Managing battery life
on November 15, 2010

This is my 3rd Powershot, all very good. The A1100is battery life can be managed by (1) setting "IS" for ONLY when the picture is actually taken, instead of continuously running. (2) use high capacity rechargeable, not alkaline. (3) in bright daylight turn off the LCD and use the viewfinder instead. All cameras have problems with LCDs when it's sunny. Canon is one of the few who still have viewfinders. When the battery warning light goes on, I switch off the LCD and can get another 30-40 shots. (4) in my small camera bag I keep a 3 sets of AAs (two rechargeable, one Lithium). This works great..

Great Little Point & Shoot
on November 9, 2009

I wanted a point and shoot camera that would be convenient and light to carry around when I didn't want to take my Digital SLR along, however I still wanted good quality pictures. I am extremely satisfied with the A1100 IS. It is really easy to use, the functions are easy to understand and uncomplicated. It is compact and will fit in your pocket or purse. The 12.1 megapixel resolution produces crisp and clear beautiful pictures. It also still has the viewfinder, which has gone by the wayside in so many point and shoot cameras and the 2.5" LCD screen is a nice size screen to review your pictures. The stabilizing feature is great. I have two negatives about this camera; the zoom feature can be a little slow and the batteries deplete really fast; ( standard or rechargeable), so be sure to carry extra batteries. These two negatives do not take away from the other features that make this camera a really nice point and shoot and I would strongly give the A1100 IS a thumbs up recommendation. I have been using myA1100 IS now for about 6 months and I am really satisfied with it's performance.
Cons: Short battery life, zoom can be a little slow at times.

My Experience with this camera
on December 7, 2009

Easy of Use: Superior. Hold down the turn on button and the camera instantly springs to life. Hold down again and it shuts off. Superior turn dial. Superior zoom function button. Superior view finder, crystal clear.
Simple Controls/menu: Clean menus, easy to access.
Nice Features/settings: Documentation does not go into depth on any one subject. Left me trying to figure out some of how the menu's/functions work. Even the "reset all" in the menu has not reset my flash. I turn the flash on and off and the flash works only sometimes. Perhaps I will be able to figure it out.
Bright LCD: Very bright, very good.
Excellent Image Quality: Superior
Good Low-light Performance: Superior
Battery Life: so far I have taken about 200 pictures at its finest quality and still have the 2 lithium rechargeable batteries I first placed in it. On the other hand, the opening for the battery is very flimsy, doesn't always close when you try. I find that if I am not very careful, I could easily break the battery opening door. This is a pity since I am always removing the memory card and putting my images on my computer.
Memory card: 8GM's of memory (optional purchase) can hold 9,999 pictures, or about 2,400 at its finest settings. More than sufficient.
Durable: Strong metal frame, will last for yrs
Overall, very good purchase, wouldnt hesitate to purchase again. Well worth it.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use
Cons: flimsy battery door, poor documentation

Do your research

For pros: I list the smaller size and handling. The pictures are sharp and the camera easy to use. The sound signals are loud enough so that I can hear them. I'm 70+ and hard of hearing. The price is right and I'm happy with 12mgp For cons: I disappointed that I don't have control of the f stops and speeds. I'm used to having some control over that. There are fewer modes than on my A80 but probalby enough to handle most circumstances. I expected more but that's my own fault for not doing a through researh on the product. I was dazzled by the 12mgp and good price.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: Missing features/settings, instruction book inadequate.

Great camera

Excellent small camera. Very easy to fit in a shirt pocket or jacket pocket to carry all the time. I like the fact that this camera HAS a viewfinder for use in bright sun when you just can't see the rear display. This is one feature that most non SLR cameras don't have anymore. Very easy to use with several shooting modes for different conditions. Great results for when you don't want to carry bigger and or more expensive gear.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, viewfinder

Much better than previous digital camera

I cannot justify a higher end camera for now because while taking pictures is a great hobby it isn't worth sacrificing other experiences. So my goal was to have a digi camera that was intuitive but not so stripped down or simplified as to be frustrating or useless. My last camera was OK but you had to read a very thick manual every time you wanted to figure out how to change an option or what a setting meant. That might be fine for those with much more experience or a really expensive set of hardware but it was just a pain to me. I had figured out how to use virtually everything about my new camera (with the exception of a few settings and options) within minutes of taking it out of the box. I am sure I will want to continue making a few adjustments here and there to suit my own style and the kinds of subjects I like to shoot, but already I know I made the right choice in this purchase. If and when I go to a bigger and faster model I will definitely look at Canon first.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Maybe the best ever

I teach digital photography to law enforcement personnel. I have also tested and evaluated cameras for law enforcement applications for several years. No single camera that I have ever tested has provided the features and functionality found in the A1100 required by first responders. Critical for first responder needs are (1) optical viewfinder (needed for low light composition, stability, and low battery consumption), (2) use of AA batteries (easily replaceable on the scene), and (3) outstanding macro-to-normal focusing capability. Note that this camera does not rise to the level of and is NOT a substitute for an evidence tech camera - it is a first responder camera that capably documents the scene and specifics to the scene.
