Mann's Horror Masterpiece, with Solid New Extras
on June 10, 2016
Posted by: ANDM
Verified Purchase:Yes
Michael Mann's 1986 crime/horror thriller Manhunter, is best known as the film that first introduced the cinematic world to cannibal killer Dr. Hannibal Lecktor (later portrayed as Hannibal Lecter by Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs). Making little fanfare during its initial release, it is now regarded as one of the best films in its genre, anchored by a great performance by William Peterson as Will Graham, a former FBI profiler brought out of retirement to hunt a serial killer called the Tooth Fairy, who slaughters whole families every full moon. Graham quit the FBI due to serious injuries he suffered when he caught Lecktor, and because his ability to assume the mindset of a killer pushed him to the edge of madness. Now he must seek out Lecktor in prison to get his advice on how to catch the Tooth Fairy...and to "pick up the old scent," as Lecktor puts it. Stylish and slick with a strong 1980s Miami Vice sheen (down to the very 80s soundtrack), Manhunter is very much a product of its time, but that in no way diminishes the craft with which Mann tells the story, or the suspense as Graham struggles to catch the Tooth Fairy before he claims another family. The Blu Ray features two versions of the film, the theatrical cut which looks very good, and a director's version, which is pieced together from many sources including old TV scans and in some places looks very rough. This new edition features fresh interviews with William Peterson and fellow actors Joan Allen, Tom Noonan, and Brian Cox, as well as Director of Photography Dante Spinotti, and many of the musicians who contributed to the soundtrack. A Mann commentary and several old featurettes are also included. If you're a fan of Manhunter a purchase is a no-brainer.

This USB 3.0 drive is on sale right now and is a great value, 32GB being a good amount of storage. The USB 3.0 transfers files much faster than previous version so if you need a flash drive it's a good value.

Solid Replacement Ink

HP deserves credit for moving back to using the 61 ink cartridge for their ENVY printers, instead of the fancier ones they were using a few years ago. Easy to install, it lasts for a decent amount of time, and if you're a MyBestBuy member, you can save 15% off the price. Good deal.

Worthy Soundtrack, but Not Iconic
on March 22, 2016

Veteran film composer Hans Zimmer has scored some of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters, including Christopher Nolan's acclaimed Dark Knight trilogy and the most recent Superman film, Man of Steel. For the upcoming sequel to that film (the first time Batman and Superman will on the big screen at the same time, not to mention Wonder Woman and other Justice Leaguers), he teams up with rising star Junkie XL for a good, solid score.
Zimmer brings back some of his Superman themes from Man of Steel, but he and Junkie are careful not to reuse anything from the Nolan films, as this is a new Batman in a different universe. The score bears many of the duo's trademarks, but aside from the previously mentioned Superman themes, nothing emerges as particularly iconic, which is a shame. Those of us old enough to remember watching the Christopher Reeve Superman or Michael Keaton Batman movies know how great the themes for those films were. Just a few notes of the John Williams Superman march or Danny Elfman's Batman put you in Metropolis or Gotham City, and it's too bad that this score couldn't deliver on that level. Nonetheless, it's enjoyable to listen to, and the deluxe version has some extra music and liner notes including an interview with the composers. Worth a purchase, but if Zimmer and Junkie return for the upcoming Justice League film, let's hope they come up with something truly memorable.

It Takes A Funnyman to Tackle This Serious Issue
on March 17, 2016

Director Adam McKay is best known for his comedies with Will Ferrell ("Anchorman," "Talladega Nights"), so by his own reckoning he probably was the last person expected to tackle adapting Michael Lewis's bestselling book about a handful of misfit investors who noticed the housing bubble in the mid-2000s and "shorted" the market in the years before 2008's crash. However, he proves to be the perfect choice-boiling down complex financial jargon in a way that is easy for a layperson to understand, often through the use of celebrity cameos like Anthony Bourdain or Selena Gomez.
The actors playing the investors (led by Christian Bale, Steve Carrell, and Ryan Gosling) are all excellent, and although McKay keeps the pace breezy and injects a lot of humor into the proceedings, this is an angry film, angry at the greed and stupidity of the banks responsible for the collapse, at the weakness of the government regulators to stop it, and the absence of meaningful journalistic scrutiny to let the public know what was happening. And the widespread pain caused by the crash is on full display (the irony that the "heroes" of the film are getting rich at the expense of most Americans is not lost on anyone). The Big Short was nominated for multiple Oscars and is rightly regarded as one of 2015's best films. The Blu-ray delivers excellent picture and sound, and a handful of solid extras (although a commentary would have been nice). Well worth a purchase.

