I am a former professional wedding photographer who got out of the biz before digital took over. I wanted something not quite professional grade, but more than just a point and shoot so I didn't have to lug out my old equipment anymore.
For the money, this camera has everything you need. No, it doesn't have a viewfinder, but that is a minimal problem. I've read several reviews about this camera that it doesn't take action shots. That is where the manual settings come in and if used the action shots I've taken, so far, have been great quality. This camera has up to a 1/2,500 second shutter, I believe, which is more than adequate.
I like this camera because my wife can use it with the auto settings and I can use the manual if I need to. I am using Lithium batteries, and am stil using the first set. I must also confess I dropped it the first day I had it and it didn't miss a beat. Not something you want to do, but it happened and is still working.
Overall a very solid product, but learning to use the manual controls will enhance the experience.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, durable
Cons: Complicated controls/menu, flash recharge time
I would recommend this to a friend!

Point & Shoot Versa Digital w/lens

I bought this camera before going on a cruise. I didn't want to take my expensive digital with lens & take the chance on it getting damaged with the excursions that were planned. I started searching in December, cruise was in April. Less than 72 hours before the cruise, I bought the Cannon PowerShot SX120 IS with 10x optical zoom. This was a great purchase for me. This camera allowed me to use all the other settings but yet gave my husband the chance to have it on automatic and take a good photo. The photos I took on our cruise and the excursion were awesome. People who saw some of the shots I was taking either early in the morning with sunrises, late afternoon at sunset, from the ship out past a point, showing the detail of what I was taken to points of interest up close where amazed at the capabilities of this small camera. I explained learn your camera, digital is great because you can review and not wait on film developing. Take photos, review, experiment you will be amazed at what you can do and this camera will give what a high end digital camera will do. To become good you must practice and learn. I convince several couples on the cruise to consider buying your product and I hope that we will. My only mistake at the time of purchase was, that where I bought my camera didn't sell the accessories for the product. and I wished I had the time to purchase the rechargeable batteries. I learned quickly that because I took close to a 750 photos while on the cruise, this including deleting and retaking that my disposable batteries were only good for about 150-200 photos. I printed out 291 photos for scrapbooking and recording my husband and mine adventure. Because of the 10 megapixels, I know that enlarging my photos I will have no distortion or loss of photo quality. That my 4 x 6 photo will look good at 8 x 10 or 11 x 13 size or larger. I look forward to entering some of these photos in a local photo exhibition at the fair come fall.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life

I love the camera!!

I love this camera! I had the SX110 and upgraded to the 120. The camera is solid and sturdy. Has great features although I can't find the panaramic option that I believe my 110 had. The zoom on this camera surpassed my expectations! Picture quality and color is great! Even with the digital zoom the pictures are clear not grainy or pixal-ated! I just took it to Sedona and the Grand Canyon and got some awesome shots!!! I wish I could show you the zoom capability in this review!! The only down side is when you're zoomed way in it takes several seconds for the camera to process the picture. I haven't explored all the features yet but from what I can tell it will only get better! It takes 2 AA batteries and I dind't have a problem w/ the batteries running out until we got to AZ where I was taking pictures almost 24/7 for 4 days!!
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, durable, excellent zoom, great image stabilization

Love this camera

I ended up buying this camera to replace my 7 yr old one and love it! The manual it comes with doesn't tell you much, but when you download the software it installs the guide to your computer.
It does soooooo much. I love that you can take multiple pictures (I think it's one every second) when you turn that feature on. I also love that it gives you a ton of options for different settings, i.e. snow, fireworks, beach, sunset, etc.
The quality of the pictures is excellent. I don't think I've ever seen such clear pictures. The zoom is also great and can zoom 40x.
Overall, great camera. Good for people like me who are not anywhere near professionals, but still want high quality pictures and a lot of options!
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: Short battery life

Great Features, Major Battery Issues

This is a good camera and it has the perfect combination of features that satifsied both my requirements (great optical zoom, shutter priority option, very compact, good photo quality) and my wife's requirements (easy to just point and shoot and get a great picture without fussing around).
Consumer Reports rated the previous year's model a Best Buy, but didn't even given this year's model an honorable mention, and as near as I can tell, their main distinction between the two models was that this year's model requires about 2 thousandths of a second more time to recharge between shots than the model they liked. OK, so we all have occasions when we get frustrated because the camera won't take pictures as quickly as we'd like, and I can't fault Consumer Reports for having a threshold where one camera makes the cut and another does not, but I don't know anyone who can tell the difference between 2 ms and 10 ms. In other words, if last years' model was a CR Best Buy, this years' model should be regarded somewhat more highly because it has better resolution and the time difference between the two models is too trivial to notice.
The only problem is: this camera chews up battery power even when it is powere off! I charged up four brand new rechargable batteries and put two in the camera, checked it out briefly with the new batteries, and then left it on the shelf for a few weeks without using it. When I went to use the camera, it wouldn't even power on because the batteries were so low. I took out the batteries and put in the other two that had been sitting on the shelf since I charged them, and the camera was fine. I purchased four more rechargables and repeated this exercise a second time, with the same result.
I don't know if Canon considers this normal behavior or not, but I consider it to be defective behavior and I hope to raise the issue with them after I return from the vacation that led me to purchase this camera, a few weeks from now.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life

Excellent Camera!

This camera works great and despite what a lot of people are claiming it does have good battery life. The issue is what type of battery you buy. Normal Alkaline batteries get drained really fast, but if you buy high quality rechargeable batteries the camera has great life. After putting freshly charged 2700 mah batteries in it, I was able to take an hour of video and 500 pictures(keep in mind the batteries didn't have sitting time to leak energy which NIMH are prone to do). It also makes some difference if you turn down the brightness of the lcd screen.
The manual controls on the camera have been great. I've had a lot of fun and have taken some great pictures with them. I've even found the manual zoom helpful once in a while (though not very time efficient).
The camera's set up is good, but does take some time getting used to. Considering I had never used a Canon before they came pretty easily. I love the spin dial. It's great for looking through things quickly and is very helpful when shooting in full manual.
The image quality is good for its class and I've taken some great pictures with it. However if you want DSLR image quality you're going to have to pay a lot more. The image quality that this camera gives for its' price range is exceptional.
Another thing I like about this camera is the size. It's not a small camera, but I wouldn't consider it large. It fits great in the hand and has big 3' lcd screen. It's to big to fit in a pocket, but for what it offers it has a reasonably compact size. Though it has a plastic body, it has a very solid feel to it, and seems very high quality.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, manual controls
Cons: some barrel distortion at wide angle, no viewfinder

Great Camera

This is my second SX camera-first purchased the SX110 IS and my daughter loved it so much while we were vacationing together she used it instead of her more expensive "other brand" camera. She requested the same SX for her birthday but I elected to get the SX120, the newer version and she absolutely loves it. Great price point and a great camera for those who dont want to fuss with special adjustments which the camera does allow for but not necessary as it does it all for you in the auto mode. Can't say enough good things about this camera-you won't regret the purchase.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, durable

Good in its range

I have used Canon S5IS before, That's bit difficult to carry everywhere so bought this compact SX120IS camera. It takes real good images in sunlight. but will give Chromatic Aberration when you zoom 10x and take image. IS wont work properly in moving objects as i tried this in different settings. Images in night are really good. as a whole real good camera with pretty much all options required. Switch between the focus on faces when taking group snaps is good. As a whole tiny instrument filled with features.
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life, on 10x zoom chromatic aberration will happen
