2009 Tax Return
on March 12, 2010

It is easy to complete the forms using the Turbo Tax program. I am having difficulty having IRS accept my 2009 return electronically.
For the 2007 tax year the Turbo Tax program did not catch an error in submitting for the child care credit. The error cost me an additional $520 and $42 in interest.

I did my taxes in less than 2 hours. This year I had wife retirement, employer closed and was on unemployment. Job search expense. IRA rollovers and changes in retirement accounts due to stock market. With all these changes in my life, I'm still sure everything was covered. All this for $15.00

Retired clergy housing allowance
on March 18, 2010
Posted by: TKN1939
Last year one of your Pros on Turbo Tax online community said you would upgrade the clergy housing allowance feature for 2009. That did not happen.
I am retired clergy with no W-2's, only church pension and TIAA annuity income. There is no easy way to tell how I declare my clergy housing allowance because I have no self-employment (SE) income and so you program does not give me a clergy business SE number (18300?).
I delayed my return 2-3 weeks while I searched the online answers and other sources, but none gave me a definitive answer. Finally, a consultant told me to look at lines 16a and 16b on the Forms on Turbo Tax.
And there it was. My church pension amount (equal to my housing allowance) was subtracted from my federal taxable amount. That's what I wanted, but I don't know how that happened (maybe it was taken from the file of my previous return).
Next year I would like more specific info on where and how to enter my housing allowance as a retired clergy person with no W-2's and only income from pensions and annuity. Thank you.

Turbo Review

I purchased the product because the H&R Block software I purchased would not complete a form correctly. Turbo tax was recommended by a person I called for an explaination of a form her bank had sent me. I paid $40 for H&R block software and only $24 for Turbo Tax. Both included free Federal filing and H&R Block included one State filing. However my refunds were greater with the Turbo Tax software. After comparing the two products, Turbo Tax Basic is the better product.
