I bought the Canon mx860 after buying a higher rated HP machine. Unlike the HP, the Canon software installed under Vista without a problem. However, setting up this machine is not for the faint of heart. There is more red tape than a county bureaucracy. The instructions for installing the print head are full of warnings but short on help. The illustrations for the print head are vague and it's hard to tell how the it goes in. The ink cartridges are easy, however, and there's a helpful light to tell you when they're seated properly. Very nice. The manual guides you through all the variations (USB, wireless, LAN) which is very nice but it takes a little effort to find the right sequence and follow it. I've done one scan and it worked great. The organization software for the scan is confusing but it will scan to a pdf file which was essential for me. I'm glad I bought this machine so far. The display is very readable but you have to decide between performing a function from the buttons or the software. I like the big, clearly labeled buttons, too. The paper tray is almost hidden, and you have to take it out to load it which is not a plus because this usually leads to breakage.
Pros: Easy Setup, easy to use, readable screen
Cons: Difficult Setup

Love Printer

I love my MX860 Printer. I found it easy to install. Just followed instruction sheet. Didn't take me half the time others commented it took them and I'm 75. The photos are beautiful and sharp. Haven't tried printing on fabric yet. Found I can adjust the print for recipes etc and save on ink. Printer seems large but is very modern looking and isn't as tall as old all-in-one printer. It does seem slower on printing but might be my computer. I sent recipes to friends and found easy to scan and email. I would purchase again and recommend to friends.

Canon MX860

I've come to expect a lot from my printers. Usually, high quality and low price top the list. This printer, although not the cheapest, certainly met my quality criteria.
The setup was straightforward; following the other Canon printer I owned. After the initial software setup (that went smoothly) all of the functions "just worked."
I'm particularly pleased with the single and double sided scanning. It works smoothly and easily. Beats the flatbed scanner I had to take out of it's "hiding place," warm up, and use.
The fax works with my ooma VOIP system both send and receive.
Other than it's slightly large footprint, I really like this printer.
Pros: Easy Setup, easy to use, reliable, scanning is great!
Cons: Large Footprint, Heavy/Bulky

Canon equals excellence

So this is my third Canon printer and my second all in one. I must say they just keep getting better and better. I finally just had to retire my old multipass F30 after almost 9 years of service so I had to get a new printer. I saw the PIXMA MX860 features and it was everything I wanted in a printer and more. Setup is easy as pie and the software made photo printing a breeze. I do not think I could ever own a printer without the seperate ink tanks(one of my main features that I look for in a printer). The print quality went above and beyond my expectations on both text printing and photo printing. Once again Canon hits a grand slam on this one.
Pros: durable, Easy Setup, easy to use, Low Ink Consumption, reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors, its a canon

Replacing a Canon Multi-function

I had a Canon Multipass F50 (inkjet) that I bought 10 years ago. It had light to medium use, but its dependability is why I bought another Canon. The PIXMA MX860 is performing very well, but appears to use more ink than the previous machine. My only real complaint was with set up. Email support steered me in the wrong direction, but phone support was very good. However, the set up routine phone support led me through was not detailed in the written intructions. Since I print from two differnt computers, I needed wireless printing. Phone support said that I could hook up one machine, a desktop with USB and then connect wirelessly with my laptop. The instructions they provided didn't work. However, phone support said it wasn't possible have both USB and wireless connectivity at the same time. The support tech had me hook the printer up to my wireless router with a ethernet cable and then set each computer up to communicate wirelessly. It works very well.
Pros: reliable, Compact Design, Sharp Tones & Colors, easy to use
Cons: Difficult Setup, High Ink Consumption

MX 860 and operation

At first this may seem like I'm knocking the machine. Actually I like it very much. The problem was the set up. I bought the MX860 on the applle store recommendation. It took me 14 hours to set up because the disk and install instructions that came with the printer were not compatible with Apple snow leopard. There was a warning to go to the site, but I found the site confusing. After getting with a real person at Apple and Canon the set up went smoothly. No way would I have been able to set it up from just the web site tech support pages. Suggestion to Canon, make sure your printers leave the factory with easy and precise instructions that are accurate.
Pros: fast print speed
Cons: Difficult Setup

Beats all other competitor's printers

This is an excellent quality for an all-in-one printer. I've used other printers for years, and they never lasted very long. This is one solid printer.
Love everything but the ink cartridges. They are half the size of most other Canon printer cartridges, thus requiring more frequent replacement. And the price is more than half of the larger cartridges. In addition, finding an outlet that sells these small cartridges is difficult.
Needed help setting up the wireless under Vista, but savvy Canon tech had me up and running after some brief instruction that isn't in the manual.
Pros: reliable, Compact Design, durable, Sharp Tones & Colors, easy to use
Cons: High Ink Consumption
