You can't go wrong with a S&G hits CD.

Simon and Garfunkel were great. Paul Simon's songs were beautiful, smart, fun, varied, ambitious and imaginative. Playlist: The Very Best of Simon & Garfunkel is apparently the exactly same songs that were originally released as Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits, with the same live versions of For Emily and Feelin' Groovy, for only $3.99. You could also give Best Buy three more dollars for The Best of Simon and Garfunkel, which has the same songs as Very Best, except for Kathy's Song, plus The Dangling Conversation, Hazy Shade of Winter, At The Zoo, Fakin' It, The Only Living Boy In New York, Song For the Asking and My Little Town. Either way, Simon and Garfunkel's greatest hits are pretty consistently terrific.

A very good, affordable HDTV

The Samsung 50" is my first hi-def TV. I think it's the perfect size. It's big enough to let you see everything clearly, with good resolution, but it doesn't take over the room.
I like that it's easy to get to Netflix and YouTube.

A Good Step Into the Mainstream For The National
on October 6, 2017

With his El Vy side project, National front man Matt Berninger showed an interest in moving towards pop music. On Sleep Well Beast, their seventh album, The National comfortably create a more accessible sound while retaining their distinctive personality. The National knock it out of the park on The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness. The System takes Matt Berninger's vocal reticence and uses catchy slashing guitar lines and keyboard atmospherics to make a foreboding but compelling song. The Day I Die is very likable, with a driving beat, a terrific guitar riff and Berninger showing more energy than usual. The sweet Nobody Else Will Be There and sad Carin at the Liquor Store are nice ballads. The National don't sell out on Sleep Well Beast. The CD has its share of sprawling and atmospheric songs as well as the kooky rocker Turtleneck. But Sleep Well Beast is mostly very appealing.

A fine but not great Fleet Foxes record
on July 3, 2017

Verified Purchase:Yes
On Crack-Up, their third full length record, Fleet Foxes again show their skill for making lush music. Crack-Up's songs have the beautiful harmonies and Robin Pecknold's sense of yearning that have characterized Fleet Foxes' work. But Crack-Up lacks the perfectly crafted songs like Helplessness Blues or White Winter Hymnal that focused the band's sometimes sprawling sound on the first two records. Third of May, Crack-Up's first single, is ok(before it loses its focus and segues into Odaighara) but it's not transcendent like the band's best songs. The second single Fool's Errand is better, with its sweet sound and melancholy lyric about realizing "blind love couldn't win." It's a standout on a good but not great record.

Hitchcock's music is still fun, weird and smart
on June 30, 2017

Robyn Hitchcock's new self titled record is a reassuring set of songs that shows that Hitchcock, at 64, is still committed to making good, fun poppy rock.
The songs are fully fleshed out. They remind me of Hitchcock's late 80s and early 90s work in being catchy while retaining his quirky, smart distinctiveness.
Hitchcock is engaged and mischievous. On I Want to Tell You About What I Want he takes his time, telling us that we think he's a thug and that we have "cannibal overlords" before telling us that what he wants is "world peace" "socialismo no machismo", that the only God should be the God of L-O-V-E" and that he wants "a non invasive form of telepathy." On Virginia Woolf, he's oddly jolly in paying tribute to suicidal writers. On I Pray When I'm Drunk, Hitchock does a nice job staying within the country song form. With decent variety, the good songs keep coming on Robyn Hitchcock.

Not quite as great as Brill Bruisers, still great
on April 22, 2017
Posted by: LarryG
Verified Purchase:Yes
Carl Newman's credentials as perhaps our greatest creator of hooky pop rock keep growing. Whiteout Conditions isn't quite as consistently catchy as the NPs 2014 Brill Bruisers but it has some of his most irresistible songs ever. Whiteout Conditions' title track is a masterpiece, with rhymes inside of rhymes and a driving beat. The record makes ample use of Neko Case's beautiful vocals. Newman has her harmonizing, alternating vocals and singing lead on the terrific This is the World of the Theater. There's a little more of a synth/drum machine vibe than on previous NP records but Case's warm voice and Newman's tight song construction keep the songs very appealing, as is perhaps best shown on the excellent High Ticket Attractions. The contrast normally provided by the songs of the eccentric Dan Bejar, who is absent from a NP record for the first time, is missed a bit and the middle of the record is a bit insubstantial. But Whiteout Conditions is mostly great, finishing with the buoyant Clockwise and Avalanche Alley.

