I have used TurboTax for more than a decade and keep returning to it since it is clear and easy to use including ample explanation notes. I like the ease with which one can go back or jump to different parts of the data entry.

Turbo Tax was very simple to use. I have been using it to complete our Federal and state taxes along with my sister-in-laws taxes for 5 years now. It is set up to prompt you for each step, asking easy to answer questions for the most part. There are help pages if there is something you are not sure applies or do not understand what is being asked. When itemizing, if you do not have everything ready, you can always close down, sort through your papers, and when you start up again, you are right where you left off. If you donate a lot of clothing or other goods to charities like Good Will or Big Brothers, there is a built in calculator that can determine a reasonable value of the donated items, although the categories used are not always intuitive. For medical expenses, there are a series of questions and places where information can be entered to see if you qualify for itemized deductions. Unfortunately, you have to enter in summary numbers (like total cost of prescriptions or professional services) instead of entering individual costs and miles and Turbo Tax summarizing them for you. I enter everything into a spreadsheet first, to keep track of costs and mileage. This part can be time consuming if it is not done throughout the year. Overall, It is still easier and less expensive than using an accountant (especially since you usually have to do all the work answering the same questions anyhow).
Great experience.
What's great about it: Fast, easy to do, walked us through everything.
What's not so great: Some parts were too thorough (had to complete parts that didn't apply once started)

Complicated for couples living in different states
on April 6, 2015

My wife and I lived in different states for part of last year. TurboTax recommended filing jointly, so I went ahead and did this. However, one of the states (Massachusetts) rejected the return since it was missing insurance information on my spouse, who did not live in MA at any time. It turned out that I had to file separately for MA taxes -- would have been nice if TurboTax had caught this to begin with!
After scouring the TurboTax message boards, I found that I had to create a "mock" married filing separately federal return by editing our joint return, then generate the separate state return based on this new "mock" federal return. Even after I did this, I found through trial-and-error that I needed to manually delete some forms for my spouse that TurboTax failed to delete on its own, even after multiple rounds of error-checking and revisiting all the step-by-step items. This process took 1-2 hours extra in the end, and could have easily taken longer.
Needless to say, this was a clunky experience. While most people will not encounter this situation, it is not entirely uncommon either. I still recommend TurboTax for simple situations, but I may be tempted to hire a real-life tax consultant in the future.
What's great about it: Simple step-by-step interface, error-checking, generally easy to use.
What's not so great: Can be stressful and tedious if you have an unusual tax situation
Pros: I moved, My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
