Software nightmare
on October 16, 2012

Problems loading software from the disc and the so called 'solution' provided by HP, the absence of any useful book on the device and the jargon on the internet help pages made the whole process of setting up this printer a nightmare. It does now work... after a fashion, but the idea of using it as a wireless backup to a second computer has been dismissed. I still don't know how to change the printer back to work on the original computer after the second computer has used it...so I just don't use it. I bought this printer because my previous HP machine... bought six years ago and still in daily use, was and is excellent. Sadly the build quality of this new machine does not compare. I am somewhat disappointed.

Cant Scan, Fax or Copy

Purchased in July 2011, and within 7 months had warning message machine couldn't Scan, Copy of FAX. Tried all the trouble shooting tips etc, but eventually HP agreed to change the machine as this was a HardWare Issue. A New Machine (as promised) was received and set up without any issues. 4 months later this machine develops exactly the same problem, but this time the display panel also shows a bulb warning light. We speak to HP Customer Care but they refuse to change this machine as the warranty on the new machine runs from the date of the old machine. We have never used Fax, and dont think we have Scanned or Copied more than 5 items with this machine, only use it for printing from the computer. But the day we do need to Copy or Scan the facility would not be available to us. Is this a reoccuring problem with this machine/model?

the printing side is o.k., but the rigmarole that is required to scan documents is a joke. why is it necessary to do two operations? having scanned the item it should then automatically be stored/saved in the designated location instead of me having to tell the printer what to do a second time. please do something about this in future models. thank you.

Best Printer ever

Very easy to set up. Colour printing fabulous. Enjoy the copy, scan and fax features. Wireless works like a bomb, no need to hook up computer to printer with cables getting in the way. Printer safely placed away in one room and you can print from anywhere in the house. Sturdy printer, user friendly and the best buy I've made.

Worse than poor.

I fit were possible to give this product no stars I would have done. It's slow, it jams, it took days to setup. (Literally days.) The connectivity is terrible and confusing whether via wi-fi or the USB cable; the software is poorly designed and intrusive; if one cartridge runs out or fails it stops the whole thing working; it's fiddly to access paper jams that need fixing; it's autonomous in the worst ways (it randomly printed part of a document a burnt sienna colour); and it is difficult to find ink for. It is truly a woeful piece of machinery and I urge you not to be tempted by the price tag as I was. I got what I paid for.

HP 4500 printer - first impressions

installation was easy - up and running in a few minutes.
I have some concerns about paper feeding. A colleague who had recently bought the same printer told me he had regular problems with paper jams. I have so far printed about 10 pages and have already experienced a paper jam that was reported on the computer printer status and screen and on the printer panel but all three pages printed OK and the message went away. I have only printed three documents so far so this is a small sample but I have never had a paper jam on my previous printer in the last 5 years.

The colour cartridge that came with it never worked at all, black one printed 4 times and stopped. Sometimes after stand by mode I have to disconnect from mains to get it working again. Only had it two weeks, will phone and complain when I have time.
