NICE!

Just bought this to replace another printer. EASY setup. I got the wireless connection hooked up, no problem. I have only been using computers for 3 years and I am definitely an amateur. I do lots of craft projects and I really like the ability to feed heavier papers from the rear. I definitely feel that I got a lot of bang for the buck with this printer.
Pros: can handle different weight papers

Ink Cartridge

I like my Canon MX870 extremely. The performance is excellent. the quality of print is superb. It has all the features I need in a high quality printer. My only issue is with the ink cartridge. The ink cartridge has five colors and I think it should contain more of the colors that are used the most like "black and red". These colors run out faster than the orders and I now have several of the order colors pilling up at home while I continue to buy more cartridges just to get the black and the red.
I had the same problem with old printer and when that printer stopped working and I had to buy a new one, I had half a dozen cartridges collecting dust at home which I could no longer use. These six catridges cost me more than $200.
Pros: reliable, Compact Design, Easy Setup, Lightweight/Portable, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use
Cons: High Ink Consumption

Excellent All-in-One

I previously owned the MX-850 (for which I could not get the fax to work properly, even with Canon technical assistance) and the MX-860 (which I did get working with Canon technical assistance). The 860 was replaced due to a lightning strike. I installed the 870 as a wireless network printer without technical assistance. It was a dream to install and is a dream to use. I am a volume user due to volunteer work for two non-profits in my retirement. This machine fills the bill nicely.
Pros: reliable, Easy Setup, durable, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use

Poor UI. Limitations. Expensive Ink
on August 4, 2011

Good quality prints but:
Cannot select rear tray for paper source of 8.5x11 copies.
Cannot print 2->2 sided B&W. (Should work but doesn't.)
Difficult User Interface. Not intuitive at all. I have used much better copiers.
Ink tanks are even smaller than my last Canon and runs out fast. Ink is expensive.
Slow print/copy speed. Slower than my last multifunction Canon in same price range. That's not progress is it?
Pros: Compact Design
Cons: Difficult to use, Slow Print Speed, High Ink Consumption

I love this printer. It was extremely easy to setup and is just as easy to use. I love the duplex printing and being able to change the zoom to print larger or smaller pages. Thanks you for the best printer I have owned.
Pros: reliable, Compact Design, Easy Setup, durable, Low Ink Consumption, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use
Cons: Heavy/Bulky

I liked the MX870 so well I bought a second one. I found it extreemly easy to set up this unit on my wireless network. I only had a simple glitch in the wireless set up; which I quickly discovered how to correct. It set up rapidly with multiple computers that use different Operating Systems. All the functions are easy to use by simply selecting what one wants ( front, or rear tray, duplex or not, scan, copy, fax, print, ) from the computers via the Canon Solution Menue, or program print commands.and / or manually via the MX870 push buttons It is also easy to switch from one mode to another by simply clicking on a desired function. It also works well with a seperate OCR program that I use One can even preview before printing, It may take a short while to activaste the mode one desires, but once the delay is over, the action, be it printing, scanning, copying, or faxing is pretty fast. ( best seen with many pages) Ink usage can also be controlled and reduced by simply selecting the ink quality (For B&W letters fast is as good as high quality and much faster.) I don't do photos much and can only compare them to my screen, but they look good to me . As for ink quality .. one independant test lab selected Canon inks as the best ink of all. I 've used individual Canon equipment for years and found them reliable and cost effective
Pros: reliable, Easy Setup, Low Ink Consumption, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use, great item for the price
Cons: Large Footprint, Heavy/Bulky, High Ink Consumption, long delays before any actions

Total waste of time and money

It's performance is slow, it decides when it wants to print and when not.....printing orders has to be given several times before it reacts. It's wiFi connection is lousy...
It also has a cheap feel to it, especially the buttons.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

MX870...a work horse!
on February 10, 2012

I have been using the MX870 for over a year, in a SOHO setting with a landscape designer + two school kids. This printer produces quality output at reasonable speeds. All of the basic functions are flawless, if perhaps a bit unwieldy, at least until you get familiar with the work flow.
I am writing at this point because of, and to confirm the WiFi issue raised by numerous reviewers. Infrequently but out of nowhere the MX870 will lose signal, (go offline or not respond) and it is frustrating. WIN7 troubleshooting is of little help; it suggests you change the default printer to the Fax profile? Huh?
I did find a KnowledgeBase suggestion that has worked for me: power the printer off-on, and then do the same with your router. The printer queue gets right to work on any suspended documents, like nothing was ever wrong.
If only the pretty little blue WiFi lamp doubled as some kind of a re-set button...
