Poor ADF

The automatic document feed consistently jams for any paper of greater weight than flimsy. 20 and 24 pound paper has to be bent at the leading edge to allow any feed. The print speed is very slow. Other than those significant issues, the machine is acceptable.
Cons: add a con

I have owned several All-In-One printers and this model by Canon, the MX870 is by far the most superior. It is durable, quite while running, and very easy to use. When printing from the computer it shoots out 8x10 color photos and documents very quickly, in seconds. The only drawback I have experienced is in making copies using the machine as a stand alone. The memory capability causes this feature to be extremely slow. I almost dread having to make copies for this reason.

For the first time a reliable scanner with a great ADF. Wow, this has saved me so much time. I also love the wireless set-up from the device where a PC is not required.
Pros: Easy Setup, easy to use, adf reliable
Cons: slow start-up

Short Life

Loved this printer to start with, but after only 5 months it's on the fritz and needs repairing. My old i550 went for years and is still going so this MX is not a reliable printer in my experience.
Pros: great features
Cons: reliability

Great All-in-One

This is my first all-in-one. Detailed instructions made set-up easy. Has worked without any problems. Duplex printing and scanning is a big plus. Easy to switch between B&W and color. Bypass is very handy when using color paper. Qualifiers: I use a USB connection so can't comment on wireless feature, haven't used fax, most printing/copying is B&W documents so have little use of color. Others have noted that the first page is a little slow to print, which is true, but as light user this is not a problem. Overall, a very good machine.
Pros: never jams, duplex printing/scanning, automatic feed

Love this Printer !!!

I just love this printer. My wife & I are completely wireless in our home. We both have Apple Mac Laptops and have been pulling our hair out using a different vendor's All-in-One Scanner/Printer...In desperation we bought the MX870 and what a difference. We use my wife's Droid 2's Hotspot connection & printing is a dream...Scanning is wonderful. Finally I can put 10 pages or more in the hopper & scan them to a single pdf to my Laptop so I can email it...Love this Printer/Scanner...BUY one...!!!
Pros: reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors, easy to use

Replacement for MX830

Generally pleased although there are three comments I'll make. I miss the button control on the unit for switching between rear and bottom feed trays. Also the ink cartridges on the MX870 are about 1/3 smaller than my former unit. With ink priced at a ridiculous level, this doesn't help. Colors on previous machine were better as well.
Pros: reliable, Easy Setup, wifi network
Cons: Slow Print Speed, High Ink Consumption, high cost of consumables

Nearly perfect!

I was looking for a multi-function machine that could:
- print color and double-sided
- scan
- fax
- serve multiple computers wirelessly
- serve both Mac and PC without glitches
I got this printer after reading the reviews and I have not been disappointed:
- Setup took a little time, but half of that was just removing the packaging - the printer was extremely well packed/protected
- Connecting the printer to the house wireless was easy, as was connecting both my Mac and my PC to the printer. The machine wakes up every time one of my computers goes on, and then it goes back to sleep if it's not needed.
- I was amazed at how fast it prints - even double-sided (understanding that there's a little dry time between sides)
- Duplex scanning is awesome - and it's the feature that put this printer over the top relative to others I was considering.
I haven't tried printing photos, so I can't comment on that. I also haven't tried faxing with it yet - it's a rare need.
My only criticism (and it's a very small one!) is that the main paper tray is pretty shallow - the machine is very compact so I wouldn't've minded it being a little taller in exchange for a little more paper capacity.
Well done Canon!
Pros: Compact Design, Easy Setup, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use, duplex faxing/scanning!
