Nearly my worst experience with a printer
on October 4, 2012

Consistently fails on me. Refuses to connect if it wasn't on before the computer was on. Coupled with its occasional power-down, it becomes a hassle to simply scan, which is my primary use for it. Further, on those occasions where I need to print, it can be connected to the network and it still can't be accessed. I personally do not have a working disk drive, so I must download all setup files from the Epson website, which is near impossible because I don't know which files to download (rather than being able to get all of them at once in a single download). When I do download the files and run the setup, it tells me it doesn't have required files and needs the installation disk. Won't scan or print if ink is low.
I attempted to print something just before this review, and when turning the computer off and back on didn't work, I attempted to update the drivers using Epson's own provided driver package for the NX420 (ironically named, I think). The driver setup didn't have those mysterious required files, and upon ending itself, it removed the printer entirely from my computer.
I will not be purchasing another Epson printer, and likely not another Epson product if this is the type of frustration I must deal with. I will likely look elsewhere next time I'm on the market for a printer. If you're looking for a simple wireless printer or scanner, avoid this angry nightmare like you owe it money.

This is the worst printer I have ever purchased. It wastes ink on startup, the paper jams constantly, it feeds the paper crookedly, the wireless is unreliable, the setup is not as plug and use as it advertises itself to be. overall, very annoying, very disappointing, a very big waste of money. I wish I could return it!

The NX420 is not as great as other Epson products

For the most part as a printer/scanner, it does OK. It produces prints that are color-close and the scanner picks up all but the smallest information on the hard copy, but for color correctness, there are better Epson models to be had. Been through the color profiles, calibrated the computer as well as the printer, done all the necessary color management exercises.
Now for the WiFi issue - in the two years I've had this printer, I have tried to sync it with three different WiFi systems and it has never worked. Have spent hours (mostly waiting) for tech to try and get around the problem. Either gives me a "weak signal" message (the modem was usually about 5 - 10 feet from the printer) that won't allow it to sync or else "incorrect password" which is just bunk. Yes, they were case-sensitive and I do know how to work the keypad...
The whole reason I bought this model was for wireless printing... but I've kept it mostly because trying to resell it and buy a different printer was going to cost me more money than I was willing to lose just for wireless printing.

Epson Stylus NX420 All-in-One Printer

Due to upgade to Windows 7, I reinstalled my Local Area Network router, and reinstalled the WIFI that this printer has used in the past. The original CD for the printer has been replaced by an online download from Epson, and it went OK and the printer does great. Now I have to figure how to get the Scanner in this all-in-one printer.

Copy doesn't work

The copy feature doesn't work on my all-in-one. It seems to try to copy as a photo instead of a document and prints only a small portion, takes forever, uses up color ink for b&w documents. I've tried rebooting, etc. to no avail. Guess I will have to purchase a real all-in-one.

Bought Two - Scanner Fail Issues - Ink Problems

Epson NX420 all-in-one:
Our family purchased two of these printers from a local office chain store. We bought one for college and one for an overseas assignment. I will call them Unit #1 and Unit#2.
Unit #1 went to college with my daughter. Within the first semester, it stopped scanning and had to have the software reloaded. After that it has worked okay, with occasional Epson ink recognition issues.
Unit #2 went overseas with my husband while he was on assignment for two years. It worked fine those two years. Upon returning home, he repacked it in its original packing and box. When we tried to set it up back in the USA, the scanner bed would not function. It emits this "tick, tick, ticking" sound, tries to move the scanner bar, but cannot and finally gives up with an error code of E2. It also does not recognize its own Epson ink cartridges when replaced.
I tried reloading the software and even updating the drivers to no avail. With some finagling, we can get it to print, but that is all - no copy or scan functions working now. The E-2 error code prevents us from using the front panel and all operations, including changing ink must be done via the software on my Windows 7 64 bit PC and it is not recognized even though we only use Epson ink cartridges.
Pros: Good Wi-Fi, Good Print Quality Cons: Multiple scanner failures, won't recognize replacement Epson ink

I would not recommend

I bought this printer because it had wifi capability. I have a Mac. It worked really well for the first few months with the MINIMAL amount of printing required in our home. After a few months, we kept receiving error messages basically telling us that the printer was not compatible with our computer. We gave up on it (clearly, we don't print much), but one day it randomly started working again. Great! However, on my next print job, the ink cartridge ran out (NO IDEA HOW!) This has literally probably been used a total of 6 times, and now I can't even scan with it (due to the ink being out). I am so frustrated with this printer I could scream. Who has time to deal with this? I do not recommend.
