Out of all my Canon lenses this is my favorite

I purchased this when they were first released, so long ago I don't remember. This stayed on my 1DSIII 95% of the time and now stays on my 5DS R 98% of the time.
The best praise I can offer is - IT JUST WORKS! where ever needed.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Excellent lens

I have owned the lens for almost 3 years. I has performed admirably and has done everything that I have asked it to do. When used within its design range, you cannot have a better partner waiting on you to call it into action.
I have never been disappointed with it.
Some comment that it is heavy. It is only 8 oz. heavier that the 70-200 F2.8 and no one complains about that one.
I have carried it afield on numerous occasions and have not been made weary from the weight. Overall, an excellent addition to the photo equipment bag. I probably use it for 85% of my shooting.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images
Cons: no cons from me
I would recommend this to a friend!

I would be repeating what every one has been saying about this lens. believe it! this is the best lens I have, yes it's expensive, but well worth it....
I would recommend this to anyone, pro or not. Carry extra Batteries because this lens will drain them quick. Also carry a mono pod or tripod with you so you can save your arm for free hand shots.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images, the only lens you need
Cons: drains batery quickly, heavy very heavy

Excellent Lens for Garden Photography
on July 1, 2012

I've had the 28-300mm lens for a year and very pleased with its performance. Even though, the lens is a bit heavy, a bit pricy, and does not accept a tele-converter, it's really fantastic lens for garden photography. To be able to maintain 2.3 ft.close focusing throughout the entire zoom range, makes this lens ideal for macro/close-up photography. Also, this lens will focus even closer with a 25mm extension tube and 500D close-up filter—wow. Now, I hardly use a macro lens. For extreme close-ups, I mate this lens with an extension tube on a Canon 7D. To make make up for the lack of a tele-converter, I use this lens on a 7D with the APS sensor, and for landscapes and garden vista shots, a 5D MII is used. I shoot all of my images from a tripod, so weight is not an issue for me— a tremendous lens for my applications.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images, excellent for macro/close-ups
Cons: a bit pricy

Best Lens For shooting Video With 5D Mark II
on April 9, 2009

I recently purchased the 5D Mark II and this lens with the sole purpose of making video. This lens has surpassed everything I had hoped it could do and has produced the sharpest video footage ever. As another person reviewing this lens had pointed out, you do need to turn OFF the image stabilizer when shooting video to get sharper footage. This is true. The versatility of the lens allows one to be extremely creative and you don't need to change lenses to get the effects you need. This lens is the perfect lens for the 5D Mark II camera, and makes shooting video so easy. Very solidly built. Heavy, but I like that because I feel as if I'm getting my money's worth.
Even the still images were pin sharp. Finally I have a lens that produces the sharpest video and I sincerely believe that the 5D Mark II and the EF28-300mm f3.5-5,6L USM are a match made in heaven.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus, best lens for shooting video with the 5d mark ll
Cons: none

Great in bright light

Okay, in reference to the earlier review; I kept the lens and I have been using it due to it's incredibly flexible range. I shot offroad races last weekend and the lens was the no brainer to take. I could get people in the pits close by and when the cars were at a distance you get (300mm) shots that don't look like they are taken close by. They look great. The clarity is very good and again the lens worked great right up to sundown. As long as you know this the lens is a killer. After the light dims go to super fast lens ( I avoid flash if at all possible.) So do you get a 28-300? I would do it again and give it 5 stars now. PS Yes I give the tightening ring more attention than I admit and it is a pain at Petco Park moving around, but when the action is fast and you want the tall lens and then it must be shorter and then close up and then long again... well that is this lens! The reviews of the images have been great.

An elephant of a Lens
on June 11, 2015

The EF 28-300 f/3.5-5.6L is my walkabout lens on my 7DII. Although it is fairly large for a compact lens, I have no issues with its weight or size. It's not as sharp as my Canon prime lenses but its versatility far outweighs that issue. In low light conditions I use it with my 600EX-RT and couldn't be more pleased with the results. Fully understanding what this lens is and what it's capable of doing, my only issue with it is the zoom tension ring locking against the focus ring, and that's not that big a deal.
Anyone in the market for a general purpose, highly versatile zoom lens that delivers amazing results, for what it is, must seriously consider acquiring one of these gems. It may be nicknamed the white elephant, but that's a good thing...

Most versitile lens out there

This lens is amazing. I trekked all through Peru with this lend hanging around my neck. MAY SURE TO BRING BACKPACK. This lens is heavy, but that is due to the quality of construction. I scaled mountains and had this lens bang against rocks and it has never let me down. Have used for over 3 years regularly.
Pros: Superior build quality, full range
Cons: Semi-sharp images, heavy
