I was really excited for this album after seeing Straight Outta Compton as I am sure many people my age were, but it doesn't deliver. I was hoping for more of the classic artists associated with Dr. Dre and maybe some collaborations with current west coast artists. There are a lot of new voices and new talent, but I just wasn't blown away. There are a couple of tracks that I really like, but overall it is a fair effort. I would only recommend this album to hard core fans and completists.
If you are reading this review, chances are that you already have or have heard this album and you are upgrading your copy. If that is the case then you know what you are getting is an instant classic. For those new to old school West Coast Gangsta rap, you probably recently watched Straight Outta Compton and have new interest in Ice Cube as you should. To fully enjoy this album you should also be familiar with Public Enemy's music because while the lyrics are all Cube, the musical direction on this album was heavily influenced by Public Enemy's production team The Bomb Squad who produced most of the album. Chuck D and Flavor Flav also guest on 2 songs. The content of the songs are straight street knowledge with some humor added in. After this album Ice Cube went back to the West Coast G-Funk style but this album is absolutely a must have.
Third Eye Blind is far too underrated. I think they lost some luster because their second album wasn't as filled with radio hits as their first. However, they bounced back with 2 more solid releases prior to this album. This album retains the 3EB sound with some new musical influences present. My favorite song right now is Back To Zero, this song could have been a hit in 1986 and should be one today. If you liked Out of the Vein and Ursa Major, run out and buy this CD or buy the download and see them live. They still deliver.
I have been a long time Scott Weiland fan. His solo albums have been uneven with bouts of brilliance and some throwaways. This album isn't like that at all. It is solid all the way through. He even tries on some new styles for him. Circles is my favorite song on the album. Very unique style for him.
When people heard that Chris Walla left, they were worried. Worry no more. This album is well worth your time and effort. Great music and heartbreaking lyrics and melodies.
Ryan Adams doesn't disappoint in his return to a rock sound. It has a mid 70's vibe to it a la Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The lyrics, musicianship, songwriting, and production are all top notch on this album. One of the best albums of 2015 in my opinion.
