Bad Advice on Taking the Standard Deduction

When estimating whether to itemize or take the standard deduction, I estimated "over $5,000" in medical expenses and no other areas to itemize. TurboTax suggested taking the standard deduction. I almost got lazy and agreed because I wasn'y sure if insurance premiums and a few out of pocket expenses would be enough to produce a lower tax. The software provides no help by saying how much I'd need to find. When reviewing what's deductible, I realized qualified long term care expenses were deductible. That was the deduction jackpot since there were way over $5,000 in those expenses. No thanks to TurboTax, I reduced the tax to $0. And it's very annoying to be told how great my tax planning is just because there's no refund or payment due.

Why I Keep Using Turbo Tax

I've used TT for the past few years and never had any problems. This year, for the first time ever, my return was rejected for a minor oversight on MY part. I rec'd an email from TT notifying me and giving me step by step instructions on what was incorrect and how to fix it. After making the changes, I ended up with a larger refund! If I had filed the old fashioned way, I might have had serious problems - not the least of which might have caused me to receive a lower refund, or fines for an incorrect return. Thanks TT! See you next year.

Great Tool

I have used TurboTax Basic for many years, and have full confidence in it. The prompts are easy to understand and easy to follow. In recent years, however, the tax calculation has consistently been $5 more than what is called for under the IRS tables. Although I have questioned this more than once to the company, it has never responded with an explanation. I still like the product, and just count the extra tax as part of the purchase price.

What happend to Turbo Tax

I have used TurboTax for over 5 years and have always been pleased until this year. I have used the home and office version until this year and it was easier to use than the basic edition this year.
The major problem was the updates in February that cause the program to crash and require a reinstall. I was afraid to do the updates agian and finished mine without doing the updates. The efile was complicated and the rebate for state efiling was way more complicated than it needed to be. I pity people who are not computer literate. They would have thrown their hands up and quit long before I did. TurboTax needs to get their act together before putting out a program as poor as this year was.

Continues to get better

I have used Turbo Tax Basic for years, it continues to get more user friendly because Intuit listens to their customers and responds in a very positive way. I have some complicated rentals and the basic program handles them very well, also the IRA and SSA stuff. I do not have to deal with State Taxes so I cannot speak to that area. The free filings are a wonderful bonus for anyone and the program really files fast and follows up for you with acceptance notification. Turbo Tax also addressed several credits that I did not know about.
