I can't explain how disturbed I was to watch this movie. The way the sets were changed - like a play - torn down & rebuilt right before my eyes as the film evolved.
The film suffers horribly by the self-indulgent Director, Joe Wright. His 'aren't I so clever and cool' approach to the telling of this story of two horribly selfish people and the lives they uncaringly destroy, is marred beyond repair.
Re-shrink this DVD if you have it & give it to someone you hate for Christmas. Then giggle.

Two young boys form a friendship on opposite sides of a fence. The boy on the outside of the fence is the young son of an officer in charge of the people on the inside of the fence.
This is a beautiful, yet heart-wrenching story of what can never be allowed to happen again. All I can say, without spoiling the plot, is everything in this film was done right - nothing heavy-handed - just a great film.

For whatever reason, I cannot say the name of the political party which was led by Adolf Hitler. That being said:
The Book Thief is a warm tale told surrounded by near unbearable fear and incredible danger. The young Liesel, played by Sophie Nélisse, is impeccably played. Her painful introduction in this film - the loss of her little brother, her mother giving her away sets the stage for what might have been a complete tragedy.
Geoffrey Rush is stellar as her new "Papa". Emily Watson brings a new definition to "bicked witch" but does a beautiful turn-around as her new "Mama".
There is so much involved in this story, all I can say is buy this DVD, bring it home and go potty - 'cause you won't want to leave your seat until it's all over!

It's interesting to note that when Cleopatra's sarcophagus was found - hieroglyphics were still a mystery. So, some Bozo thought "What a cool box, Dude!" and emptied its contents down a sewer. Later (too late) it was discovered that the Bozo flushed Cleopatra!
This motion picture was one I saw as a boy and I was mesmerized by how huge, yet personal, it's effect was on me.
We could talk about it's place in Cinematic History, or Elizabeth Taylor (or her purple eyes) and Richard Burton, but to what avail?
In the end ANY film's worth is measured simply by it's effect on the individual.
So, is this beautiful 2-Disc, 50th Anniversary Edition worth the pittance asked? DUH!

No toy. Could have got the Blu-Ray/DVD/UV WITH the toy - but no. Buy the movie - practice throwing the toy at people. Giggle. No. Both are fun. No. Keep the Blu-Ray even if you don't have a Blu-Ray player! Why? So you can have the TOY and GIGGLE! Yes.
