Heck if I can claim to be an expert on water filters for refrigerators. When it was time to replace my old filter, I searched for option. Samsung put out its own replacement, and I found a more generic brand for a lot cheaper. I have never tested the content of the water coming out of the fridge using different water filters. Nor have I compared the taste of the water using different water filters. (I have well water.) So, the question became would I pay more for a water filter designed by Samsung or pay less for a water filter made by someone else. I felt more comfortable buying one from Samsung. I've been happy with it so far.

I've read that metal fans either mellow out as they age or increasingly like heavier stuff. The theory is that rarely does teenager you listen to the same stuff as middle-aged you. You don't throw everything out as you age, but rather your tastes evolve. I'm in the camp that is trending heavier. There are plenty of death and black bands that I just can't get into musically/vocally never mind lyrically. Zhrine, though, to me is a good entry into the world of death and black. True fans of death and black may find this too mellow, but those looking to broaden their tastes should check this out.

I'm not a fan of black metal as a whole. I love early Opeth, and I have all the Agalloch albums, but that was as far as I went. The theme of Opeth and Agalloch, in my opinion, is a change in melodies, and that change made them palatable to me. Departe has melody changes, but less of them. Consequently, I'm working on truly enjoying this. I know that "experts" in this genre agree that this is a spectacular album. I hope that repeated listens will enable me to accept that opinion.

Others more knowledgeable may know of other comparisons, but it seems that the most often made comparison to Russian Circles (RC) is Pelican. I didn't initially like Pelican (my first real exposure to an instrumental-only band), but they grew on me and I now have all of their albums. I knew RC was out there, but I never gave them a chance. This is their first of six releases, and this is the only one I own. I can't speak for their other releases, but this one is great! To me it is a heavier Pelican. I hope they keep this edge as I progress through their other albums.

I became a fan of Cave In with their Jupiter release. I subsequently purchased their later releases as they came out and also went back to their earlier releases. I'm not sure how I kept overlooking this release. Cave In is a band that has run the spectrum of metal to hard rock to back. I understand that all of their styles will not be pleasing to all listeners. This release is most similar to Antenna, which is logical. If you like Antenna you'll like these six songs. I prefer their more aggressive releases, but this is good for a change of pace.

I don't think anyone can quibble that this ink is preferred for your printer. Maybe "generic" inks will be just as good, but you can't argue they are better. I believe the real debate is whether you're better off buying ink that costs about as much as a new printer would cost. I ultimately decided that I'd rather pay for the ink than a new printer. My well-thought out reason? I was too lazy to (a) set up a new printer, and (b) figure out what to do with my old printer.

I grew up in rural America just before the internet reached most people (at least in rural America). My friends and I always tried to discover bands. As I recall, I can take credit for Alice in Chains and Fear Factory. Anyways, another friend tipped me off to Pearl Jam "Ten," and I've been a fan ever since . . . at least through No Code. Yes, I have all of their studio albums, and I might even listen to one of them once a year, but the band no longer does it for me. I see no reason for a current Pearl Jam fan not to buy and enjoy this album. And I don't mind it at all when I listen to it. Pearl Jam's more "current" releases just don't seem to make it off my shelf.

Heck if I truly understand the different labels thrown around metal. The two I've most commonly seen placed on Sylosis are melodic death or metalcore. As I understand things, being metalcore is no longer cool, and that might partly explain why I never jumped on Sylosis's bandwagon. I think this is a 5-star album on musicianship, especially when compared to other metalcore acts. But for me, maybe for the reasons listed above, it isn't better than a 3-star. So I split the different and gave it a 4. I hope (and think) that this will become a legitimate 4 after repeated listens.

I first heard Mastodon with their release of the single March of the Fire Ants. I was immediately hooked. Future albums came, and they slowly changed their sound to sound more and more like hard rock. Yes, the change was gradual (and Crack the Skye is an amazing album), but I think this album pretty much gets them there. Then again, I'm not a music reviewer by trade. That is not to say that Mastodon won't or shouldn't appeal to metal fans, but it is a lot different from Remission and their other early releases.

I've read that Intronaut should be assessed before and after their change in singers, but I don't know if that is entirely fair. Intronaut started out as an aggressive band often compared to an early Mastodon. Since the change in singers, they have tended to be more jazzy, if you can ever use jazz to describe something in the realm of metal. This latest album is a continuation towards this direction. It may not be as heavy as a lot of metalheads would like, but if you can appreciate certain hard rock bands, and appreciate spectacular musicianship, pick up this album.