Spielberg's Cold War Drama Not to Be Missed
on March 2, 2016
Posted by: ANDM
Verified Purchase:Yes
Legendary director Steven Spielberg's latest film "Bridge of Spies" is a welcome history lesson that is still quite relevant to today's society. Tom Hanks plays James Donavan, a successful lawyer in the late 1950s drafted to help defend a recently discovered Soviet Spy (Mark Rylance) and later, after an American pilot is captured in the infamous "U2 Incident," to travel to East Berlin to negotiate a prisoner swap. Donovan tries to uphold the values of the American legal system during a time where Red-Baiting made many fearful to do so, and to pull off a diplomatic coup in a charged environment with two superpowers on the brink of war.
Spielberg's direction invokes the great Frank Capra films of the past with the conviction that even one person, armed with reason and moral integrity, can make a difference. In that vein, Hanks channels his inner Jimmy Stewart, and Rylance is terrific as the Soviet spy (pulling off an upset by winning Best Supporting Actor at the recent Oscars). A strong technical presentation and a decent supplement of extras make "Bridge of Spies" well worth owning on Blu-Ray.

Oscar's Best Picture Deserves Better Extras
on March 2, 2016
Posted by: ANDM
Verified Purchase:Yes
The journalism drama "Spotlight" just won the Oscar for Best Picture and it's well deserved. The story of the Boston Globe's investigation of systematic abuse of young children by Catholic priests (and more disturbingly, the cover-up by senior Church officials) is riveting drama and not to be missed. This subject matter could be sensationalist or worse, exploitative, but director Tom McCarthy keeps the focus on the journalism and the efforts by the Globe's "Spotlight" team to connect the dots. Every performance in the All-Star cast (led by Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, and Liev Scrieber) is perfect and the slow burn builds to a devastating indictment of the indifference of suffering that does not let the Globe itself off the hook.
The only problem with the Blu-ray are the paltry extras, a handful of very short EPKs. A movie this good deserves at least one commentary and some long documentaries. But on the strength of the movie alone, along with good picture and sound quality, "Spotlight" is still strongly recommended.

Good Basic Mouse
on February 19, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
This is a perfectly adequate wireless mouse with basic functionality at a reasonable price. The scroll wheel is plastic and ribbed, so it can irritate your finger after a while, but at least it won't wear away like the rubber cover that some of Microsoft's more expensive ones do. If you need a wireless mouse and don't want to pay a lot, hard to go wrong with this one.

It's Not "Skyfall," but It's Still 007
on February 19, 2016
Posted by: ANDM
Verified Purchase:Yes
2002's "Skyfall" was a commercial and critical smash, raking in a billion dollars worldwide and widely considered to be one of the best James Bond films. 2015's "SPECTRE" brought back director Sam Mendes (the first director to helm back-to-back Bond films in decades) and most of the crew, and builds on the events of that film, with Bond on a secret mission that leads him to a shadowy organization behind most of the pain in his life (basically everything that has happened since Daniel Craig became Bond with the Casino Royale reboot). As the name implies, the classic evil organization SPECTRE from the Sean Connery era is back, along with its leader whose name I won't mention here. Given all of this, one could reasonably expect SPECTRE to top its predecessor, but unfortunately it can't pull off the trick. The story just isn't as tight, the ending is a bit weak, and Sam Smith's theme song is nowhere nearly as good as Adele's effort from the previous film. However, it still boasts some amazing set pieces, especially the first one in Mexico City, we get a new Aston Martin, and Bond's new supporting cast (led by Ralph Fiennes as the new "M") are all solid in their limited roles. Like the film itself, the extras on the Blu-Ray are paltry compared to "Skyfall" (no audio commentaries as opposed to the two we got previously), but the technical presentation is excellent. If you're a Bond fan, it's an easy call, and you know you'll pony up for the double dip if MGM ever releases a deluxe version.

The Revolution Will Be Televised
on January 18, 2016
Posted by: ANDM
Verified Purchase:Yes
The USA network has been known for quirky, competent and pleasant original shows like Burn Notice, Pysch, and Monk, but it takes a big step towards joining AMC, FX, and HBO in providing groundbreaking entertainment with this new show. Elliot is an emotionally troubled but very intelligent computer programmer working for a cybersecurity company. When one of their clients (the "Evil" Corp) is hacked, Elliot stumbles into a world of shadowy hackers (led by Christian Slater) trying to bring down Evil Corp-with Elliot's help. Clearly influenced by recent events like the financial crisis, WikiLeaks, and the Snowden leaks Mr. Robot is a show of this time, and unlike anything else on TV. It's a dense show that benefits from multiple viewings, and is visually spectacular, so it's perfect to own on Blu-Ray. The extras are a bit skimpy (some audio commentaries would have been greatly appreciated), but the show itself is more than enough to recommend. Pick it up as soon as you can.
