Before purchasing Turbo Tax I prepared my taxes on your online site. Once I determined that I owe Federal taxes. I stopped and never filed electronically as I was going to file and pay on the 15th of April by mail.
Soon after I get a letter from the IRS stating that they are auditing my 2014 Federal return. I did not transmit any data to them. They, the IRS, said if I suspect that this may be fraud to fill out a specific form and mail in that form with certain verifiable proof of identification. This I did and confirmed on their website that the return they have on file is in fact not mine.
How did this identity theft occur I asked myself? Then I realized I did my return on your website for the very first time. This will also be the last time using your website to prepare my taxes.
So, considering the ID theft and breach of your secured data that was all in the news I am wondering if the fraudulent return information came from Turbo Tax online.
Now this brings me to another issue with using the desk top version of your software.
Since I am now no longer able to file my federal return electronically because of this fraud alert. I am required to print my return and send it to a special office for fraud affected taxpayers.
I still need to file my NY State return electronically, by law, but was unable to transmit this through Turbo tax because the federal return was not electronically filed.
The only workaround was to file both electronically. This after knowing that the IRS told me I could not file this way because of the fraud attempt.
The IRS said that this transmission will fail, but this was the only way to get the state taxes electronically sent.
What's great about it: Ease of doing the taxes

Couldn't have done them without Turbo Tax

I had never done income taxes until several years ago when I had to take over due to my husband's illness. Without TurboTax, I would be lost. Now, I almost looked forward to doing our taxes. Almost.:)

2014 Tax Return REview

I like the quick, easy direction for filling in information. Going step by step makes it seem easy to use. What I don't like is the way you enter individual information for filing jointly. I became confused about which individual I was working with. If there are 2 names on the form, then make a statement that you will be doing this section with one first and then will do the other. This was not easy to follow with business and medical deductions.
But overall, I have always been happy with your software.
What's great about it: Quick, easy directions, step by step, easy filing
What's not so great: confusion with deductions and medical expenses
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Painful

Install, uninstall, four times. Multiple crashes. Install errors referencing 2013 version of program. NO information on TT site. Visits to TT site were next to useless. Had to Google the problem and had the good fortune to trip over the answer. Very disappointed.

Minimizes the guesswork

My father-in-law was an accountant and filed our taxes before he passed away in 1995. Since then, I've used Turbo Tax exclusively. I have been able to maximize my deductions and minimize my tax burden. The program has given me insight on how to properly prepare for my taxes during the course of the year which has not only saved me time during tax preparation, it has saved me money.
This year, my wife and I both had cancer with considerable out-of-pocket medical expenses. Turbo Tax incited me several years ago to use an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of all our medical expenses with the categories set up as they are in the program. I was able to make the most of our medical expenses by qualifying for the federal medical deduction. The spreadsheet saved me a lot of time and money.
I honestly don't think my father-in-law would have achieved as much of a refund as Turbo Tax was able to provide. I'll continue to use it until the day I can't physically or mentally complete my own taxes.
