A solid, unremarkable breakup record
on March 24, 2017

Verified Purchase:Yes
Prisoner, Ryan Adams' 16th solo record is unsurprising but solid. Much of Prisoner is anguished breakup songs, presumably inspired at least in part by the breakup of Adams' marriage to Mandy Moore. Prisoner's music is fairly familiar and simple. Prisoner starts with Do You Still Love Me?, which has a simple, stomping sound which lets the intensity of Adams' feelings come through clearly. Adams seems to take some responsibility for his partner's reduced affection as he asks "why can't I feel your love?" On Prisoner, Adams' ability to create a poignant sound overcomes the lack of subtlety of the metaphors("waiting on parole", "I am a criminal") Ryan uses for feeling a love he knows is wrong. Adams continues to write about a big, painful love on Doomsday, bemoaning his lover's lack of commitment where she once said she'd love him until the apocalypse. To Be Without You is more self pity saved by tuneful music. Haunted House pales in comparison to Adams' similar Halloween Head but it's one of Prisoner's better songs as Adams declares that he wants to move beyond his sad, lonely present. The music's taste of optimism makes Adams' mopey moan easier to take. Adams' consistently downbeat tone gives Prisoner interesting consistency. And Adams' musical gifts save Prisoner from being a bore. But I'm ready for Adams to challenge himself and have the energy and variety he had on his 2014 self titled record and even his 2015 cover of Taylor Swift's 1989.

A little poppier, still good and distinctive

The xx gained attention and a devout following with a quiet, stark, atmospheric sound. I See You, the band's third record, has a slightly fuller, more standard sound. The band has stepped a bit away from what made them special but I See You isn't slick and cynical. And I'm all for catchy songs like On Hold, I Dare You, Say Something Loving and A Violent Noise. I See You is a good, confident sounding record.

Another beautiful cd and a little more range

22, A Million, is the third record by Justin Vernon's alter ego Bon Iver. On 22, A Million Vernon varies his sound a bit. He goes beyond the stark sound and fragile voice of his earlier work, filtering his voice to sound like a benevolent robot or alien and even adding beats to 33 "God" and 10 dEAThbREasT, evoking Lost In The World, which he did with Kanye West. But 22, A Million is hardly a hook filled pop CD. Like Bon Iver's previous CDs, it's often slow and sprawling. It also is like the earlier music in its remarkable beauty. Much of 22, A Million is stark and personal but it has the fascinating feeling of a loner reaching out for contact.

Bob Mould's renaissance continues on Patch The Sky
on May 9, 2016

Bob Mould's contribution to the post-punk canon would have been very substantial if he, as he seemed to say he would, retired from hard rock after 1998's Last Dog and Pony Show. From his work on Husker Du's six mid 80s records through his two commercially successful Sugar records in 92 and 95 and his very good "Hubcap" in 96, Mould was responsible for a lot of great tuneful but hard rocking music. But after more than a decade of doing things that I didn't find that interesting, including working in professional wrestling and making electronic music, Bob Mould has made an amazing comeback in his mid and late 50s with terrific CDs: Silver Age, Beauty & Ruin and, now, Patch The Sky, which might be the best of the three. Mould has apparently worked through things, including his father's death. He seems angry but engaged and very committed. Mould presumably can effortlessly come up with melodic, driving guitar lines but it's still impressive how Mould makes a big, hook filled sound. His hard edged growl creates a personal feeling and still fits with the appealing songs. Even Mould's best solo work has had songs that weren't so interesting. Amazingly, on Patch The Sky, even when the lyrics are dark, the songs stay catchy. That only ends on the last song Monument, where Mould's music matches the lyrics' confession that while "I create so confident walls of sound", "my black heart, it burns." But on the rest of Patch The Sky Mould harnesses Mould's self doubt and turns it into intense but accessible compellingly intense guitar rock.

