Thanks Turbo Tax!

Overall, a very positive experience. Talked with Larry and Ed on the phone to resolve my foreign income error. They were both very helpful in fixing the problem. Other than that, everything was pretty self explanatory.

Worth It!

I was very happy with the product. The step-by-step instructions made the process very easy.
The only problem that I had was when I went back to edit the return before I filed it. Originally I entered some large ticket items for the sales tax deduction. I needed to modify the amounts that I originally entered......I FINALLY got the return to reflect what I needed it to be, but it was a difficult and frustrating process.

Awkward, irritating
on April 13, 2010

I have used TaxCut in previous years and decided to give TurboTax a try. I thought the screen layout was awkward - had to keep scrolling to enter data. Harder to jump to other sections as needed, or get resources. I was irritated by the fact that the program was constantly trying to sell "upgrades," and even when I clicked "no" it would come back and say ARE YOU SURE YOU DON'T WANT THIS? Yes, I'm sure-that's why I clicked no in the first place.

Use it Yearly

This years version did not seem as easy to use. I was unsure if I finished each topic the first go round. Missed the teachers expenses completely.

TurboTax & TAXES are Too Complex
on October 16, 2010

Let me get one rant off my chest -- I only NEED the basic version of TurboTax. I find the repeated offer to upgrade annoying, especially since it asks EVERY time! Visit Schedule C and you are asked to upgrade to Home & Business -- EVERY visit. Visit Schedule E and you are asked to upgrade to Premium -- EVERY time you review your rental property entries. These pitches should have check boxes marked, "DON"T ASK ME AGAIN."
Now with that off my chest, there are several other small annoyances. The Interview is entirely too LINEAR. If you mark an entry as estimated, and later want to return, you have to walk through all the interview pages (or go to the form and forget about the interview) There needs to be an outline, or left side navigation pane with topics listed. And the highlight in the outline should follow along. You should be able to click on ANY interview topic and go directly to that page.
Another annoyance is that the topics overview EXPANDS ALL topics in the overview and resets to the top of the page after you complete each subtopic. What should happen is that subtopics I collapse (because they don't apply) should STAY collapsed and upon returning from a subtopic, the page and cursor should be positioned ON the topic I just completed, not reset to the beginning. If the entire outline were reconfigured to use an always visible outline in a separate left-side pane, it would be much easier to navigate topics and know where you are.
There are some minor quirks such as check boxes that don't stay checked. Some "None of the above" boxes have to be rechecked each time you visit the topic.
I like to show the form while I'm using the Interview. In this version of TurboTax, this view does not work very well. The interview will hide the form when asking certain questions, and when the form IS shown, the interview pane must be scrolled to show the CONTINUE button. A better approach might be to put the "portrait" form and the interview side-by-side with the BACK and CONTINUE buttons in a "fixed" always visible location. Then I could very quickly CLICK through the interview questions while watching the highlighted numbers follow down the respective form. The CONTINUE button wouldn't jump around and check boxes, once checked, would stay checked so I could just rest my cursor on the button and "thumb" through the interview so-to-speak.
One welcome improvement -- eFiling was FLAWLESS and VERY simple. Maybe this is because of the carryover info from the previous year, but it sure seemed to be quicker!
Bottom line -- TurboTax does a good job of keeping our EVER-MORE-COMPLEX tax code from completely doing us in. With improvements in navigation through the program (as I discussed above), TurboTax would be even slicker to use. Now if only our legislators had to do their taxes by hand, maybe we'd see simpler tax code.

Decent product with regard but slow and cumbersome

I have used the product for a while and have not had any issues until this year. The product had problems installing, still can't install on my desktop, and it seems to take an inordinant amount of time time to start and seems to freeze at times. Otherwise I am satisfied. My return is complete and accurate.
