Get Your Bang for your Buck

This lens is the most versatile lens I've ever used. Most people don't realize how many opportunities of captured moments are missed in public with simultaneous activities all around you. I find myself shooting at 28mm and capturing another frame at 300mm within a second (and this happens more and more frequently). I am shooting everything in between that zoom range as well.
-
-If you are mindful of your aperture range from 3.5-5.6, it shouldn't be too much of a hassle. If it were at 2.8, I would never have to pull out my 70-200 lens. One can dream can't he?
-
-telescoping (push/pull to zoom) takes some getting used to if it's your first time. You'll grow to love it because of how fast it is. Make sure you don't keep it too tight otherwise movement can be too sticky.
-
-This thing is built like a tank. Get a comfortable shoulder strap for this guy, because it will give you a workout if you are holding the camera up for an hour straight. I prefer extra weight knowing it's made well as should you.
-
-The images are sharp throughout its entire focal range. I am very happy with it for L lens quality.
-
-I have only two negative comments, both of which have alternatives:
1) autofocus searches the entire focal range back and forth in low lighting. I recommend using single point focusing and find an edge of high contrast to focus on.
2) There is some very noticeable barrel distortion between 28-50mm. This can be corrected easily with most photo software though.
-
Whenever I know I am going to be in a situation that I can't change out my lenses easily or can't carry two cameras, this is the lens I choose. If you find yourself in unpredictable situations and high activity, there is no better lens for you than this one. Or if you are like me and just don't like to be limited by a set focal length sometimes, then this lens is for you.
-
Hats off to you Canon for making the most versatile lens in your line-up!
-
TIP:
buy your lens used from a reliable seller and save a ton of money.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images, versatile, most reliable work out partner, opens up new framing opportunities
Cons: barrel distortion at wider angles, autofocus wanders in some low lighting conditions

Highly recommend. I read every review and watched every video I could find on this lens. I feel the reviews are accurate. If you read and watch them you will know exactly what you are buying. The only down side of this lens that I feel is non debatable is its weight. Yes it is a bit heavy. It doesn’t bother me at 6' 180lbs but some might be put off a bit. That said I love every other feature and aspect of this lens and I feel the weight is simply a byproduct of a superb design and build. There is one thing the reviews do not mention and it is of foremost importance and must be considered in todays high tech world. Lenses are part of an imaging system. The system consists mainly of the camera, the lens and the software. Comparing this lens to other sharper lenses means nothing unless you plan to make huge prints. With todays sensors and software the final image product is rarely compromised by a quality lens that is only 99% of some other super sharp zoom. Consider the incredible range of FL and the choice for me was simple. As has been stated in many of the reviews, rent it first if you can to make sure you will be OK with the weight. You'll love the image quality.

Superb lens...

After researching this lens I decided to go ahead and purchase one. The biggest complaint I had read was about it's weight... It is a little hefty but not that bad (3.68 lbs add a mono or tripod if need be, but seriously it's not like you're lugging around a 600mm prime) and considering the versatility of this lens for the most part it's all the lens you'll need... Think about it, you won't be caring around multiple lenses and having to switch them out in the field. It's a perfect travel lens.
The second complaint was the Push Pull zoom. Personally I love it! It only took a few minutes to get the hang of it, and now I wish all my zoom lenses had it. AF function is super fast, and optical quality is outstanding.
The only con for me on this lens would be is its price... But then you get what you pay for.
Bottom line; This lens has quickly become my most favorite lens I own and has found its forever home on my 5D Mark IV.

Favorite lens

I am a photographer that travels a lot. I find this lens the very best for traveling. On my 5D Mark II I get 1:1 and on my 7D I can get range like 44-480mm. I present digital shows of my travels to many groups every year, and they always comment on the sharpness of my images. I never have to change lens which avoids dust on sensor, and I can zoom in or out at will. I have used this lens for more than 5 years, and could not be without it. 90% of my shooting is hand held and the IS is invaluable. Carrying photo gear on flights is a breeze. It weighs no more than my 100-400 IS lens that I use for wildlife.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images, range of focal lengths, a true one-in all lens

The everyday lens from heaven

I been using this lens like no other and has been permanent fixture for my nature photography adventures. Currently shoot with a 6D. Living in Oregon the elements are damp here but this lens is very well sealed off and resistant. The best part is the crisp, clean and professional look your images have. If you are a camper/hiker and want to take the best photos of adventures this is the lens for you. It definitely does the work of 3 lenses hence the weight. Yeah it might be on the heavy side but makes up in the image quality.

My GoTo Lens
on May 26, 2013

As the title suggests, this is my GoTo lens. I currently carry a 10-22mm W/A, 28-135mm standard, and 100mm macro along with this lens. 9-times out of 10, the 28 to 300mm is on my 7D camera body. The pictures are sharp. I was at Hearst Castle and in-doors where flash photography isn't allowed and blown away with the quality of the pictures I ended up with, even in the dark theater room. The focus is fast and true. The colors are brilliant. I have a picture of a friend where I'm 50ft away and I took a headshot of him. Once back at home, I cropped it down to just his eyes and you can clearly see the reflection of Yellowstone National Park in his sunglasses. I love this camera and lens. The only drawbacks I see are that Canon says you can't use the extenders on it (I'd love to use a 2x extender) and the lens weight can be a drag if you have the camera on your neck for several hours.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images
Cons: can't be used with 1:4 or 2:0 extender, weight

Most awesome lens in my bag!

I am a professional wedding photographer, and specialize in beach weddings. This is my go to lens for beach weddings - yes, it is a bit on the heavy side, but it's value is unmatched!! 10+ years and never worrying about changing lenses outside especially on the beach because of the dust factor, this lens handles all my needs. Although it is not so great for inside darkly lit ceremonies.
