Let me start off by saying that this is my first projector purchase. I had been using a 47" Phillips LCD HDTV prior to this. While not big, it was very bright and looked spectacular. I love high def. So I was hesitant at first to project 110" of 1080p on a screen and have it look good. But let me tell you - the quality is top notch from the Epson 8100. even at 110", Blu-Ray discs look very sharp. I game on the Epson too, and the Xbox 360 (while it has annoying AA issues) fills the screen with breathtaking cinematic quality. Also, something has to be mentioned about brightness and, more importantly, contrast. I am not disappointed at all with the brightness or contrast of the 8100. The adjustable color modes come in handy to get the color/brightness/contrast just right for the situation. For example, when watching Blu-Ray discs, I use x.v.color mode (I like it best, personally). But for Sunday afternoon games when I have company I'll use Dynamic or Living Room modes for extra brightness (that was I can leave the lights on and/or the window shades open - nobody likes watching the game in a cave...)
As far as usability with lights, I can say this: I have 4 100W recessed ceiling lights, 2 of which ~8ft, and 2 @ ~12ft. from the screen. While in Dynamic mode, the lights DO NOT affect viewing at all. If the color mode is switched to x.v.color or "Theater Black" modes, you will notice some wash-out. But thats with 4 100W lights on... who watches movies with 4 100W lights on??
Case in point - you don't NEED a cave to enjoy this projector.
Hope I helped. SAM

I saved my money for a long time to get this projector. I was in love with it the frist time i turned it on and yet today. I had a little problem with my lamp and instead of epson telling me sorry they sent me a new lamp. The guy at their team was very nice and helpfull. Never have i been let down by Epson. I bought my first project from them and when its time to get upgrade i will only go with another Epson.

Lamp Life

The projector puts out an amazing picture I simply painted the wall with a paint I found online and It is spectacular picture I use my PS3 to play blurays and games on it and I was stunned when I saw how beautiful the Dark Knight looked. Unfortunately after 9 months the lamp gave out on me after 1800 hours but considering that other lamps on Panasonic and many others are rated for only 2 to 3000 and cost 400 to 500 to replace I'm not too displeased about it just thought it was worth a mention as I believe Epson should look into the issues with lamp life, as I have seen many complaints on this subject.

Poor Lamp Life

While it works, it works great, but I've gone through 1 lamp each year with the most lamp hours I've ever had of some 600 hours. Don't think you'll get close to the 4000 hours they state. I'm very disappointed -- not a happy customer.

I love the projector features and image. This is my 3rd projector. My first 2 were Panasonic. I was looking for a lower cost 1080P projector with a long battery life. It is definitely 1080P but the battery life didn't meet my expectations of the advertised 4000 hours. It lasted 1280 hours and then died. Even though it was outside of the 90 day lamp warranty, Epson was great about replacing it with an overnight shipment. Great customer service! I would recommend the company, but maybe not this particular model of projector.
