I purchased this printer because I was told the cartridges lasted a very long time. They do not! The printer is not even used that often which leads to another problem. The head needs to be cleaned a lot. With what I pay for cartridges it's less expensive to just have copies made.

Don't buy this printer

I'm sure this printer has some great features (I loved that it offered copies, scanning, etc.), but unfortunately, I spend all my time dealing with printing problems. A printer should, uh, print!
First, let's talk about the ink cartridges. The Epson review boasts that the dual black cartridges make it so the consumer spends less, and buys printer cartridges less often. Yeah, right?! If any cartridge is empty, the printer will not print AT ALL. Every single cartridge has to be installed and have available ink. For example, let's say I want to print a one page document, and I have a full black cartridge -- I can't print because the other black cartridge #the dual cartridge# is empty. Same with colors, even when printing black. If I want to print a one page document in black, but my cyan cartridge is empty, forget it.
Second, I get a lot of printing errors. The error I repeatedly get is that the printer cartridges are not recognized. I've seen a lot of help sites say that it because the cartridge isn't an authentic Epson cartridge, but I'm here to tell you, I have nothing but authentic EPSON cartridges, and they still frequently get "not recognized" errors.
Third, let's talk about print quality. The default print setting is for "text." However, I can't use that setting #even for mere text print jobs# unless I want a big mess on my page. Unless I change the setting every time to the top-quality, text and photo combined, my text print comes out obscured in 3-4 lines. I have tried re-aligning it. I've tried different types of paper - that doesn't help. I've tried reinstalling the drivers. I have tried every suggestion on the trouble-shooting and help boards, but nothing has helped, except for changing the setting to text + photo every time. 3-4 lines of text always look like they are printed in backwards italics.
Save your money, and save your sanity, and find another printer.

Does what I need it too. Good machine! wi-fi works good. I'm able to use my laptop or tablet from anywhere in the house. Had for 3 years with no problems.

We love this printer. It prints out crisp and clean. I love the fact that you change only the ink that you are out of. Not the entire colors because one color ink is out.
I would recommend this to a friend!

A Mixed Bag

In the time I have owned the Epson 520, I have been very impressed by its scanning capabilities (including the Epson software), but less impressed with the performance of the machine's most basic function, printing. Scanning hard copy documents into pdf files is where I have given the machine a real workout, by now easily reaching into the thousands. The reason for this is, early on, I decided to move away from maintaining hard copy files (with the associated demands of filing cabinet space) and move toward a completely electronic filing system on my laptop's 500 GB hard drive.
However, I have been less satisfied with the printing function, something I consider to be the "sine qua non" of judging whether a machine like this one is satisfactory where the basics are concerned.
Certainly, for the most part it produces a good image on various kinds of paper, including photo paper.
However, early on I started to notice that all my prints were coming out slightly skewed - the upper left side of the printed material was always closer to the top of the paper than the upper right side. This also meant that, as I looked along the left margin of the printed material, it got closer and closer to the left edge of the paper the closer it got to the bottom of the paper.
This means that if I were to take each copy and use it as an original for the next copy - and repeat that process several times - ultimately the printed material along the left margin would begin running toward (and finally off) the copy paper on the bottom left side.
It appears this may be caused some fault in how the paper is being drawn from the stack of unused paper and fed into the machine's printing mechanism.
This is not acceptable.
Not being able to properly diagnose and remedy the problem myself, I believe I am destined to have to put up with this deficiency until I can find a replacement unit that will serve my needs (especially including scanning) without having this fault.
