The features are nice but the printer is very slow. It has a long warm up before each print job. It also sucks down the ink cartridges way too fast (and they are not cheap).

I have been looking for a wireless printer for awhile now and ran across the MX860 one evening, what a nice feature the wireless works awsome no need to run back and forth between kitchen table and printer. Just make sure when looking for the ink cartridges you right down the numbers on them and don't go looking just for the printer name on the ink boxes as I found out this one was not listed on any of them as of April 2009. Looked at about 6 stores before calling home and getting the actual ink number.
Pros: durable, Easy Setup, easy to use, fast print speed, reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors
Cons: Heavy/Bulky
I would recommend this to a friend!

A quality printer, big bang for the buck

Overall I'm very happy with this printer; its fast, quiet, good quality prints, Separate ink cartridges for each color including 2 black cartridges, some nice software features included. It does have some short comings however. 1st, product description doesn't inform buyer that it requires an access point to connect. It would be a better product if it could be configured as a slave wireless. I had to install a router just to use this printer. Even then it was a pain and a time consuming process to configure. Wouldn’t even print directly connected through the USB cable. 2nd, the paper tray is too small and doesn't accommodate legal size paper, Also not disclosed in product description. You have to use the manual bypass which is OK I guess if you don't print legal size often. 3rd, it doesn't have enough variety of memory card slots. 4th, printed ink smears if using a highlighter. Otherwise, it’s a great printer. I like it a lot. I use it mostly as a college student: research papers, class projects, student collaborations, etc. I also like to hike and camp and like to take photos outdoors. As overall printer for a student or home office, it’s a great deal and serves me great. As a printer for photos, scrapbooking, arts and crafts and that sort of thing, it’s ok. I would probably shop around more though. As a dedicated office printer with several users, I wouldn’t want it. I don’t think it would hold up. But for its price, it makes a great all around printer for a home office with just one or two users.
Pros: easy to use, fast print speed, Low Ink Consumption, reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors, duplex printing, wireless - out of sight, scanner works great, nice software package, tech support was quick to respond
Cons: Difficult Setup, small paper tray, missing memory slots, requires access point, printed ink smears

Great all-around home/office printer

This printer was easy to connect to a Windows XP system. Installed the software via the CD, but checked Canon's website out of habit to make sure that I was using up-to-date drivers, etc.
The printer is very quite. I immediately started testing the features: regular document printout is crisp; photos came out right-on with how they looked on my screen - even on non-Canon photo paper.
A side note on printing: The specs don't mention printing out on 110 lb (card stock) paper, but I decided to give it a try - worked without a hitch; nice to know for those who like creating their own greeting cards.
Copier: You can either copy in standard or special copies (2-sided; 2 on 1; 4 on 1;borderless; image repeat, collated; fade restore; frame erase; sticker; binding margin; punch hole removal).
FAX: Received and transmitted without a hitch; am able to store up to 5 speed dials.
Scanner: allows you to save the document to your computer; a flash drive or a memory card. OCR software is built in - no need for a separate program!
Memory Card: allows you to print photos directly from a memory card.
The printer has a few built-in templates: Notebook paper, graph paper, checklist and staff paper. Not sure if and when I'll ever use it, but it's nice to know where I can get some graph paper in a hurry :)
Overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase and look forward to many years of use. Good job Canon.

I have used the printer for more than a month. Printer is good and supposed to save ink. I have not used the fax. The main reason for buying this printer is it offers a auto document feeder for the scanner and I was interested in converting the documents and monthly bills into digital. It is generally a good printer and mostly serves the purpose. It has several great features; ADF, duplex printing and scanning. But the adf has some shortfalls.
When i use the scanner, sometimes it jams (mostly for thicker paper). This is acceptable but the trouble is when it jams, it expects to rescan all the pages. This is very time consuming. I wish it has an option to save the pages that are scanned and start from the jammed part. Scanner software is very good. It coverts to pdf and can also secure it.
Good thing is that the scanner supports duplex scanning. It can also scan small pages (smaller than a4) from ADF. However it does not support duplex scanning for small or other odd size pages. It does not support pages longer than a4. For pages longer than a4, only 11.5 inches show up. I had planned to scan my bills (most credit card bills are longer than a4). So it is not useful for long papers.
Pros: reliable, Easy Setup, easy to use, auto document feeder, extensive set of features, double sided printing, double sided scanning
Cons: scanner software

Good features, until the ink goes

I do really like this multifunction center - and using it wirelessly was a breeze when we first bought it. We prefer to use it with a cable these days (we switched networks and haven't gone through the setup process again), however there is one major downfall which is killing our experience with this device now. We have run out of the large black cartridge. So, we can't print. At all. Even with the small black cartridge fine, the printer won't print. I can forgive this, as the quality of output is something Canon sells itself on. Here's the kicker though - I can't scan, or fax! I am out of ink, and I can't scan. Let me say that again - I can't scan, because I am out of ink. How on earth is this logical? We would like to scan, but don't need to print anything for a while.. so why can't I scan? Looking carefully at other models when we replace this.
Pros: wireless - awesome, little screen - like a business photocopier, scan to computer file great
Cons: can't scan without ink?, can't fax without ink?, can't scan if ink runs out

I wouldn't look any further for a multi-function printer. This baby does it all and it is very easy to use. I am redoing WWII images with the scanner and printing directly onto 4X6 paper. The printer gives you some photo editing capabilities, but best of all it will resize the image automatically simply by selecting the paper source. I'm glad I bought it after looking at way too many printers the choice was obvious, start here with this product, save yourself the hassle like I experienced and have some fun.

2 Thumbs Up!

I've had one of these for 7 months, it has performed flawlessly (Networked to 7 computers in our household). It is a little slower than other printers I've had, BUT, it's output is excellent. Glossy photos are so shiny they look wet! I actually purchased a MX7600 last week (gave the 860 to my sister) thinking it would be like a faster version of this model, WRONG! It was faster and had the same solid drivers but the plain paper output with the clear coat actually felt damp and Photos had a dull haze on glossy paper. I returned the MX7600 and repurchased another MX860 because it's just that good. It's very quiet as well, very good mechanical design on the feed mechanisms both paper and document feeder.
This truely is the best multifunction printer I've owned (I've had over 10). It could be faster, it could use larger capacity ink cartridges, but you will be very happy with this printer.
