Canon MX 860 All-in-one

Purchased this product primarily to replace a dead scanner and to upgrade a printer. Have had it for about 6 months...so far, so good.
The scanner works very well and is much easier to use and produces much truer scans that my old dedicated flat bed. The document printing is excellent as is the photo printing. I have yet to use the fax and I am told it may not work well with Time Warner VOIP phone lines.
It does have a rather large footprint, but that was not a problem since I got rid of a flatbed and a large printer that occupied more space.
I have not used the wireless feature and have it currently connected via USB. Set-up was a breeze.
The ink tanks are rather small and do not last as long as I would like. Of course, what printer does not suck up ink? When print in B & W it seems to use some blue and yellow ink as well. Not sure why. The black tank is larger and lasts a bit longer and is not super expensive, but the small color tanks seem to run out fast and are not cheap. Also have found the ink is not available everywhere. Would have given 5 stars except for the ink consumption.
Overall, however, a nice machine.
Pros: durable, Easy Setup, easy to use, reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors
Cons: Large Footprint, High Ink Consumption, slow from power on to ready to print
I would recommend this to a friend!

Disappointed

This is a replacement for a Cannon MX850, and doesn't come close to the quality and performance. It is hard to change the settings for optimum performance. I am very disappointed.
Pros: Lightweight/Portable
Cons: Difficult to use, Difficult Setup, High Ink Consumption, Flimsy Construction
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Here are some things I really like about this product:
* Two paper trays; rear tray is convenient for photo paper, envelopes, etc.
* Network capable; I have both a Windows PC and a Mac sharing it via a wired network.
* Fully automatic duplexing, which allows me to save on paper.
* Five ink tanks to minimize on ink costs.
* Document feeder for multi-page copying and scanning (I'm not presently using the fax capability).
Pros: Easy Setup, easy to use, fast print speed, Low Ink Consumption, reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors
Cons: Large Footprint

It works for me!

I had separate pieces of equipment and decided to purchase an "all in one" for my use at home for mostly family projects, and decided on the Canon PIXMA 860. So far it has been great for all of my needs. Scanning pictures for a family reunion presentation has been a breeze. It's a little slow printing but, I love it!
Pros: Easy Setup, easy to use, Sharp Tones & Colors

Paper Tray Selection Blues
on June 4, 2009

My previous Canon printer has a button to select which paper tray you wanted to use: this one does not. You have to select one for the default, which is 8-1/2 x 11 plain paper and the other tray only works with another size paper. I am trying to work around this by setting up additional presets, but haven't figured out how to do it. I want the same size and type of paper in both trays. Other than that, I am very happy with it. Maybe Canon can do a software upgrade and select the tray that way.
Pros: Compact Design, Easy Setup, easy to use, fast print speed
Cons: Heavy/Bulky, no select button to switch between paper trays
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great Printer for a Ink Jet
on December 11, 2009

This is my first Canon printer and I am quite impressed with the ink quality. It's definitely a step up from the standard inkjet look and it dries pretty quick. While it takes the printer some time to warm up for an initial print job, once it warms up its fine. So far I can't complain about the ink life for the price, it's been about every 10-12 weeks or so, depending on my print habits at that time. I like the duplex printing, it's very convenient. I saw someone post that the printer doesn't function when one print cartridge is missing. I thought that also, so what I did was left the empty cartridge in the printer and when the display or the dialog box informed me that the ink is empty, I simply click okay and keep on moving. No harm, no foul. To me this printer is a good hybrid between your usual multifunction inket and laser. It's not as pricey as a color laser all-in-one, but gives you a comparable quality in print documents.
Pros: reliable, Easy Setup, durable, Sharp Tones & Colors, easy to use
Cons: Large Footprint

All In One Replacement/Upgrade
on December 17, 2009

Purchased as a replacement for the second "X" brand all in one I've been using for many years in my home office. I need all the features in this machine for my business and will be happy to have use of all now, since my "X" brand product never upgraded the software drivers for that machine's scanner and card reader.
One of the key reasons I purchased "THIS" machine was because the Tech Support is On SHore and all the GREAT reviews I read related to it. And "It's True!"
I had some difficulty setting up this machine, partly my fault and partly following the installation instructions was confusing to me. I had planned to use this as a "wired" to a desktop (since they sit on the same desk) and wireless to a laptop. After multiple attempts and finally calling "Tech Support" I was walked through the "All Wireless" installation and everything is fine. I made this harder than it needed to be, but the instructions didn't help me "understand" how/why to do it. Also I didn't find a clear description of how to link additional lan computers with all in one. Once described by the tech support person, "Charles" thank you very much, it was simple, easy and painless. Again, I probably made it more difficult than necessary.
My only concern at this point is ink use. I won't know how that compares to the "X" brand machine which used huge XL88 cartridges, But I bought this machine for only a little more than what I paid for a complete set of cartridges for the "X" machine. Other than that, it's functioned well to date.
Pros: Compact Design, Sharp Tones & Colors, easy to use, onshore user friendly tech support! ++
Cons: Difficult Setup

Another great Canon printer

This is my third Canon printer (i450, MP530, MX860), going back about 6 years. All 3 are in use in various parts of the house, and all are functioning perfectly. The MX860 starts up and shuts down faster than previous models, is quieter, and the LCD menu system is much easier to navigate and change settings. The features - LAN, Wi-Fi, auto duplexing, etc. - are exceptional for the price, and the printed guides are very complete and easy to follow. I have also owned a Canon flatbed scanner and a digital point-and-shoot camera. None of my Canon products has EVER failed in any way! On top of that, I just read a computer magazine article that listed Canon printers as the most reliable and Canon tech support as well above average in a survey of over 45,000 users. The MX860 is just another in a long line of quality products.
Pros: reliable, Easy Setup, Sharp Tones & Colors, easy to use, relatively low ink costs
Cons: Slow Print Speed, Large Footprint
I would recommend this to a friend!
