excellent value

I needed the MX870 for a home office. The business has not been launched yet but I have used all the features other than fax. It does everything very well, copying, printing, scanning, and all double sided. For SOME operations it's slow. Considering the price, that's a small penalty to pay for otherwise excellent performance. Setup was easier than the user manual would have you believe. The manual looks like you need to connect it with a USB cable, THEN set up the wireless. Not true. Just remove all the packing stuff, plug everything in, run the installation disc, and follow the routine. Done! (Assuming you have already set up your wireless network)
Pros: Compact Design, Easy Setup, Lightweight/Portable, Sharp Tones & Colors, some operations are fairly fast
Cons: some operations are slow

Don't buy this machine

Did not install easily or properly. Network function does not work properly. Keeps dropping the network. Many features just do not work, period. Fequently does not print documents, just gives error messages. Remote scanning does not work. Very, very slow when it does work. It is really just a bad machine. But it is low priced, that's probably why. You get what you pay for. This is not a good machine. Do not buy it. Buy something different.
Cons: Difficult to use, Slow Print Speed, Difficult Setup, unreliable
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Died after 4 months
on January 20, 2011

This printer was well priced and easy to setup on a combined wired/wireless network. It ran well, although a bit slow for four months. then it just stopped printing most colors. After cleaning the printhead and nozzles about 20 times, I called Canon who replaced the printhead. I received the new printhead very quickly, but this new one was worse. with it only black printed, and a bit of yellow. I am going to return it and try another brand. If you design your products to fail, your business will fail as customers will not support you. REALLY poor design of printhead/ink cartridge guarantees failure in less than a year.
Pros: east to setup
Cons: see commments below

AS A BUSINESS OWNER THIS IS THE BEST PRODUCT WE HAVE EVER PURCHASED. THE ONLY THING I HAVE QUESTIONS ON IS WHY DOES IT USE THE LARGE BLACK INK CART. FIRST AND THEN WILL NOT GRAB AND START USING THE SMALLER BLACK CARTRIDGE INSTEAD OF JUST STOP WORKING UNTIL YOU CHANGE THE BIG ONE. THERE ARE TWO BLACK CARTRIDGES. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN

FIX THE WIRELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
on June 3, 2011

I first have to say that I had a Canon MP830 that was a great printer. I purchased this printer as a replacement and loved it at first. However, I cannot get past the fact that wireless part of the printer will work. I show it's connected to the network, I reconnect it to verify, I cannot ping it, I cannot connect to it, I receive a printer not responding message, etc. Then if I follow the suggested instructions of: Turn off the printer, reboot your router, turn on the printer and then it works. I have so many devices that are on all the time and just work. This needs to be addressed! I can't give this higher than 1 star on satisfaction if I have to go through these steps every single day!!! If this part worked, it would be a 5 star printer!!!!!!!!
Pros: Compact Design, Sharp Tones & Colors
Cons: Difficult to use, wireless unreliable
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Not for Ubuntu 10
on December 3, 2010

I have always loved Canon printers (except for the price of ink); the quality of the prints is great. Their PIXMA series hasn't disappointed me! However, there is NO LINUX support provided by Canon - and it is hard to find that support from even Ubuntu (Linux for regular people.) I highly recommend this product for most other people, though.
Pros: Sharp Tones & Colors, love canon
Cons: no linux support, no ubuntu support
