Very good "first time" camera
on February 26, 2010

I love this camera! I got it for Christmas as a first camera. I was considering asking for an SLR, but, in my opinion, this is way better. (and way more durable-- I've accidentally dropped it a couple of times, but it still works wonderfully)
Everything about this camera screams two things: Easy and Awesome. I've gotten so many compliments on the pictures I've taken with this camera. Excellent photo quality, and the Macro setting is really good for close-ups! The only con I can even think of with this camera is the fact that, yeah, the batteries run out really fast. But I solved that by getting rechargeable batteries, and they work really well! Get a charger that holds 4 batteries; that way, when two batteries run out in your camera, replace them with the two that are in the charger, and charge up the run-out ones.
Overall, awesome camera! I absolutely love it!
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Poor Low-Light Performance, Short battery life

Great Little Camera

This is my first venture into digital still photography -- I've shot film all of my life. I am happy with the picture quality and the flexibility of shooting under any kind of lighting conditions and being able to see what it is I am getting as I shoot it. For example, I can either use the various white balance modes, or the manual one, and I can be more daring in experimenting with different color temperatures. Also, I have an 8MB memory card, so I can shoot a number of stills and not worry about limiting myself as I would when shooting film. And I keep a supply of 8 rechargable batteries, so that is also something I don't have to concern myself with.
There isn't much I can add to the other comments I've read on this camera except one thing: the video mode has many limitations. For one thing, if I am shooting wide and then zoom in while I shoot the camera does not readjust the focus, so I end up with a soft shot, forcing me to stay wide. Also, if I have zoomed in as far as I can on the optical zoom (4.0x) I cannot zoom back. I can only zoom forward, using the digital zoom, and then I lose detail because I am only magnifying the pixels. As long as I can work within those limitations I will do fine. I've shot a few short pieces, edited most of them and put them all on-line already. I suppose I will eventually have to buy a new camcorder (the old one died on me a few years ago) if I want to be more ambitious, especially as I want to shoot more professional video and work in HD again.
One other thing I do like about the video mode is that it yields a "film look" and not the usual "bright, crispy video" look that standard video cameras (and even HD cameras) still use. And yet this is with a standard resolution of 640x480 and operating at 30fps. I do love the way it looks on my TV and computer flatscreen -- the stills too; they look particularly gorgeous on a bigger screen.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Great Camera...Low Battery Life
on July 21, 2010

I just bought this camera about a week ago and I have already taken over 100 pics. I love this camera and would recommend it to anyone looking to purchase a nice but decent priced camera! The only problem I have is with the batteries. I have only had this camera for a week now and I have replaced and put brand new batteries in this camera 3 times already. Yes they are brand new batteries straight out of the package, and the are Duracell. Anyone have any other ideas how to make my batteries last longer? I'd rather not use the rechargeable ones only because I'd rather be able to replace the batteries right away and not have to carry a charger around with me. Overall best digital camera I've ever owned!!
Pros: megapixel, user friendly
Cons: Short battery life

Are There Enough Batteries in the World for This?

The pictures the camera takes are fine. It's just I have to take 3 or 4 sets of batteries if I go to a wedding, kayaking, camping etc. It is so annoying to change batteries all the time. It will cost you a fortune in batteries if you take alot of pictures.

Take my advice - do not buy!

I've had the Canon A1100 for less than a year (6 months?) and today have received an error message for "lens error" upon turning on the camera to take a picture. The camera makes a short grinding noise but the lens is locked in the closed position while the error msg flashes onto the screen briefly. Nothing else will happen. This item has been used responsibly and not abused. And I am not the only one to experience this error. Do a google search and find out for yourselves. In this economy, I would have to say this is not a smart purchase. There is no telling how long this camera will function.

Perfect Gift
on December 29, 2009

Received as Christmas gift. My first digital camera and I find it easy to use. Just set to automatic and shoot away. You can make changes to the settings as you desire but set on "Auto", point an shoot and you won't be dissapointed with the results. Battery life is kind of short when using flash constantly. This is the only con I can report. The camera is just the right size (not tool small and no bulky), lightweight, with a very bright display. I would certainly reccommend this camera !
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life
