the return was mostly simple

All was good until the time to e-file. Then due to a check box in the internet options that had to be accessed through the control panel not being checked. This halt of the turbotax software required a 50 minute phone call to tech support.
All was resolved and everything has been filed.
What's great about it: I like using this product year after year
What's not so great: had problems with the filing of the state return.

Better than hand preparing.

If you are comfortable doing your own taxes then TurboTax will be a step up in terms of convenience. If you have all your paperwork ready, you can get through the return quickly. It also helps guide you if you're dealing with a new situation like HSA accounts. I also like that it has info on hand as you go along like charitable giving limits. Being able to eFile and get my refund direct deposited is great too. If you have never done your own taxes and you are filing a 1040 with additional forms, you may find that you hit a stand still at certain points and will need to do research to figure out how to enter the info. Worst case scenario you can complete your return as much as possible and get additional assistance from TurboTax professionals or take it to a preparer for review before you file.
What's great about it: I feel more confident I'm not missing any deductions or forms.
What's not so great: You can sometimes get stuck and you have to search for answers rather than having the form instructions in front of you.

stae tax deduction on federal form
on March 28, 2015

You take the amount of state taxes paid by W2 and do not automaticaly recalculate federal taxes on actual state taxes paid. After calulating state tax ask "recalculate federal tax using actual state tax paid/owed?" Should be done automatically as the amount held is never exact. If the person has to pay more, feds get less, get money back, feds get more. was easy to do long hand. Your notes are unclear as how to do the entry. use 1940 English
What's great about it: seems to have adjustment for actual paid
What's not so great: not 100% sure why actual paid not used

Good experience, but.....

On my first round of data entry, I had a question about my data and it appeared I needed to close out of Turbo Tax and come back into it.
When I went to close out Turbo Tax, I was not prompted to save the data, so all data was lost and I had to enter all of the data all over again.
Did there not used to be a "button" that we could click on the page we were viewing that said something like...."save your data now and complete rest of it later"....or something like that? Anyway, did not receive a prompt to save the tax data (and I was at the end of the data entry....2.5 hours worth!!!) and so I had to do it all over again. Went faster the second time, but still...........
Other than the above and the disappointment of my tax credits being taken away from me from the Health Insurance Marketplace (had to pay back a big sum).....all went well. Will use Turbo Tax again.
What's great about it: Streamlined, neat and thorough
What's not so great: Had to enter data twice....no option to save

Better Last Year!
on March 28, 2015

For each in-kind donation last year you asked for the date of each. This year you lump them together and instruct to put "Various" for the date. When I do your program types "Variousious" I corrected this to "Various" in each case. Later during checking your program complains that "Various" is insufficient because that doesn't establish that it occurred during 2014. So I changed "Various" to "xx/xx/2014". That was OK for the moment but during later checking the checker complained that it didn't say "Various". Your program also asks for old numbers which it doesn't use anyway like what you spent on windows in prior years even when I bought no windows in 2014 Please fix these flaws!.
What's great about it: Basically correct!
What's not so great: Wouldn't let me efile Federal due to your new error!
