XL is wide so it cooks more but needs more counterspace
- The cooking basket is large but its easy to manipulate due to its easy to grip handle
- Lots of flexibility between the 7 cooking modes and temperature ranges
- Its reasonably quiet for having a fan inside
- Expect to spend more time checking the food than you would normally do at least until you get used to how quickly it cooks
- Dishwasher safe but it cleans up so easily in the sink we never use the dishwasher
- Provides a faster healthier way to cook your food.
- Great solution for someone with food allergies who needs to cook their food away from allergens.

Total Control if you Customize the Remote
on September 2, 2019
Posted by: explore42
from Cincinnati Ohio
I nearly gave up on this remote because I was so frustrated with the way the stock configuration worked. I was able to download the app on my phone and get the remote paired with my phone and wireless network without any issues. I then started adding devices using the device’s model numbers which is the way I would recommend doing it. Once I got the devices added I then tried to start using the remote and this is where the issues started. I have small hands and fingers but trying to get the right function to work on the trackpad was nearly impossible. Other remotes have the physical buttons so you know the difference between the up key and the enter key. On this remote the trackpad has no buttons so it’s a guessing game to find the exact right spot. Also several of the standard configuration screens had buttons I had no interest in using or they were located in the wrong order. The buttons for the Roku for example did not mimic the position of my Roku remote which adds to the confusion. See photos. Luckily I found the Customize Screen Layout option on the phone app and this is what you need to use to make this remote really shine. Using the Customize function I was able to replace the trackpad with individual up, down, left, right and enter buttons – see photos. Now I knew exactly where to push to get the function I wanted. Next I realized I could Customize what buttons I wanted to use for each device. For example my Denon remote has 66 buttons! Out of those 66 buttons I was able to create 2 simple screens on the Sevenhugs, one for adjusting the volume and sound options and one for selecting the source. Each screen has only the necessary buttons which drastically simplifies the operation. I did the same thing for my TV, Blu-Ray player and Roku. On other high end remotes that I have I was able to combine IR commands to operate everything but I still had a zillion buttons that I never touched and even though I could program and name some of the buttons I did not have total control of the way the buttons were aligned. With the Customize Screen Layout in the phone app you can put whatever button you want where ever you want it on the remote. You basically can design your own remote with as many or as few buttons as you require in any sequence to meet your needs. Because I can now simplify the remote screen by only showing the buttons that are necessary to control the device in use makes it far more usable for anyone who is not a tech geek. Handing someone a Universal remote with 60 plus buttons and trying to explain what buttons are required for what device is insane compared to handing them this customized remote that only shows buttons they understand and need. It’s not perfect however, I still have some concerns:
1. I cannot get my TP link smart outlets to register with the app. I have been working with Sevenhugs support but so far no resolution.
2. The remote is small, too small in my opinion and difficult to use one handed. On other remotes you can rest your hand on a button without pushing it. On this remote any touch activates the function. This isn’t a show stopper and I am guessing with time I will get better at it.
3. The documentation on how to set up the remote and to customize it was not intuitive. Once I realized I could customize things I started searching for information and found it but it should be included either as a tutorial on the phone app or on paper packaged with the remote.
4. Using the phone app and customizing the remote takes some time and some thought as to what and where buttons should be shown. You cannot just drag a button to a new location, you need to delete it first, then re-add it in the new location. Because of this the set up can be tedious.

Is this printer good for home use from a computer and my iPhone?

As long as you are printing about 100 to 200 pages per month this printer should work for you. The HP Smart software works on my Ipad so it should work on your iphone. Download the app from the Apple store and check it out. I have the software on my ipad and my windows laptop and can print without any issues. There are also buttons on the printer if you would prefer to use them vs the software app. This printer can scan, print and copy but it cannot receive faxes. You can send a fax using HP's cloud services but it cannot receive a fax. Also if you do a lot of color printing realize that the colors are in a single cartridge with this printer so if one color is used up you have to replace the entire color cartridge.

Enhance your mobile play experience with these Emerge gaming triggers. They can be added to smartphones to provide more satisfying left and right buttons, and the tactile switches are great for use with first-person shooters. These Emerge gaming triggers have suction cups to hold them securely in place during use.

Will they work on an iPad mini???

As long as you can download the HP Sprocket software from the Apple store and you can turn on the Bluetooth connectivity on your IPAD the printer should work fine.

Say goodbye to cords and cables with these Skullcandy Sesh true wireless headphones. Bluetooth technology seamlessly connects to your smartphone, tablet or PC, letting you stream music or take phone calls with the built-in microphone. These water-resistant Skullcandy Sesh true wireless headphones come with a charging case, providing up to an extra 7 hours of listening time.

What is the maximum distance that the blue tooth works before it disconnects from your phone??

The documentation for the Skullcandy Sesh says 30 feet but that varies with the device you are connected to and the environment you are in. I found that I could easily go to over 30 ft when connected to my IPAD but my at that same distance I would get drop outs when connected to my Samsung phone. The things to consider are the environment - thickness of walls and floors as well as other electronics that may be supplying interference.
