Pretty good.

Very good and thorough software. It was easy to navigate except in one situation... I would like to be able to skip straight to the standard deduction instead of all the questions that have to do with itemizing. Since I wasn't sure if the questions had to do with itemizing or just regular credits, I had to look up all these extra receipts unnecessarily.
That was my main con.
What's great about it: Easy to Navigate and fill in the blanks
What's not so great: No convenient way to skip to standard deductions in the "Guide Me" stage.

Last year I paid for Turbo Tax. Then I get billed to e-mail. This happened again this year. I tried to not pay for it so I could eliminate this problem, but it would not download so I sent for and paid for a disc with CA and Fed return information. I will be contacting you for a refund.
What's great about it: It is better than hiring a professional
What's not so great: I have no idea how to include various tax documents to complete all the information.

Had some difficulty with my NYS return. As a retired state employee, I'm not required to pay income tax on my pension. However, the program didn't recognize that fact and listed me as owing. Checking back through my files, I found that the same thing happened to me in 2009 when I stupidly wrote a check to the state for $73. Find it hard to believe that this could happen again and I'm beginning to question whether the program is worth the purchase price.

Delue vs Premier
on January 24, 2015

Stock and bond dividends and sales have been included in Deluxe version for years. Mot people need that. Very few people have rental income. That belongs in Premier with small business.
Please keep stock sales in the Deluxe version next year!
What's great about it: Excellent user interface, particularly Step-by-Step vs. Find My own way
What's not so great: Deluxe no longer includes stock sale???

Simple man's guide through government insanity

Multiple friends refuse to use the product. This is due to the fact that when purchased from a store you still need to pay for state e-file with a credit card or take the cost from the return at nearly double the cost of the credit card charge. This would be easily solved if the cost for one state filing was included in the original purchase price.
What's great about it: Fast, detailed, with the option to go straight to what you need.
What's not so great: Still separates state, requiring a credit card for state to be e-filed.

State refund form
on January 24, 2015

I chose to mail my state tax form, but the forms have "DO NOT FILE FORM NOT FINAL" on every freaking page. Same thing happened last year, could not figure out why this happens when the form IS final. I put a little love note on last year to my state franchise tax board and they accepted it. Fingers crossed the same happens this year
What's great about it: fast and easy
What's not so great: Forms for mailing have "DO NOT FILE, FORM NOT FINAL"

Only one problem

I started using TurboTax years ago when I realized that my accountant was simply inputting data that I had already prepared for him into a software program. I was doing the bulk of the preliminary work, and all he did was punch a bunch of numbers into his desktop. I saw an ad for Turbo Tax and decided that if he could punch in numbers, so could I, and save myself a dollar or two in the process.
Because of my past experience with the program, I have gotten into the habit of saving all receipts that relate to the broad categories of Income, Deductions, Expenses, etc. After December 31, I total the receipts at my leisure with a goal of having it completed by Jan. 31. These, together with my W-2s, 1099s, charge account statements and cancelled checks prepare me for the very easy process of answering the questions posed by TurboTax. As we used to say in my youth, "It's a piece of cake."
My one complaint is that the operating system on my desktop would not download the 2014 CD version of TurboTax, and it was necessary to go to the website and download directly from it. I didn't discover this until after I had gone to a local office store to purchase the Deluxe version for 2014. The minimum requirements for an operating system are not boldly printed on the jacket located on the store shelf, and I didn't realize the error until I tried to load it on my desktop. No major problem, but it was an inconvenience to go back to the store to return it.
What's great about it: I've used Turbo Tax for a number of years and have found it to be an extremely easy and effective way of filing.
What's not so great: The 2014 CD would not download on my desktop.

OMG what a relief. Turbo Tax makes it so easy

It's so nice to have an easy way to file taxes. I wouldn't ever go back to a tax preparer after using Turbo Tax. Maybe the others work too, but I have no desire to try them. Keep up your good work. Steph
What's great about it: helps organize paper work, checks your entries for errors, saves and files your info.
What's not so great: can think of any, sorry.