Another good, grownup Feelies CD
on March 31, 2017
Posted by: LarryG
Verified Purchase:Yes
In Between, The Feelies' sixth record and their second since getting back together in 2008 after a 17 year break, is a good, grownup record. The playing isn't as fast and intense as on the band's early records but The Feelies still have an interesting guitar sound. Leader Glenn Mercer always has had a laid back vocal style. The Feelies are generally pretty mellow these days. The songs have a nice, smooth feel that's made compelling by thoughtfully layered instruments and a variety of guitar riffs. The patient, full sound is appealingly mature and once in a while, like on Gone Gone Gone, the Feelies show they can still rock.

A mostly successful new synt and beat based sound
on March 26, 2017

I have mixed feelings about Hot Thoughts, Spoon's new record. It's a lesser work by one of our best bands. Hot Thoughts doesn't emphasize the strengths of the band and its gifted leader Britt Daniel. But perhaps it was best not to try to repeat the remarkable deep, interesting They Want My Soul. Spoon does something different on Hot Thoughts, emphasizing synths and beats. The result often seems intentionally superficial, like on Can I Sit Next To You, which is catchy but reminiscent of Greg Kihn's unremarkable 80s synth pop hit Jeopardy. There are good songs like the title track, an appealing dance song that communicates the thrill and vulnerability of an exciting, uncontrollable love. WhisperI'lllistentohearit is a good, edgy rocker. The mid tempo Tear It Down, the most like a typical Spoon song, shows Daniel's gift with a hook. On Hot Thoughts Spoon tries new sounds with mostly effective results.

Grandaddy's comeback is very likable
on March 26, 2017
Posted by: LarryG
Verified Purchase:Yes
Eleven years after its last record, Grandaddy is back with the very good Last Place. Jason Lytle, who apparently made almost all the music on Last Place, has recreated the winning sound of 2003's Sumday, which had the terrific singles Now It's On and El Camino's In The West. Last Place shows Lytle's gift for creating an inviting lo-fi sound. The fact that his guitar and keyboard based arrangements seem simple masks the songs' tight construction. Similarly, Lytle's very laid back vocals seem effortless but they pull you in with their tunefulness and lack of pretention. Grandaddy's return was smartly introduced with the release, months before Last Place, of the single Way We Won't. With its chugging guitar and drums and very catchy keyboard line, Way We Won't is remarkably inviting. The rest of Last Place isn't quite as amazing but it's consistently appealing and well put together with a mix of mellow songs and good rockers like Brush With the Law and Chek Injin.

Heartworm is another disappointing Shins record
on March 26, 2017
Posted by: LarryG
Verified Purchase:Yes
The Shins' recent career has disappointed me. James Mercer's band started great with the smart, idiosyncratic Oh, Inverted World, Chutes Too Narrow and 2007's Wincing the Night Away. After Wincing, Mercer took a break from the Shins, apparently firing the original Shins, and worked with Gnarls Barkley' s Danger Mouse in Broken Bells. Mercer came back to The Shins in 2012 with Port of Morrow which, with the exception of the irresistible Simple Song, was mostly a bore. After another long break, The Shins are back with Heartworms. The initial signs were good. The first single Dead Alive has a mischievous feel and the classic Shins sound. The second single Name For You is even better. It's literate but tuneful like the great Shins songs Phantom Limb and Turn On Me. But Heartworms is a letdown. Mercer has largely lost his light touch. Heartworms is filled with self important songs which meander with clunky percussion or electronics and too much focus on Mercer's not great vocals. A notable exception is the very good memory piece Mildenhall, which is nicely stripped down and sincere. But with the exception of Mildenhall and the singles, Heartworms is mostly uninteresting.
