It still works

I've been using TurboTax for many years. My finances aren't sufficiently complex to warrant hiring a professional preparer and I have yet to find an easier, faster or more cost-effective way to prepare my own tax return.

Better than HR Block ?

I started using Turbo Tax for probably more than 10 years, I used HR Block last two years because I got it for free on the mail , to this date I am not sure why but becasue the "price" was righ I decide it to give a try. I still like turboTax a little more, but I don't think there is a big difference so if you can get a good deal in one of them go for it . I was disapointed that I was not able to import data from old turbo tax returns ( older that a year) or from the HR block program, it would have saved me some time. Also I did not like that they do not offer much help with the capital gains on the basic program, I think that should be standard. As with all late Intuit products they are trying to squezee as much money from you as they can, and I hate all those questions for upgrades. When I first started usen quicken ( a long time ago, don't remember when but I loaded it using floppies) I thought that it was the best program ever. I still like it but I feel like they want to take advantage of you

Very simple and easy to use

I have used Turbo Tax for years and find it to be very logicially layed out and easy to use. My only complaint is the cost of the state return. Should be no more than $20 as my state has a simple efile that works very well.

Some Good, Some Unpolished, Some Bugs

Having always done my own taxes, I used TurboTax this year with high expectations. Some of the program's comments seemed pretentious ("We saved you this", or "$63,500 in itemized deductions is better than $12,500 in standard deductions" duh...), better suited to someone who's never done taxes before. Information gathering was pretty efficient, with helpful hints ("this is uncommon" or "you don't qualify for this"). Having the program compute the Alternative Minimum Tax requirement for me was nice. I did lose about an hour's work when it was Unable to Save and I couldn't keep my entries while reviewing my tax forms before e-filing. If you explore on your own, after completing a section, the program takes you back to the main screen, but instead of putting you back at where you left off, it puts you back at the top of the screen, and standard browsing techniques like clicking the scroll wheel don't work. You have to roll and roll or use the scroll bar to get back to the section where you were. The program and help files didn't relate sections I was completing back to the real tax forms very well at all, so I often had no idea where information I was struggling to pull together were going to show up (or not show up, in some cases). I would use TurboTax again if there's a free basic version again next year, but if it's not an option, will either do my own or try Tax Act for $10.

Effective and Efficient

No software is completely fool-proof, especially when (1) tens of millions of people are using it, and (2) it has to be compatible with a government agency. All things considered, however, TurboTax is an outstanding product. I have used it since 2002 and I am delighted with the results.

It took me only an hour to walk through Turbo Tax. I've never used the software before and will definately every year from now on!
