Impression SGH-A877
on February 27, 2011
Posted by: serodgers
Phone worked well for the first year (just outside the warranty), at one year and one week the touchscreen quit working. I tried the hard reset, and it is now stuck on the calibrate screen. If it can be fixed without major cost I would like the phone.
Pros: keyboard size
Cons: touchscreen problems
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

A decent enough phone, but short-lived

I like a phone that is slightly thick and heavy so I don't feel like I'm going to break it by touching it. The Impression has the "feel" of a sturdy phone, although the slide started to wobble ever so slightly towards the end of my relationship with this phone (perhaps having something to do with why it died). I like the hide-away toolbar on the screen where I can customize my shortcuts, and I made a lot of use of all the standard tools. (Alarms, calendar, etc., my Impression was like my own personal planner and reminder system.) I like the USB compatibility and often had my Impression hooked up to my computer to transfer images or music, or sometimes used it with my car stereo similar to an MP3 player.
I used the mobile web browser extensively, and usually got at least 5-6 "connection failed, try again?" alerts per browsing session. And it only worked well with true mobile sites. I also experienced the often-mentioned problem of the phone "eating" characters when drafting long texts. (Anything over 2-3 pages would lag considerably and require a lot of correction due to the character consumption.) The GPS service was unreliable in areas where I needed it the most, and took me 3 hours out of my way once.
In the 13th month of owning it, the touch screen stopped responding reliably. I recalibrated it and removed the screen protector, but it got worse. Around the same time, I stopped being able to hear phone calls (short of using the speaker phone), and then the screen began to black out randomly and change colors. So you could say I liked my Impression well enough, until it took a leave of absence. I still like Samsung phones overall, but am disappointed with the way this one quit on me. I had planned to hang on to it until I qualified for an upgrade, but it left me hanging long before that.
Pros: Built-in speakers, Bright display, Inexpensive, Realistic color, full keyboard, sturdy-ish, not too complicated
Cons: Did not meet expectations, tricky texting, mobile web unreliability, longevity
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Phone stops working after a few months!

This phone is perfect for a kid you (the parent) wish to punish: It will amaze the easily impressed with its wide variety of fun features, while at the same time frustrating the user with its annoying limitations and quirky restrictions.
It is fun to use for the first week or month, then it is just a communication tool, and in the end (within a year for me & most others) the touch screen will become Non-Touch, at which point the phone will be unusable except to receive calls or to dial out using the qwerty keypad.
Had I known this, I would not have bought this phone. Do I recommend this product to others? Yes, if you feel it is worth your money to get a device that will fail miserably within a year! If you, like me, expect more for your dollar, don't waste any time or money on the Impression SGH-A877. I'll never buy another Samsung product.
Pros: none of the above!
Cons: Poor quality, Did not meet expectations
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I had problems with the touch screen on this phone from day one. I had it replaced and the second one had the same problems. It also freezes and has to turn off then on if you don't use it for a while. Now the whole screen does not work and I'm giving up. I would not buy another Samsung phone nor would I ever recommend this phone to anyone.
Cons: Poor quality, Did not meet expectations
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I love this phone only problem I have had is the phone will freeze up if you do alot of texting. I found that alot of my friends who own the same phone had experienced this problem as well. Several even returned the phone due to this issue. Other than that the phone is spot on with everything I need it to do. Texting is a breeze and I do alot of texing. Internet runs smoothing now where I live has gotten 3g service. I would recommend this a phone to anyone who wants an affordable well built phone.
Pros: Bright display, Durable, Realistic color
Cons: will freeze up when texting
I would recommend this to a friend!

Owned the phone for less than a year. The ear-piece in the phone stopped working. Had to use speaker phone just to hear other person while talking on the phone. Sent the phone back and received another one. Within a few weeks had the same problem with the phone. The phone wasn't durable either. I upgraded to the Captivate which is a great phone.
