Network Failure
on March 3, 2012

I've had this printer for approximately an year and have had nothing but trouble with printing/scanning on a network. Canon's ijnetwork software is completely unreliable when used in a Mac network environment. Other printers, utilizing the Bonjour communications, work just fine. Canon has issued several driver updates over the course of my ownership but the problem persists. They need to just replace ijnetwork with Bonjour and get on with it.
Pros: generally good print/build quality - when it works
Cons: useless on a network

Was dreading putting this thing together and setting it up.... but it was a snap... the "Getting Started" guide was well written, lots of pictures and easy to understand. I was done and up and running in less than an hour (and I stopped and studied portions at length!)
Pros: Compact Design, Easy Setup, Sharp Tones & Colors, easy to use

WIFI works well with MAC's. Written guide is over complicated, used recommended Canon website, So simple.
Packaging is excellent, print quality is acceptable. Device panel is over complicated, read the install guide and follow the steps. Have connected via WIFI with Apple I-MAC, MAC Book Pro and I-Pad. Large foot print, extra paper cartridige is a nice feature, quiet operation, Canon reputation is good, additional features tha tmay not be necessary. Serial number is difficult to find on unit,. Would purchase again below 100.00.
Pros: reliable, Easy Setup, durable, Sharp Tones & Colors, easy to use
Cons: Large Footprint, Heavy/Bulky, High Ink Consumption

Really like the MX870

We now have 2 MX870's in our house/office/work areas and our daughter has another Canon printer for school but it is not an MX870. We are very happy with the printers, we use them a lot for color photos (8X10 mostly) for my wife's art work portfolios and for my "advertizing" handouts for my work. Also print out own business cards and a lot of smaller photos and LOTS of B&W media. The new ink/ink supply system does use a lot less ink. As we do a lot of photo printing, we get pretty picky with the output quality and considering everything, we are very pleased with the printing. As can be expected, there is the occasional need to "clean" the print heads and all but the machines are holding up pretty well. I go thru about a case of B&W paper every 6-8 months, the other unit goes thru a number of reams in that time. We do hundreds of 8X10 color photos a year and some hundreds of pages of "business card" stock (most of it double side printed in color) each year. Our daughter loves her unit too, but mostly school work stuff.
Yes I would and we do recommend this printer and other Canon products a lot as we have both still and movie equipment. I have had Canon cameras since the late 1960's and they have always been great. Great price, quality, great output and if per chance there is a problem (rare) Canon has been very helpful in getting t hings back in order.
Pros: reliable, Easy Setup, durable, Low Ink Consumption, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use

Very good all in one - just one issue
on June 16, 2011

I use this all in one all of the time and I love it. The only issue I faced is when changing ink. The ink pack didn't include the big black one. When I loaded the new inks in, it didn't like that the big black one was empty and was blinking red. No problem except it won't let you past the error to get to any other functionality. I needed to scan but could not beause of this. Had to drive out to get a cartridge. Should still be able to use the other functions if you are having an ink issue.
Pros: reliable, Easy Setup, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use
Cons: can't use scanner if there is an ink issue

Best printer and easiest to set up I have ever seen. It can print and scann both wireless and as a part of the wired network.
Install the drivers one time and forget it.
Pros: reliable, Easy Setup, Sharp Tones & Colors, easy to use
Cons: ink tanks "5" costly