A good introduction to an amazing early rocker
on May 9, 2016

Buddy Holly was a remarkable talent. It's unbelievable that he wrote and recorded so many great songs before dying at 22. Every song on The 12 track Best of Buddy Holly CD is terrific. The 26 minute CD hardly captures all of Holly's really good songs, leaving out Peggy Sue Got Married and Crying, Waiting, Hoping(both nicely done in movies by Marshall Crenshaw) and Well All Right, among others. But it gives a good sense of Holly's ability to write and put together a tight, rocking pop song, an ability that clearly influenced the Beatles. Holly, along with Chuck Berry, took the ingredients of early rock and roll and, with crisp, well developed guitar lines, moved it a great distance forward. The sound is, at times, primitive, like the apparent thigh slapping drumming on Everyday. But the innocence of the background vocals and some of the lyrics and singing, masks a tough, savvy performer who innovated and made rock and roll a lot better by helping develop multi-track recording. It's tantalizing and frustrating to think of what Holly could have done if he had survived his plane crash. There are a couple smooth, orchestra backed ballads(True Love Ways and It Doesn't Matter Any More) on the Best of CD. But it seems clear that Holly would have continued to make concise, tough, catchy songs like the ones on the Best of CD.

Good variety from a very good songwriter

Sermon on the Rocks is a mostly very good mix of fun folk rockers and serious songs from one of our best songwriters.
My favorites on Sermon On The Rocks are rollicking songs, like Young Moses, Cumberland, Getting Ready To Get Down and especially the exuberant Where The Night Goes(with its Romeo's Tune style keyboard line), where Ritter creates joyful momentum to match bright images. He also does so with the sublimely slow build on Homecoming.
Ritter's vivid songwriting also shines on dark songs like Henrietta, Indiana, about the awful aftermath when the town mill is shut up tight, and Seeing Me Round, where Ritter, after detailing "all you put me through", threatens to stay around.
I could do without the heavy, foreboding Birds of the Meadow, where Ritter tells us he's come to prophesize that "fire is coming." But Sermon on the Rocks, whether in its standard form or on a less polished, more acoustic bonus disc, is a fine group of songs.

Another Pretty Good Cage The Elephant Record
on February 3, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
Cage The Elephant have a history of releasing decent records that have a couple of really good songs. Melophobia, Cage the Elephant's last CD had three really good singles: Come A Little Closer; Take It Or Leave It and the exceptional Cigarette Daydreams. On Tell Me I'm Pretty, their fourth CD, Cage The Elephant presumably wanted to step up to the next level of quality and success by working with Dan Auerbach, leader of arena filling blues rockers Black Keys. They gave us a great first impression of the CD with the single Mess Around, which resembles Black Keys' Lonely Boy but, with its fun, frenetic energy, is an original. The rest of Tell Me I'm Pretty may be a bit more consistent than previous Cage records but it's fairly similar to their other music. It's kind of weird, and kind of cool rock with a bunch of OK songs. Cry Baby, Trouble and That's Right(a goofy companion to Mess Around) are good. The rest of Tell Me I'm Pretty is fine but not great.

Sounds amazingly like a 70s ELO record
on December 14, 2015
Posted by: LarryG
Verified Purchase:Yes
Remarkably, Alone In The Universe fully captures the sound of ELO's 70s classic records. Alone in the Universe is basically a Jeff Lynne solo record. Since he's a studio whiz and he was the primary vocalist and architect of ELO's sound, it's not surprising that Alone In The Universe has the classic ELO sound. What's more notable is that it's a good record, with carefully crafted songs, that could be a lost work from ELO's peak years. It has lots of ELO trademarks. When I Was A Boy continues Lynne's tradition of Beatles tributes. Alone In The Universe has just Lynne doing almost all the vocals and music but it has the band's distinctive depth of sound. A few of the songs are good re-creations rather than exciting songs but some, like the more rocking Ain't It A Drag and One Step At A Fun, are really fun and comparable in quality to ELO's best.

Good CD for Forster's fans.
on December 14, 2015

Robert Forster's last CD, The Evangelist, was hauntingly beautiful. It was strongly influenced by the death of Grant McLennan, Forster's partner from the band The Go-Betweens. Using unreleased McLennan lyrics as well as lyrics about McLennan, The Evangelist was a moving tribute that also had McLennan's simple, joyful spirit. Songs to Play is less extraordinary but, like Forster's later work with the Go-Betweens, it's not as stilted as Forster's earlier music but still funny and idiosyncratic. The music is fairly basic and pleasant. It doesn't distract from the songs' vivid characters and stories. Songs To Play is a worthy addition to a the collection of a Forster of Go-Betweens fan.
