Having used and installed printers for the past 25 years, the installation of this product was so unexpectedly well organized and easy to perform I was almost dumbfounded when it ended. Especially for a wireless unit. The prompts were not only clear and easy to follow, but the install actually setup the wireless function just about by itself. All it needed was to name its driver.
This could definitely be considered Printer Installation for Dummies.
This is my second CANON multifunction printer so I expect it will perform excellently. We just retired our Multipass F50 - by choice. We could have replaced the printer head, but went for a new one instead. We had it for 7 years and used it for business work at home and class work for two elementary and high school students. It took a lot of abuse and just kept on "ticking."
CANON makes great printers.
Pros: Compact Design, Lightweight/Portable, durable, Easy Setup, easy to use, fast print speed, Sharp Tones & Colors, great value, coompetitively priced

Won't print when 1 cartridge empty

Great equipment except for this new feature. I've had other great Canon's. They would print when a cartridge was empty, using other colors to make the one I wanted to print. Needless to say, but I do say, this is not a good feature. The older printers were multifunctional and lasted many years with voluminous printings by the organization for which I was a volunteer. This one lacks the versatility those had. Now, I replaced the one that was empty, the larger black, and 2 cartridges that I have not been using, since I was printing lots of black and no color, are showing empty: cyan and magenta. So, now I cannot print til I go get more cyan and magenta cartridges. I'm not pleased with this "new" technology. So, when I tell others about this multifunction printer. I'll tell them about the great features plus this feature that does what it does and let them make their own decision, without any input except the fact of how it works. It does very well while there is ink. Thanks for an otherwise great product.
Pros: Easy Setup, easy to use, fast print speed, Sharp Tones & Colors
Cons: Large Footprint, Heavy/Bulky, High Ink Consumption

Follow the Instructions

First off, I can bet 95% of the people who had installation problems failed to read and/or follow the setup instructions (in the business, we call those ID-10T errors). Take your time, and read carefully. The worst part was removing the safety tabs from the ink cartridges (I flung the first one across the room by accident!). Even if you're doing a wireless (I advise against this for any network printer) or network cable (this is by far the best method) hookup, unless you are a true Guru like me, you still need to do the USB connection setup step with one of your computers. Beyond that, I'm betting others don't have a clue about setting-up their home routers or have firewalls running on their local machines that are way too restrictive. I found the printer very easy to setup. I did a wired (cat5) connection to a 10/100/1000 switch in my home office, and time from sending the print job to the print job starting is typically slow on the first page (printer needs to warm-up), but then decent after that. On the other hand, accessing your SD (or other memory) card remotely from your computer is ridiculously (really, unacceptably) slow, but the built-in slot and software on the printer itself allow you to quickly resize, crop, and make other alterations to your pictures right there at the printer that you'd normally do on your workstation. If you want to move those files to your desktop, don't even bother trying across the network. If you want to do that, take the SD card out of the printer and plug it into your computer's card-reader. This isn't the fastest printer in the world, but B/W text printing is fairly quick, and full color photos print in reasonable time, and the print quality really is excellent. It's smaller, faster, and much quieter than the HP R40 I bought it to replace. It shakes a little, but not nearly as much as the HP or other inkjets I've worked with. Besides the SD card network access speed, my only other beefs at this point are that some of the plastic panels seem a bit flimsy, there were around 20 pieces of tape to remove when I unpacked it (probably shouldn't complain, as it was intact, right?), and loading the plain paper tray (and esp. getting it back in) can be a bit of a pain. While others have complained of high ink consumption, I've printed quite a number of text docs and 4x6 photos, and I haven't noticed any more ink use than in other inkjet printers. I am concerned, though, about the expensive replacements cartridges and the fact that they're chipped to make you replace them when their ink "expires". There are 3rd party replacement cartridges available at a fraction of the price, but I've read some horror stories, and I'm not sure, but using them could invalidate your warranty.
Pros: Compact Design, Easy Setup, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use
Cons: Flimsy Construction, slow sd card access over network

Best All-in-One Printer

First I was impressed with the packaging. Canon did a great job insuring the printer would arrive unscathed. The step by step guide was easy to follow with plenty of warnings about actions to avoid as well as the correct steps to take. The software installed flawlessly on my Vista 64 PC and performed as advertised. I have tested everything except FAX. That was a feature, while nice to have, was not a must-have for me. The photographs printed crisp and true to color on three different brands of paper (all glossy). Duplex printing is a real boon and again, worked great. The printer is attached via a Cat-5 cable to my router while the printers are all wireless. Scans initiated both from the printer and each PC were easy to do and yielded good results. While I can't speak for durability, if it holds up as well as my Canon camera and lenses, I will be a happy person.
Pros: Easy Setup, easy to use, fast print speed, reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors

Fantastic Printer

Bought the Pixma MX860 on sale. The printer has been in use for about 2 months, and no problems to report so far. The instructions contain lots of pictures and that makes setup a breeze. The on-line documentation for learning how to use the printer is also easy to follow. While the MX860 has a larger footprint and is heavier than some All-in-One printers, the printer is solid and not flimsy like comparable printers from other companies. The MX860 is also quiet when printing. The paper stays clean and free from dust because the paper tray is not sticking out all the time. Print quality is sharp, crisp, and professional. The Pixma MX860 is easy to use whether scanning, copying, printing, or faxing. The ink is less costly when purchased in a combo pack. This is my first purchase of a Canon printer. It replaces an All-in-One printer from another large competitor that was sent to the recycle heap prematurely. The Canon Pixma MX860 was chosen after doing lots of research and comparing it against the competition. This is an excellent printer.
Pros: reliable, Easy Setup, durable, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use, excellent documentation
Cons: Heavy/Bulky

Great Experence

The Canon MX850 office multi function printer is outstanding in all way. Only neg is that it drinks ink. Yet the ink replacements are resonable. I had a color lasar printer and well this inkjet is so much better and less expensive to operate. The functions are easy to use and it even comes with a hard copy manual on its operation and many features. Well done Canon.

Previously I had a PIXMA MP780, which was excellent I made the mistake of buying non-Canon cartridges that eventually screwed up my machine. I decided to buy the PIXMA MX 860, which appears to be an excellent machine; I've had it only two days. The directions for setting up the printer were generally clear, but note the following: 1) Why is the serial number such a big secret? I finally found it--with a flashlight! 2) It took me a while to discover the rear paper feed. Your manual should state that there are two feeds and should describe how to choose one or the other. (The PIXMA MP780 was much simpler regarding feed switch.) Other than that, the printer is more compact than the MP 780 and my hunch is I will eventually find it an improvement. I'll let you know later on.
