This is my first Canon printer. I have had HP Officejets and Brothers in the past. What a joy to work with. The software is so much better! I am using the printer wirelessly on a home network. Follow the simple directions and you will have no problems.
Pros: Compact Design, Easy Setup, easy to use

Best Printer I Have Ever Owned

I was in the market for a new printer after a major brand printer costing much more money died after 8 months of use...I researched and found the Canon MX860 to be to my liking. I bought it 3 days ago and it is a great choice. Printing speed is somwhat slower than I wanted but I am still very happy as the features and quality more thanmake up for this slight inconvenience. Printer is super quiet!! Everything works as advertised. A #1 printer has evolved and Canon has a new loyal customer.

Need More Options

I'm really very satisfied overall with this printer. The one drawback is limited options for paper type. Borderless printing is only allowed for photo paper. I make cards and would like borderless printing to be available for cardstock also. Also, it would be helpful to have labels as a media choice. Otherwise, I'm very happy with this printer. Don't use the fax. Scanner works well, but I use Paperport instead of the Canon software.
Pros: easy to use, Sharp Tones & Colors
Cons: Heavy/Bulky

I'd give the MX860 a "10", if I could!

After setting up and using for only two weeks, I am blown away by this all-in-one's high quality and its value for the dollar! I have yet to discover a flaw--outside of the printed manual which accompanied it. Yet, the online Canon Solution Menu more than makes up for the printed manual's obtuseness.
I have no problem with the size and weight of the product; it perches nicely on top of my printer table. The UBS cable could be a little longer, but I've made it "work". The set-up itself was easy, especially compared to the regimen demanded for setting up other manufacturers' printers that I've owned. And every day I find some new feature which further tweaks my "happy button".
While I'm not currently using the FAX and Wireless functions, I plan hooking those up in the near future. I've tested the Scan and the Copying functions, of course, and am pleased with both. But to date, THE most impressive function I've used is Photo Printing. It is just spectacular, with intense, bright colors, sharp detail, etc.! Since I am already a highly satisfied and loyal Canon camera user, I can now look forward to generating many quality printed photos via my MX860.

Surprised at Quality of Scan and Print Qualities

Scanning/printing capabilities are beyond what I expected. For instance, you can scan an art piece you've created (even if the piece has non-paper materials on it), and it integrates all beautifully. Additionally, I have not experienced any difficulties reported on Canon's multi-function products, but I bought this after any difficulties were reported; however, I'm confident previous users will get the satisfaction they need if they stay in touch with Canon directly. Now, I'm an amateur as far as using this product to aid in fixing pictures, but, alternatively, it has been flexible so far with allowing me to export my images to other compatible photoshop-type software. One last note, this particular series was recommended to me by a successful, professional photographer.
Pros: Compact Design, durable, easy to use, fast print speed, Low Ink Consumption, reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors, diversity of options, scanning capabilities, access to accessories, setup easy if you pay careful attention, price is a steal
Cons: Difficult Setup

Provides very good color prints, copies and scans. The ink is now a little more expensive because of the chip, but the quality is worth it. Have always liked canons as they sell single colors as opposed to tricolors.
Pros: durable, Easy Setup, easy to use, fast print speed, Low Ink Consumption, reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors
Cons: Large Footprint, Heavy/Bulky

It's an awesome machine

We have had our MX860 but only about 3 weeks. I spent a lot of time researching what was out there and most brands didn't receive the high marks of the 860 and frankly appeared to be poorly constructed. While it may be a bit of a beast at 20+ lbs...it is solid. The setup was a breeze...we went wireless as I wanted to print from both our desktop and laptop. We have done a couple scsns...copies and prints and sent a couple of faxes to make sure the fax didn't present any problems. We won't fax much so it is not hooked in.
Yet too early to tell how it will perform big jobs or how much ink will be used. Didn't really buy it for color but we wanted to rest assured that it will work when the demand for color arises. Do we like it...yes. Would we recommend it....yes. We have seen and used a lot of printers of the years and the MX860 is an impressive machine for the money.
Cons: not that big of con...but it does require space.

Limited wireless capabilities

I’ve had the printer for six weeks with not much use. Many reviewers have already posted positive detailed opinions on this device and I will comment on a couple of issues that I had. First, setup, connectivity and compatibility with different OS.
Initially the printer was installed with a Dell XPS running XP. Regardless of the detailed instructions, was not an easy task because the system has to create a specific port for the Canon (not a COM or LPT) and to make things worse (in my case), I did not disconnected my flatbed Canon LIDE scanner which uses a newer version of the Navigator.
Thus, every time I tried to launch the PIXMA, the old scanner interfered. The solution, disconnect all other Canon devices including a camera since these also use the Canon Navigator before installing your printer for the first time. I never had VISTA but according to reviewers, should be easier. And reviewers have commented that works well with Macs. When I installed Windows 7, the OS did recognize the PIXMA and self installation was flawless and the OS itself downloaded the corresponding updated driver.
In order to use the device in the wireless mode or trough a network, needs to be first configured trough USB with the computer. Even with Windows 7, the printer was not recognized as a wireless device.
Second, a limitation that Canon does not publish. The scanning feature does not work on a network or wireless mode. In order to scan even a single page, the printer has to be connected to the computer by the USB cable or you have to use a USB storage media. This brings me to the third issue. The front slot for the USB port is less than one inch wide so many common USB keys do not fit into that slot (the ones that are carried on your key chain). Unless connected to the computer, in order to scan any document, photo, etc, I had to use a Micro SD Card in a micro adapter. Quite inconvenient for such a complex device.
Otherwise, the printer is very good, especially the double side printing feature. BTW, the device is big and heavy; over 30 pounds. But overall, seems that Canon has been able to offer us a great printer at a reasonable price.
Pros: easy to use, reliable
Cons: Heavy/Bulky, Difficult Setup
