We purchased for our home office. We have light use. We scan, print and occasionally fax. It does all very well and the price of ink is reasonable. I would highly recommend this printer for the home or a small office.
Pros: has never jammed, scans are very good, cost is low, duplex printing and scanning, feeds pages for multi page scan, also scans on glass for books
Cons: user interface is cumbersome

I have a Canon ip6600D that was not printing correctly and an old scanner that would not work with Windows Vista due to lack of available drivers. I started looking for a new scanner and since my old printer was not working correctly (got it to work by cleaning the print head) I decided to go with the all in one unit since Canon has been such a good product for me, I selected the MX870 and have been very happy with the purchase. Scanner with duplexing works good, copy feature is fantastic with nice prints and fax. Scanning and printing can be a bit slow but for the price all features work great. Networking the printer was also easy and even got the Canon Easy-PhotoPrint to work with my Android phone. If you plan to use the iEEP application you must Set the WI-FI routers Encryption to WPA/WPA2 PSK using ONLY AES or TKIP but not both or the phone will not recognize the printer. Also set your routers Wireless optimization from 11N to 11 b/g/n mixed mode. Works great!
My old ip6600D picture prints have a little bit more color depth than the MX870 on side by side comparison but then again the old printer was designed to be a Photo printer.
Pros: reliable, Easy Setup, durable, easy to use
Cons: Slow Print Speed, slow to scan / delay

Awesome EXCEPT....

First of all I LOVE this printer... when it works. What I mean by that is that the wireless connectivity is very dodgy. Sometimes I can ping the printer but it shows offline and won't print. Sometimes after 5 minutes it starts printing and sometimes it never prints (in wireless mode). I've reinstalled it several times, and I've been working in the networking field for 15 years, so I'm pretty sure I've set it up correctly.
So if you are going to directly connect it to your machine, this is one of the best printers I've ever owned. If you plan on working with it wirelessly, I'd pass and maybe try another Canon model that doesn't have as many problems with the wireless connectivity.
Pros: fantastic printer, neat features like the tray will open if it's shut, quiet great picture quality easy to use
Cons: wireless connectivity, prints randomly on wireless setting
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Features keep coming

Set-up a bit complex (for wireless). I can print a multi-page document with duplex printing and print the envelope without touching the printer! I touch print, and the page eject door opens sliently. WOW. The features just keep on coming. I don't know about ink consumption, and cartridges are a bit pricey, but with such high quality printing, it's worth the cost.
Pros: Sharp Tones & Colors, easy to use, smooth operation

Glad I Waited For This Release

I love my new Canon MX870. When my old printer broke, I did not want to replace it with the same brand. The Canon MX870 was about to be released, so I decided to wait for it and I'm glad I did. It works great and it is cosmetically very beautiful. AND I also LOVE the CANON SUPPORT TEAM. They are very friendly, informed and helpful. It really says something when a company backs up their product with great support.
Pros: reliable, Compact Design, Easy Setup, easy to use
Cons: Slow Print Speed

Canon Rules!

After owning 2 printers in one month from the same major printer company, I returned them for the 870. Wow,what a nice machine. The wireless connected easily using the printer controls to find the router, then installed drivers on two laptops in 20minutes. Bam! I was printing. Everything about the Canon oozes quality. I love most of their electronics, and this confirms it.
Pros: Easy Setup, easy to use
Cons: Large Footprint

could not be happier

This printer was bought to replaces an older canon multi functional printer. Only because I needed a wireless setup for my computers. The setup was easy and all my computers hooked up to my wireless network on the first try. I haven't used it to all of its full programs, but what I have used so far is great. I have used other printers in past years, but have always come back to Canon. Canon printers seem to always give me good quality without hardware and software problems like the rest. The only problem that there was is you have to study the manual good before you set it up wireless.
Pros: reliable, Easy Setup, Sharp Tones & Colors, easy to use
I would recommend this to a friend!

Best Overall Printer

So maybe you're not an expert on Printers. Maybe you just need a great printer to do some office work, home tasks, school work, and misc., and oh yea you need it to be wireless so the kids can use it from their laptops. Look No Further than the Canon MX870. If you're reading this, you haven't decided just yet......Stop and go to the store with the lowest price and buy this All in One. Printing is great, Fax is perfect, Copies are exact, and it is a very nice looking unit to match and fits well on smaller shelves or desk tops. BUT what about the setup-Well let me just say that I am 47 and leave all the electronics up to the kids but I had this thing connected to our DSL wireless system in about 30 minutes to 3 different Laptops and Desktops. 30 Minutes only because you wait for the program to download. This may have been the best plug and play electronic I have ever bought. All I can say if I wasn't happy would I have taken the time to write all this. Canon has a happy customer in our family and unless you wanting your printer to perform nuclear tasks (which this may very well do also) this is a GREAT BUY!
Pros: reliable, Compact Design, Easy Setup, durable, Low Ink Consumption, Lightweight/Portable, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use, truly easy setup-really
I would recommend this to a friend!
