Comprehensive Tax Return Preparation
on March 17, 2010

The screens are user-friendly. The questions are easy to answer. Because the questions are so comprehensive, it would be hard to make a mistake on your tax return.

Easy to Use

Although not a con, I found it somewhat confusing that certain sections, such as "non-taxable dividend income", were available to be "visited" even though TurboTax automatically completed them based on inputs to other sections.
Recommend adding clarifying notes or directions to prevent this confusion in future years.

I have used TurboTax for 5 years
on March 29, 2010

I have used the Turbo Tax product for at least 5 years. The tool is very easy to use and is indispensible if you have Capital Gains/Losses and Foreign Tax (form 1116) reporting to do. The endless calculations by hand are easy to mess up and the calculations are complicated. There are 2-3 enhancements that would get rid of some irritations with the tool. 1) I was solicited 3 times by the tool (at least) to file my State Taxes in the tool. My state does not have a state income tax. Put a field for me to check once that there is not a state income tax and quit irratating me with the prompts all through the tool. 2) Bigger issue. There are about 10 categories for income, and 10 for deductions. Every time I complete a sub-category, the tool takes me to the top of that page where Category 1 is located. I have to scroll down to get to the bottom so I can Click on the "Next Income Category". Either track my position in the list of 10 income categories and return me where I left off, or put the "Next Income Category" button at the top and bottom of the list to eliminate all teh scrolling. Same for the Expense categories. 3) The Charities has too many clicks for each charity. It says done after you enter the name of the charity and the location of it. But it is not really done, You have to notice that you need to click on the "enter money" button (or enter items button). Then you get another screen to click another button for the frequency and amount. Then again you click on a complete button, but it takes you back to the same charity enrty for you to do the "real" complete button. Surely one of your designers can come up with a more streamlined approach and get rid of some clicks. 4) After I submitted the filing, I realized I did not enter charity mileage. This was not an obvious prompt as it was in past versions of Turbo Tax. It was probably one of those FOUR buttons in the Charity section and I did not notice I had to click mutiple charity buttons if I had both money and mileage to declare for the same charity. Again, a more streamlined screen where the tool prompts for mileage, hotel expenses, food expenses on the same screen you enter your donation amount. The mileage was not enough to make me file an amended return since at most it would only move me one entry on the tax table this year. In past years I have traveled far distances for charity events and the mileage was significant. I do like how charity information is carried forward from prior year return and you can select which ones are also going to be used this year. We donate to 30-35 charities a year so the good parts of this component on Turbo Tax are appreciated (but the negative parts with too many clicks and poor prompting on mileage is multipled by the 30-35 entries we make). Thanks for the opportunity to provide feedback -- hopefully someone is reading these and will try to incorporate my suggestions.
