amended report

Even thought I made a terrible mistake on my tax returned and it was not caught, and I therefore had to pay a lot of money to the federal and state government, I would still recommend turbo tax.
I will have to pay very close attention next time I file.
What's great about it: helpful
What's not so great: I made a monumental mistake on my original report, but it was not caught
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Takes the stress out of doing taxes on your own
on September 17, 2015

I always did our taxes myself, but when we bought a house I figured we should have someone else do it. Fast forward two years, and we still hadn't gotten the taxes done (now 2 years are due!# I was really stressing out about it! Our situation is fairly simple, I'm smart and educated, etc., etc., so honestly, it was just easier, faster and way cheaper to do it myself. I know we need to see a financial advisor and figure out what we need to do to maximize our deductions, but that would be something to put in place going forward. We're in that place where we earn too much to take deductions like student loan interest, but we live in a high cost of living area, so our dollars don't actually go that far, unfortunately. I'm just glad that I was able to use TurboTax to catch back up, get us a decent refund back #no sense letting the government continue to hold onto it!), and move on! I trust TurboTax and it really is super easy to use.
What's great about it: Walks you through everything
What's not so great: None, really

Horrible

Will never, ever use this again. You linked a form 2106 for unreimbursed expenses, when all you need is the shedcule A. 2106 is a high risk form to the IRS! Really dudes!
What's great about it: NONE
What's not so great: Nightmare

2014 Edition Frustrating
on September 21, 2015

I tried to efile twice and was rejected both times. After the second rejection, TurboTax uploaded some changes and now my Federal return was $400 less than before. I realized at that point that the earlier Federal return amount was actually the current Federal return amount PLUS the State return amount. So I am disappointed in losing $400 in returns and have to REFILE with the State of Hawaii.
Turbo Tax before seemed to work okay (I have used it for about four years) but not for 2014.
What's not so great: Did the return wrong

a software suggestion

Please change how you address the filer of a return when someone is processing a return for a deceased person.
Cheerfully telling the person who has passed that he will get a refund or how you will help him find the most deductions is sad and disturbing. Once a filer checks that this return is for a decedent, address the filer and not the person who has passed. That was horrible to get through. Try a test return for someone who has passed and see what I mean.
Hope this helps some other grieving person get through the process.
What's great about it: usually very fast and easy
What's not so great: tough and unusual situation you all could easily fix

Navigating TurboTax
on September 23, 2015

The guidance which TurboTax gives is outstanding, until it comes to the review of errors, when they are simply pointed out with no explanation. For instance, I started drawing my pension on September 1, 1995. I had put Sept 1995, which was not acceptable, but why? I had to figure that one out by myself, which after a long day of taxes was somewhat frustrating. Couldn't it have simply said something like "Months must be spelled out.?" All in all, very positive.
What's great about it: I like the thorough interogations.
What's not so great: The few places where you get taken around in circles is frustrating.
