We have been using our A80 (older 4 MP camera) and have been trying to find a decent replacement/upgrade. Unfortunately, most pocket cameras today don't have a sports feature. This is a much more valuble and practical feature than "fireworks" for example....
We bought this camera based on some reviews on this site. Unfortunately, this camera didn't do it for us. It takes forever to regenerate the flash, and does not capture any movement clearly. If you want to get ghost images with streaks, this is for you. If you shoot anything that may move, this is not the camera for you.
We have two young children (3 & 5 yrs) and like to take "action" shots of them, shots that they don't know we are taking. We may snap a picture while they are coloring, playing with toys, etc. This past weekend, I brought the SX120 IS to my sons (5 yrs) final soccer game and tried to take some shots, 90% were blurry, it took on average 5 seconds to focus, flash took on average 5-10 seconds to regenerate. I was only able to get a group shot - and that came out iffy. Shots of the team on the side lines waiting for a shift, etc. were blurry. After seeing this, I didn't even try to take shots of them on the field. Batteries were new, tried all camera settings....
Our A80 is absolutely great. The LCD is on the small side and 4MP is low to today's standards but we are really struggling to find an upgrade.
Thanks,

Not what I expected from Canon

I was excited with Zoom range and features, but very disappointed in image quality. Right out of the box the images were not nearly as clear as images from my old 2.0MP PowerShot A40. I read the online manual and adjusted some settings as recommended, but still had poor image quality. I was also surprized to find that the flash had to be flipped up manually which is a huge hinderance especially when trying to take photos of children, nature or other quickly changing subjects. I own several Canon digital and EOS film cameras (A40, A70, S10, Elan 7e & EOS 3) and have always been extremely satisfied with the quality, but this SX120is was very disappointing and I returned it after 2 weeks.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu
Cons: Missing features/settings, Poor image quality, manual flash

Not for sports

I loved the camera at first, takes great still pictures. I took it to a basketball game the first night i had it and then a football game the second night. The photos were not at all what I hoped. There is no sports setting on the camera, and the photos were almost all blurry. I tried almost every other setting to see if any would help. In many one player would be clear and the rest were blurry. It was frustrating in trying to capture pictures you only have a fraction of a second to get. I'm thinking of exchanging it for a better camera for sports photography, but i love the size, the screen and the still photos, just can't count on movement.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: Poor image quality, Poor Low-Light Performance, Short battery life, couldnt capture movement, no sports photos

Great Pictures but problems with the lens
on February 19, 2010

I loved the way this camera took pictures. They were very clear, crisp and precise. Its a great camera to have if your new at taking pictures, and its very portable which is nice. But its definitely not a camera for you if your the type to maybe drop your camera or not handle it as lightly as others do. Very flimsy construction and not very durable at all. Which is why mine broke unfortunately. Also I've had a lot of problems with the lens.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life, Flimsy Construction
I would recommend this to a friend!
