Great value, great performance

I am a printer service technician for a competing brand so I know pretty much what to look for and, more importantly, what to watch out for in replacing a printer. So, when that time arrived, I looked at, examined and read many reviews of this and other units before deciding to buy Canon. By far, it exceeds expectations of quality for pictures and for various kinds of reports. Yes, it uses ink (isn't that what a printer does?) but the cost of the cartridges is less than that of many competing brands. For the time that I have been using the MX870, no cons.

Beware...Networking Gremlins Exist
on November 15, 2011

Had this printer for 8 months. Magically the printer is having all sorts of networking problems. Direct connect or Wireless. Gets IP address from router, able to print but eventually Cannons own software cannot find the printer even when you can ping the device with the Command facility. How can I see the printer and print a test page but Cannon's utilities cannot. I can print test pages but cannot scan a document to a computer on the network. Printing eventually goes away as well.
I have completely reset my network, firmware updates to all routers, driver updates, etc. Dumped a huge amount of my personal time into troubleshooting this problem. Problem continues to exist.
I believe you're purchasing a 12 month product that you will need to replace.
Cons: networking issues

I LOVE this printer!

I used to buy another brand of printer and was perpetually dissatisfied but I thought it was just the way printers were. I thought I had to spend a lot of money to get one I would be happy with. So when I bought this one my main criteria was ink efficiency, low ink cost and good reviews. Every day I find new things to love about this printer. The hinged lid shifts height to accommodate scanning from a book (I discovered this by accident!). The print door opens automatically when you print (again, a happy accident). Print quality is excellent, though printing speed is a touch slow. The dual paper tray makes using different papers a breeze and the rear tray makes quick media shifts painless. The user interface is intuitive. I haven't had to access the user manual yet, despite tackling a number of different printing projects. The multi-page feed tray is forgiving (I've fed pages through that had text scotch-taped to them - not recommended, I'm sure) and resists jams. It's unobtrusive in appearance and its most delicate parts have covers that fold up to protect them which is handy with my curious toddler always nearby. It seems that the designers took ambitious, creative, clumsy, impatient people like me into consideration when creating this printer. I honestly can't think of anything I would want it to do that it doesn't. Okay, maybe cook dinner.

Great All-In-One

Love this multifunction. Upgraded from MX850 that I've had for years, which I loved. Debated, talked to sales people, read others research, went onto Consumer Reports... you name it I did the research. I am so beyond pleased with this printer. The wireless function works great and it even scans wirelessly! I didn't even think that would be possible from what I had heard. I use it in the house for personal and light office work. Photo quality is good. Only drawback, it sometimes takes a minute to print something, but once it gets going it's fast. If you are looking for a great all-in-one, and in particular are upgrading from your old MX850, this is the printer for you!
Pros: reliable, Compact Design, Easy Setup, durable, easy to use
Cons: Slow Print Speed

This is my second Pixma multifunction printer. The first one (Pixma MP780) gave me six hard-worked years in a home office. It was a flawless performer, and I did not hesitate to get the new Pixma MX870. So far it has met or exceeded the high standard set by the first one. Setup was simple, and the manual provides good guidance. I appreciate the easy two-sided (duplex) printing. Customizing the user settings is easy, too. The only caveat: a USB cable is not included. This was not a problem for me because I used the cable from the older machine, but it could be an unpleasant surprise for someone who does not plan to use the wireless connection.
Pros: Easy Setup, durable, Sharp Tones & Colors, easy to use
Cons: usb cable not included

I have now used this machine to fax, photo copy, scan, and print and I must say it does all these funtions with so much ease. I had it functioning within a half hour after I got it. The instructions were easy to understand. I am a big time scrapbooker and I love the quality of the pictures that come from the machine. I also do a lot of business at home and I love the ease and convenience of being able to scan and print materials for my clients. I definitely give this a big thumbs up.

I have owned several Canon printers since Canon leaped ahead of other brands in quality and customer service a decade ago. Each has been an improvement on the last, but all have provided great value. This model prints, copies, and scans faithfullly, the utility software is very good, and the choice of wired, wireless or networked is nice. I am using it in USB mode but will shift to networked mode eventually.
The color accuracy and resolution is very good for this price range.
I have not experienced the performance issues raised by some, and I have to wonder whether the selection of drivers may be a factor.
The only improvements one could reasonably hope for are a still better user interface, and inks that set after drying and do not bleed when accidentally exposed to water drops. In fairness, these problems exist with most inkjet printers, regardless of brand.
Canon's customer service is first rate. I have experienced this personally, as have several others whom I have assisted with technology.

The ink runs out constantly. i can't keep black ink in it and I wouldn't consider my volume high.
