Poor Quality
on September 24, 2010
Posted by: Anonymous
I purchased this printer to replace another Multi-Function printer. Unfortunately, the copy and scanning functions do not capture accurate colors and it is not recommended as a scanner or color copier.
In addition, the printer seems to shutdown when not in use even though it still works as a copier. The only recourse when you receive a "printer not responding" message is to remove the power cord and then plug it back in again.
Sometimes only a partial page is printed.
It seems to be a nice printer when it works but the quality issues make it unusable. The fax does work very well.
Pros: nice fax, low price
Cons: hangs, only prints partial pages at times, scanner/copier innacurate, uses ink readily, poor device quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Best printer we have ever had

We have now had this printer for 3 weeks. It is undoubtedly the best printer we have ever had. The installation was incredibly easy (even for no technical people like us). The wireless connection is excellent to have.
Print speed and quality are excellent.
Pros: reliable, Compact Design, Easy Setup, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use
I would recommend this to a friend!

Good so far except can't scan
on May 23, 2010

I just completed set up and testing. The wireless access code hurdle was a bit tough but I downloaded the instruction document as described in the instructions and this allowed me to find the right code.
My only problem is that I have not yet figured out how to do wireless scan of a document back to the computer.

Loving the printer...

I have been very happy with the purchase of my Canon MX 870 printer so far. Compared to my last one with a different company, this printer is so much better and user friendly. I love having the two different paper trays, very handy since I make cards and envelopes and the back paper feeder is perfect for this. I have never owned a Canon printer before... but I have no regrets in getting this one.... the size is perfect, my other priniter was much larger and would not print about 3/4 of the time, it used a lot of ink, I have yet to replace any ink so far with the Canon printer which I bought the first of January... and I do use the printer often. Over all, I am very happy with this product, which is the reason for all of the star ratings... at least this printer prints for me... my other one would not... I would for sure recommended this to anyone.
Pros: reliable, Compact Design, Easy Setup, durable, Low Ink Consumption, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use

Functional AIO
on April 24, 2011

This is my first Canon purchase. Setup iinstructions over-complicate the process, which was really very easy. The machine is good quality, better than what I had before, and the photo editing features are as good as any higher-end photo printer/scanner. I do like the dual paper feed option. As an AIO the MX870 is lacking in a few areas that I find disappointing-
No character recognition for document scanning
No provision to create cover pagesfor faxing
No provision to create/save templates for fax/email
These can be compensated for through MS office or other such program, but I expected better stand-alone functionality as an All-in-One. I already miss the many useful features my previous AIO had.
Also I have not been able to print wirelessly from my iPhone yet, but there's probably an app for that.
Not the best selection for an office environment.
Pros: Easy Setup, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed

Super easy network setup. Duplex printing a definite plus. Prints a little slower than my older Canon printer, but its not a big deal. Bought Canon again because of the separate ink tanks. Over all...love the Pixma MX870!!
Pros: Easy Setup, Low Ink Consumption, easy to use, duplex printing
Cons: Slow Print Speed

so-so printer

Having owned this for several months now I would rate this on a scale of 10 about a 5.
It does scan well, and prints black and white very nicely.
It also has some nice features, such as allowing you to print from various cards and USB. It falls short in the photo department. You really have to tinker around with it to print larger photos, and for some reason the printer thinks a 4 X 6 is a 6 X 4 and to print out a simple photograph, and not only did it crop the photo it used two pages to do it. No wonder the ink set I bought came with 50 4 X 6 pages. That should make about 10 suitable photos.
It also eats a lot of ink printing pictures, so be warned.
If you are just going to print text or scan then it is a good printer and the black ink lasts a while.
But if you are interested in printing your own pictures look elsewhere.
Pros: Easy Setup
Cons: Large Footprint, High Ink Consumption, unreliable
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
