Another year with TurboTax
on April 6, 2015

Sometimes I get so frustrated when I've completed the inputs and start error check. This time there were 35 errors, mostly items that didn't automatically transfer to the state form. Why? However, I am comfortable with Turbo-Tax, having used it for 12 years or so. Audit Defense is wonderful. We were audited a few years ago when our 1099s were not sent in by the finance companies. Audit Defense took over. The only thing we had to do was wait for the clearance letter from the IRS. No money due. We will continue to use TurboTax, although I wish they would include efiling of a state return in the price. Also, I've tried to find a nickname five times now. I don't want a nickname.
What's great about it: The step by step process is great. Updates are easy. Movement between different sections (i.e. step by step to forms)
What's not so great: Amounts on W-2s and 1099s do not transfer automatically to state forms, which is really wierd.

I don't understand why when I hit the print option I get pdf mumbojumbo rather that the program printing the requested file. to print I have to save in pdf, open up Adobe, then open the saved file, what a hassel.

Pricey

I have itemized deductions but nothing overly complex; nevertheless, this was a confusing, time-consuming, and expensive process. I am still not sure that I fully realized the deduction for my home office. The fees for an additional state return and the cost to e-file state returns are simply outrageous and cannot be justified. I'll be looking for another option next year.
What's great about it: Convenient - able to complete at home
What's not so great: Poor instructions for home office deduction, expensive fees
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

Turbo Tax 2014

Overall, good product, very complete
I was told I would get some kind of rebate after purchasing the product in store, but no information is here.
Some terminology is hard to understand-- what do these terms and conditions mean? They need to be more in layman's terms.
All components should be included in the product-- I didn't care for additional advertising of options once I had started.
What's great about it: Very complete
What's not so great: some terminology is hard to understand

Getting more frustrating
on April 6, 2015

TT has been my choice for the last dozen years or so. But, its getting more frustrating to use it. Not so much because of the tax law, but because TT is getting much less flexible and less user friendly. For instance, if you start entering income as a W2 and realize in the process its actually a 1099R getting the W2 off the return is difficult. There needs to be an easy button that says that the W2 you started is a mistake. Click here to wipe it from the record. Maneuvering around the return to find things that have been omitted is not as easy as it once was. For instance. adding a payers id code after the initial entry has been completed, or while the program is reviewing the return is not user friendly.
These are just two of the issues I've had this year. I also think you should add more explanations for each of the elements. Most that I looked at this time were not very helpful.
I think I'll try one of the alternative tax software programs that are available next year.
What's great about it: As always, TT does a good job of handling the calculations in the return.
What's not so great: But, some of the steps are a little obscure.
