TurboxTax User for 10+years
on April 12, 2015

We've used TurboxTax every year for at least 10 years, including the one year we had a home business. We've only had to use customer support a couple times, and usually only because we were doing it so early in January to get it done and they hadn't updated yet. Love it, and recommend to everyone when they start talking about taxes.
What's great about it: Easy to use, walks you through EVERYTHING, no worries on math errors
What's not so great: having to go through things that didn't apply to me

Taxable scholarship paired with Roth IRA contrib.
on April 12, 2015

I am probably in a small class of users, but I thought I'd share something that might be a bug in case it could help improve future editions of the software. I am in graduate school and receive a fellowship (from the government, but I'm not sure whether that matters). I have been informed by the organization that gives me my fellowship that it is indeed taxable, but I don't receive a W2, 1099-MISC, or any other documentation about this income for tax reporting purposes from my employer (my university). Under the filing instructions, this taxable fellowship counts as earned income, so since it is more than the Roth IRA contribution maximum I am able to contribute maximally to my Roth without incurring penalties from the IRS. Without this fellowship, it is important to note, I don't have enough income to contribute to my Roth maximally. However, when I entered my fellowship under the "Taxable Scholarship" section of the program and entered my Roth IRA contribution, the program automatically applied a penalty, as if my taxable fellowship did not count as earned income for the purposes of the Roth IRA. Listing my income under Household income instead (HSH instead of SCH designation on form 1040A) fixed this. Last year when I had this same issue I called into the help center and the person helping me advised me that this was the best route to go (my only option without automatically incurring fees or filing by hand).
While this is an okay workaround, it would make matters much simpler for your users if it were fixed. Thanks for your time spent reading all of this!
What's great about it: Everything else went fine!
What's not so great: The software didn't recognize my taxable scholarship as earned income

Love Turbo Tax

I think that Turbo Tax is one of the easiest tax programs I have used. It is intuitive and flags potential errors quickly. The program is designed to walk you through each part of the return ensuring that you do not miss anything.
What's great about it: Walks you through each deduction, income, etMakes it nearly impossible to overlook a deduction or expense.
What's not so great: Takes some time to get through each part of the process.
