Happy With Purchase

This is my first camera, and I am very happy with it. I am not a fan of those tiny palm-sized cameras, and i wanted a super-zoom camera, as to why I chose the SX120. I also wanted a point and shoot with full manual controls, so i can learn on it and upgrade to a DSLR. So far I love the controls on here, easy to use. One thing I don't like is the video quality when zooming in, but I am fine with that. I don't take much videos any way. I also wish it came with a full printed manual, so I can take with me when I am using the camera. It does come with a printed Basic User Guide. Another Con, is when using the Flash, it takes, what feels like forever, to take the next picture. My next camera will be a Canon, and I would recommend it to everyone.
Pros: easy to use, design/style, manual controls, 3in screen, quality
Cons: no printed manual, slow when using flash, video zoom quality

I love my canon. I wouldn't trade it for any other camera. The only bad part is the battery life and also the flash. This camera doesn't take pictures very well in low lighting. When you use the flash it takes 10 secs or so for the picture to actually take.
Pros: excellent image quality, durable, easy to use
Cons: Poor Low-Light Performance, Short battery life

Skimpy Owners manual
on December 13, 2009

I previously owned an SX100, but lost it to my daughter. I couldn't wait to replace it, and decided an upgrade to the SX120 was the way to go.
Well, I was disappointed to find such a skimpy owners manual supplied with the new camera. It's easy to understand why so many reviews state that the camera lacks features. The features are there, just not obvious.
I suggest new buyers download all 144 pages from Canon's website, and their experience with this camera will be rewarded. I am very satisfied with mine.
Replacing the supplied batteries with rechargeables is the way to go for longer battery-life. It works for me.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use, excellent long-range picture quality
Cons: Short battery life, Complicated controls/menu, incomplete instructions

Love It!

Why did I buy the SX120 IS? Because I tried other "pocket" cameras and this one is superior, plain and simple. I sampled and researched many other brands; this one kept coming out on top in every category.
So far, everything is perfect...I would expect nothing less from Canon.
Pros: long battery life, large lcd, 10x zoom, 10 mp (new!), distance of flash, portability--fits in a purse, easy to use, quality (nice sturdy build)
Cons: none

great bargain

The most impressive thing about the SX20 is the lens. A 20x zoom is almost unheard of in cameras of any sort. I was expecting the usual ills of such a huge range. There is definite barrel distortion at extreme wide angle but that disappears if you zoom in slightly. For landscape shots the extreme wide angle problem does not usually show up. You might notice it when shooting something with a grid pattern like a large building. But the lens is pretty amazing all the way to full zoom. Very crisp and clear out to the edges. The other features of the camera work very well. But it may not be for the total amateur. You have to know how to adjust the settings if you use anything but full Auto. Even so, it is a very easy camera to learn. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to go beyond point-n-shoot a little ways at a great price.
As with all non-pro digitals, it suffers from poor low-light performance and white balance issues indoors. You just have to accept this as a fact of life and adjust accordingly.
The camera has many, many great features and takes great stills and HD movies. Connect it to an HD TV using an HDMI cable and you will be impressed. I found the focusing and exposure control to be quick and reliable 99% of the time. That is well above average.
This is a great camera for what it is designed to do. I bought it to augment my EOS T1i for hiking, short trips, etc. due to its lighter weight and 20x lens.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, fantastic 20x lens
Cons: Poor Low-Light Performance, white balance indoors

Feels High-End at a great price

We bought this camera on the fly just days before our first trip to Las Vegas. I have just one thing to say about this product...Fantastic!
We used the batteries that came in the box but they didn't last until an 8 gig card was full. We purchased the more expensive lithium batteries and were able to fill that 8 gig card with videos and pics twice over. It even survived a couples drops on concrete pavement!
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, durable
Cons: Heavy/Bulky

Image quality is generally excellent. I bought it because it had all the manual controls and because of the 10X telephoto. I do miss a 28MM equivalent wide angle but have an N80 SLR and wide angle lenses for those pix. I also miss a eye level viewfinder, alhough the LCD is only unusable in very bright light and a viewfinder would have made the camera larger and probably not pocketable. Battery life with the disposable AA batteries is poor; rechargeables are somewhat better and lithium AAs are probably much better (haven't tried them yet). Exceptional flash unit for a "POINT AND SHOOT". Somewhat questionable IS stabilization.
Pros: easy to use, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: Short battery life, needs a eyelevel viewfinder.

Use NiMH and you'll love it!

I have owned two other name brand cameras and this one beats them both. Granted there has been some advances in technology since my last purchase 4 years ago, but among all the cameras I had to choose from, this one had the features I wanted/needed.
I feel it is absolutely necessary to have an AA battery compartment. Even though lithium ion batteries are better performers, they are always a special fit. Many reviewers here have stated that the battery life was unacceptable and that is true if you plan on using regular alkaline batteries with this camera. DON'T BOTHER. Buy a package of at least 2200 mAh nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries and a charger and you will not complain about battery life. Keep a spare pair charged and bring them with you! I also like the option of using alkalines should the need arise.
The 10X optical zoom is excellent, the abilty to take wide screen/angle shots is awesome!
The large LCD screen is very nice as you can adjust the brightness of the display as necessary. It also lets you set up a grid for "the rule of thirds".
It works better in low light than any other camera in this price range that I have used.
I always prefer a professionally printed manual. The supplied Get Started manual is worthless. A full manual was found on the CD which you can print if it is important to you.
Overall, a great camera!
Pros: easy to use for beginners, excellent photo quality, manual mode for more experience photographers
Cons: came without a printed manual, battery door is a bit difficult to open, no view finder
