In regard to taking RMD's annually, it could be much clearer how to figure cost basis for nondeductible IRA's each year. It is not clear if the cost basis is always the original total of nondeductible IRA's for each year, or changes after each time an RMD is taken.

My review of Turbo Tax

Turbo Tax is a great way to do taxes. The only issue I have is the part at the end that asks about using your info and needing consent etc. It's late, I'm tired and I don't want to deal with a bunch of stuff so that Intuit can make an extra buck.

Dangerously inept for retirees

This return was for my father-in-law. The Turbo Tax guided process suggested that he take the standard deduction when he had over $60,000 in medical expenses. Following the Turbo Tax guide would have resulted in a tax liability of over $7,000 more than he actually owed, as well as a fine.
How did this happen? Well, when asked by the guide about medical expenses, I selected the maximum amount (over $5,000) but it never came back and asked how much over. Basically, Turbo Tax missed over $55,000 of legitimate deductions. If I hadn't known that the Turbo Tax result was completely bogus, my father-in-law would be a good deal poorer. That's dangerously inept software.

TurboTax Basic continues to be an easy, reliable way to prepare our whole family's taxes. A few years ago, the IRS called me to question my use of a particular form, saying it was the wrong one. I said the TurboTax had selected it for me. The agent checked and found out that TurboTax was right and the IRS had been wrong! That helps bring me back each year.
