I initially selected the SGH-A877/Impression because it was the only option on my company's cell phone plan with all the business features I needed. I love the features!
After using the phone for about 6 months, the touch screen went out. I had not known to save numbers to the SIM card, so I lost them all and had to reenter them manually. Now, about 5 months later, the touch screen is out again. I don't use the phone for texting or manual dialing, but I do open the slide to unlock the phone. I wouldn't consider this heavy use but evidently it is.
My only other source of frustration is that the menus are not as intuitive as other phones I've used. The customization helps with this.
Overall, I would not recommend this phone because of my recurring problem with the touch screen. When it goes out, there is no way to navigate and the phone is virtually useless.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Awful Phone
on March 28, 2010

When I first got this phone, I thought it was the greatest thing ever like everyone else. Then as I started to actually use it on a daily basis, I realized that there were so many little frustrating things wrong with it. Things like:
- Very poorly designed unlock button/mechanism
- Bad camera quality
- Very uncompromising when it comes to customization
- Comes with junk software: all of them are trials, and even once they become unusable unless purchased, you can't delete them from the phone
- Disappointing slide-out keyboard. It's very slow, and often skips letters if you type at more than, like, 20 words per minute (I often find myself using the on-screen keyboard whenever possible; shame it's not usable for sending texts)
- Image quality is TERRIBLE! Even if you save a hi-res image to the phone, it will automatically resize it to a far lower quality
- Constraints on custom ringtones make it almost impossible to actually use one you want (I had to take an already short music file into audacity and truncate it even further in order to use it)
Now, I was able to live with all of those things, even if they were extremely frustrating. But the reason that I'm writing this review to tell you not to buy this phone is because after about 5 or 6 months, the screen will stop working, as mine did a couple days ago. It started off as a glitchy decalibration that would get really bad after making a call or texting, and then get a little better as I navigated the phone more. Resetting the phone was also a temporary fix, but now the entire lower half of my screen won't respond to touch, and the top half only responds if I push VERY hard. This is extremely disappointing because accessing my contacts list and menu are impossible now. I have rarely ever dropped this phone, and have never gotten it very wet (a few drops of glass cleaner to wipe some muck off about a month ago, and perhaps some raindrops is the extent of it). I also don't seem to be the only person with this problem. I've read about this complaint from many other people on the internet, and the fact that their screen seems to stop working at around 6 months tells me there's some fundamental flaw with the software of this phone. (I would say hardware, but even the slightest touch will still wake the phone up after the screen has dimmed.)
DO NOT BUY THIS.

Great Phone

I have had this for 3 Days. I had a Solstice and replaced it because of echo with no cure! As far as the complaint on lock button by others it is a good thing because you do not have to worry about unlock in pocket. The only feature it needs is voice dial I do miss it but can live with out as well as where you want to save photos you take. The wallpaper also stinks for MEN. All that said it is a great phone and enjoy using it. Battery life is good. Picture quality is as good as digital camera. Screen size another plus as well as size of slide out keyboard. It is feature laden and rivals those costing much more. My granddaughter is getting a new phone and this is her choice after seeing mine and what it will do. It comes with a USB cord to upload to PC and works well. You can also download manual as PDF file and save to PC. Samsung for the most part has offered a great phone with all the features of much more expensive phones. If your looking for a full featured phone at a great price look no further.

Great phone...at first

I absolutely loved this phone for the first 2-3 months I had it. I did have some issues with texting early on (freezing up while sending, not receiving messages), but that was expected. I'd read previous reviews and knew what to expect. I've now had the phone for 9 months and the feature casualties are stacking up. The camera no longer works properly and all my pictures are displayed upside down, the handwriting feature, although rarely used, no longer works, and quite a few of the buttons on the qwerty either stick or need to be pounded to work. Every so often, the phone simply freaks out, for lack of a better term. The screen appears to vibrate and nothing can be accessed. Turning it off is the only fix, but then comes the matter of when it will decide to turn back on. Could be right away, could be an hour later. This phone definitely has some bugs that need to be worked out. Should that happen, I'd be more than happy to purchase a new one. Until then, I'm back to my old Samsung that randomly shoots the battery out.

If I was a normal phone user I would be impressed. Actually this phone really is nice but my main complaint is that it will not sync contacts, calendar or tasks with Microsoft outlook though the Samsung PC studio. It DOES sync music / other media but not the things you actually need a backup of...
If anyone from Samsung reads this please see what you can do about getting an update out for PC Studio to take this and you would get a few more stars from me.
This phone was just released as of me writing this so something like this could be in the works?

This is the first time Samsung has impressed me with a phone. No pun intended, a great quality screen, enjoy the clarity and responsiveness compared to others I've had. camera does zoom just not at full resolution, as with most phones. not having a flash was a bummer but can deal with it. Qwerty keyboard seems to lag a bit, but not bad. PC studio is lame and seems to even freeze when i try to transfer larger files. I like the fact the unlock key is difficult to get to it doesn't unlock in my pocket. The thing I dislike the most is the ring tone capabilities, I like to make my own and load them but it seems VERY picky about size and formatting to use for alarms and caller specific ring tones. Phone could be a little louder, but again not bad.

This phone if doing texts needs to be rebooted daily because it will for no reason stop sending text messages. My son has the same phone and he says he restarts his phone 5-6 times a day because of heavy text usage.
I give it low ratings also because all of the items in the phone that you cant delete. Another nice feature is when the battery gets low, the phone will periodically vibrate like crazy insuring that the phone will be dead shortly!
